Chapter 81
Ariana didn’t move.
After the voice faded, the space around her fell into silence again, but it didn’t feel empty this time. The pressure in her chest eased just enough for her to breathe, yet something remained beneath it, steady and watchful, like it hadn’t finished with her. She kept her eyes open, forcing herself to stay grounded even as her breathing struggled to settle.
That wasn’t Kael.
The thought came clearer now, but instead of relief, it made something inside her tighten further. If that wasn’t him, then whatever had answered her was something else entirely, something that had already learned how to sound close enough to be mistaken. That was what unsettled her the most, how close it had felt to being real.
Ariana lowered her hand slowly from her chest, steadying herself before she spoke. "Then where are you?" she asked, her voice quiet but firm enough to carry. The words faded into the space without an answer, and this time she didn’t expect one.
Whatever had responded before didn’t answer like a person. It chose when to react, and that lack of control made her more cautious than afraid.
Instead of calling out again, she focused on the space around her. The ground beneath her feet remained smooth and faintly luminous, like something alive beneath the surface, and the air held that same quiet weight that didn’t belong to any place she knew. But the longer she stood there, the more something felt wrong.
It wasn’t a sound or movement.
It was the feeling of being noticed.
Her shoulders stiffened without her meaning them to, and her breathing slowed instinctively as her awareness narrowed. It felt like the moment before something struck, except this time there was nothing in front of her, nothing she could see or measure. That uncertainty made it worse, because whatever was here wasn’t hiding.
It was letting her feel it.
Ariana remained still, letting the sensation settle instead of reacting too quickly. It wasn’t like the presence she had felt before, the one that had pressed into her from every direction and made it hard to breathe. This one was different, controlled and precise, focused entirely on her as if everything else had been pushed aside. She turned slowly.
At first, there was nothing but the same endless stretch of dim space, faint light drifting at the edges like something out of place. Then the air shifted, not by breaking or rippling, but by tightening in a way that didn’t belong to anything natural. From that subtle distortion, a shape began to form, not appearing suddenly but revealing itself gradually, like it had been there all along.
Ariana narrowed her eyes as she focused on it. "What are you?" she asked, her voice steadier now despite the tension rising under her skin. She didn’t take a step forward, but she didn’t step back either.
This time, something answered.
The voice didn’t come from inside her.
It came from in front of her, calm and steady, as if it had been waiting.
"That depends on what you think you’re looking at."
Ariana didn’t relax, and the words only made her guard rise higher. She studied the figure carefully, the way it held its shape and the way the space around it didn’t resist its presence. It didn’t feel unstable or incomplete.
It felt like it belonged.
"You’re not like the other one," she said.
The figure tilted its head slightly, as if considering her words. "No," it replied. "I’m not."
Ariana shifted her weight, grounding herself more firmly. "Then what are you doing here?" she asked, her voice tightening just enough to show she wasn’t going to let it deflect again.
The figure didn’t answer immediately and simply watched her, its attention steady in a way that felt less like curiosity and more like judgment. After a moment, it spoke.
"I’m observing."
"That’s not an answer."
"It’s the only one you’re ready for."
Ariana exhaled slowly, tension building under her skin as irritation mixed with something colder. "I’m not in the mood for that," she said, her voice quieter but sharper now.
Something in the figure’s expression shifted slightly, not quite a smile but enough to suggest it understood her reaction. "That makes two of us."
That caught her off guard more than she expected.
Not because of the words, but because of how normal it sounded. There was nothing distant or distorted in its tone, nothing that marked it as something ancient or unnatural. It sounded almost human, and that made something in her chest tighten again.
Ariana looked at it more carefully this time. "What are you?" she asked again, more directly.
The answer came without hesitation.
"Fae."
The word settled between them, heavier than it should have been. Ariana had heard it before in stories that were never meant to be real, but nothing about this moment felt like a story anymore. The space itself seemed to respond to the word, subtle but undeniable.
"A Fae," she repeated, her voice lower now. "That still doesn’t explain why you’re here."
"No," it said calmly. "It doesn’t."
"Then explain it."
The Fae stepped closer, its movement smooth in a way that didn’t disturb anything around it. The space seemed to shift instead, adjusting to its presence rather than resisting it, and that alone made something in Ariana’s chest tighten again.
"You called something that shouldn’t answer," it said.
Ariana’s chest tightened immediately. "I called him."
The Fae shook its head slightly. "No. You reached past him."
That made her go completely still. The words didn’t just sound wrong. They felt wrong in a way she couldn’t ignore, like something inside her already knew it was true.
"What does that mean?" she asked, her voice quieter now.
The Fae studied her again, as if deciding how much to reveal. "It means what answered you is not what you think it is."
"I already know that."
"Do you?"
Her jaw tightened. "I know it wasn’t him."
The Fae didn’t look away. "That’s only part of the problem."
Ariana felt that settle heavier than she expected. "Then say it clearly," she said, her voice firm again.
The Fae didn’t hesitate. "What you touched is learning how to answer you."
Ariana’s breath caught, sharper this time. "That doesn’t make sense," she said, but the words didn’t sound as certain as she wanted them to.
"It will."
"No," she said, more firmly now. "You’re going to explain it."
The Fae held her gaze without reacting. "If you keep reaching for him the way you are now, you won’t find him."
Ariana’s expression hardened. "Then what will I find?"
The Fae didn’t soften its answer.
"Something that is already learning how to replace him."
The words hit harder this time.
Ariana felt it immediately, not just as an idea but as something that matched what she had already experienced. Her mind tried to reject it, but her body didn’t.
"Replace him?" she repeated.
"It’s already learning you," the Fae said. "The way you speak. The way you reach. The way you react."
Ariana took a step back before she could stop herself. "That’s not possible," she said, her voice tighter now.
"You already proved that it is."
Her chest tightened sharply, because she knew exactly what it meant. She had felt it. She had heard it. And for a moment, she had almost believed it was him.
Ariana shook her head slowly, trying to steady herself. "I would know the difference."
The Fae’s expression didn’t change.
"Would you?"
That question landed deeper than anything else. Because she wasn’t sure anymore.
Ariana forced herself to breathe, pushing the fear down. "Then I’ll stop it," she said, her voice steadier now.
The Fae didn’t move.
"Before it gets any closer."
For the first time, something in its expression shifted, not dismissive but interested.
"That would require you to understand it," it said.
"I don’t need to understand it," Ariana replied. "I just need to not let it in."
The Fae studied her for a moment longer, its gaze steady. "You’re already too late for that."
Ariana’s breath caught.
"What?"
She didn’t finish.
Because the presence came back.
It didn’t return the way it had before, slow and distant. It surged into her awareness all at once, stronger and closer, locking onto her with a precision that made it impossible to ignore. The pressure in her chest tightened sharply, forcing the air out of her lungs as her body reacted before she could stop it.
This time, it wasn’t distant.
It was right there. And then, it spoke.
"Ariana."
