Kael Vaughn had not stopped running for hours. The mountains stretched endlessly around him, steep and unforgiving, with snow cutting across sharp rock. The cold wind hit hard against his body, but he barely felt it. His lungs burned and his muscles strained, yet none of it mattered. The only thing that held his focus was the pull in his chest. It had not weakened once. If anything, it had grown stronger with every step, tightening like something inside him refused to slow down. Ariana was out there, and every second that passed without reaching her felt wrong in a way he could not ignore.

The bond had changed after she disappeared. Before, it had been faint, something he could push aside when he needed to think clearly. Now it was constant. It pressed against him without pause, sharp and demanding, guiding him forward with a certainty that left no room for doubt. He did not question it. He did not hesitate. She was alive. He could feel it, and that was enough to keep him moving even when his body wanted to stop.

Behind him, footsteps followed across the uneven terrain. Ryder caught up first, shifting back into human form as he reached him. His breathing was heavier, but controlled. "You’ve been running nonstop," Ryder said. "Where exactly are we going?" Kael did not answer immediately. He slowed just enough to shift, bones cracking as he returned to human form, but his eyes never left the mountain ahead. The pull had sharpened. It was no longer distant. It was close.

"She’s here," he said.

Ryder followed his gaze, but all he saw was stone, snow, and drifting mist. "Kael..." he started, uncertain. Kael stepped closer to the cliff without looking at him. "I can feel her," he said, his voice steady in a way that left no room for argument. The bond tightened again, stronger than before, pressing sharply against his chest as if reacting to the distance closing between them. It was no longer guiding him. It was pulling him.

Ryder frowned as he moved closer. "You think they’re hiding inside a mountain?" Kael shook his head slightly. "No. They’re hiding behind it." He placed his hand against the stone. At first, nothing changed. The surface felt cold and solid beneath his palm. Then something shifted. The texture was wrong. Not natural. Not real. Power lingered beneath it, old and controlled in a way that made his instincts sharpen.

Ryder felt it too and muttered under his breath. "That’s not council magic." Kael shook his head. "No. It’s older." He pressed his hand harder against the stone, and for a brief second, gold flickered beneath the surface before disappearing again. The bond reacted instantly, tightening so sharply it stole his breath for a moment. Ariana was close. Close enough that he could almost feel her presence through the barrier. That realization hit harder than anything else.

More wolves arrived behind them, spreading out across the slope with quiet precision. They were armed, alert, and waiting. Talia stepped forward, her expression serious. "Scouts saw movement near the southern ridge," she said. "Not council. We don’t recognize them." Ryder exhaled slowly. "Of course not." Kael finally turned to face them. "No one moves until I say." Talia nodded, though the tension in her stance did not ease. "If they move her again, we might lose her."

Kael already knew that. He could feel the bond shifting, subtle but real, like Ariana was being moved somewhere deeper inside. The thought made something in his chest tighten painfully. He stepped forward again and placed both hands against the stone. This time, he did not hold back. He let his wolf rise fully. Power pushed outward from him, heavy and controlled, pressing into the barrier without hesitation. The air shifted immediately, and the mountain responded. A deep vibration ran through the rock.

The crack came suddenly. Stone split down the middle, and golden light broke through. Snow fell from above as the ground shook beneath them. The barrier gave way just enough, opening a narrow gap. And beyond it was something none of them expected. A city carved into the mountain, white structures and bridges stretching across open space, glowing faintly with gold. Ryder stared. "What is that..." But the opening was already closing again, and Kael did not wait.

He moved instantly.

He crossed through the gap, and the air changed the moment he stepped inside. It was warmer, still, filled with the scent of stone and water. The ground beneath his feet was smooth, controlled, and unnatural in its precision. People moved through the city, but none of them were wolves or vampires. Every head turned toward him the second he appeared. Alarm spread quickly. A horn sounded, then another, echoing through the structure. Kael ignored it all. The bond pulled harder now, sharper than before. She was here.

Six armed figures dropped in front of him, blocking his path. Their armor was dark, marked with gold, their weapons already drawn. One of them stepped forward. "You shouldn’t be here, Alpha." Kael didn’t even look at him. "Move." The guard’s expression hardened. "You crossed into a restricted—" Kael cut him off, his voice cold. "You took what’s mine." The guards exchanged glances. "She does not belong to you," the leader said. Kael’s jaw tightened. "She’s my mate." The silence that followed was brief. "That doesn’t matter here," the guard replied.

Kael’s expression didn’t change. "It will."

They attacked. He shifted without hesitation, his wolf tearing through them with controlled, brutal force. The fight ended quickly, but he didn’t stay. The bond surged again, sharp and urgent this time, carrying something that made his chest tighten instantly. Fear. Ariana’s fear. Kael froze for half a second, then looked up. A circular structure stood above the rest, light pouring from it in steady waves of gold. He knew immediately. That was where she was.

He ran.

The sound of the city faded behind him as he climbed higher, moving faster than anything tried to stop him. The bond pulled harder with every step, almost painful now, like something inside him was reacting to her distress. He reached the upper level and saw the doors already open. Light flooded the room beyond. Then Ariana screamed.

Kael rushed inside and stopped.

She stood in the center of the chamber, surrounded by golden light, her body shaking as if she was barely holding herself together. Chains of light wrapped around her, tightening with every movement she made. A man stood beside her, dressed in black and gold, one hand raised as if controlling the power itself. He turned slowly when Kael entered, his expression calm, almost pleased.

"The Alpha finally made it," he said.

Ariana looked at Kael, her eyes wide, her breath uneven, and for a second, the light around her surged as if it recognized him. Then it tightened again, locking harder around her like it was afraid to let go.

And Kael understood one thing clearly.

She wasn’t just trapped.She was being held.
