Instead of collapsing into chaos, the pressure in the clearing shifted, drawing inward with a slow, deliberate force that made the space feel smaller around her and Kael. It didn’t feel like an attack anymore, and that change alone was enough to make her chest tighten.

Kael’s grip on her wrist hardened, his fingers pressing into her skin as his body went rigid beneath her hand. His breathing caught briefly before returning in uneven bursts, like he was forcing himself to stay present through something trying to drag him back under. "Ariana," he said, his voice rough but holding, and this time it didn’t fade.

She didn’t pull away. Her hand remained steady against his chest, grounding herself through the contact even as the pressure thickened around them. "I’m here," she said quietly, keeping her voice calm despite the tension building in her chest. "Stay with me."

The clearing responded to something unseen, the creatures slowing instead of surging, their movements becoming uneven as if they were waiting rather than attacking. The pressure that had been forcing the pack back no longer pressed outward with the same intensity, and the shift drew Ryder’s attention immediately.

"This isn’t right," he said under his breath, his stance tightening as he adjusted to the change. His gaze moved toward Ariana and Kael, his expression hardening as he felt the difference in the air.

Mira didn’t look away from them. "No," she said quietly. "It changed its focus."

Ariana felt that shift before she fully understood it. The pressure that had been centered on Kael no longer moved through him the same way, and the weight of it began to settle around her instead. It didn’t strike or force her back, but closed in slowly, deliberate and precise, as if it had found what it had been searching for.

Kael reacted instantly.

His grip tightened to the point of pain, his shoulders drawing inward as he felt the change through her. "No," he said again, stronger this time, the word carrying more force than before.

Ariana’s pulse quickened, but she didn’t step away. "Whatever you’re trying to do," she said, her voice steady even as the pressure pressed closer, "it won’t work."

The voice answered from everywhere at once, closer than before, no longer distant or echoing. "You misunderstand," it said, its tone calm in a way that felt far more dangerous than force. "I am not trying. I have already begun."

The pressure deepened, and this time Ariana felt it move through her instead of around her. It didn’t force control, but pressed against something beneath her skin as if testing it, searching for a response rather than creating one. The gold beneath her skin reacted instantly, flaring with instinctive resistance that pushed back against the intrusion.

Kael moved closer without thinking, his other hand rising to her shoulder as if to hold her in place. "Don’t let it in," he said, his voice low and urgent now.

Ariana swallowed, forcing her breath to steady as the pressure tightened again. "I’m not," she said, even as the strain began to show in the way her shoulders tensed.

The presence didn’t retreat.

"You already carry what is mine," it said.

Ariana’s gaze sharpened immediately. "No," she said, the answer coming without hesitation.

"Yes," it replied quietly.

Kael’s body tensed again, his grip tightening as something inside him reacted to the same shift. "It’s lying," he said, though the strain in his voice made it clear he wasn’t entirely certain.

Ariana felt the pull between them tighten again, not because the presence allowed it, but because Kael forced it to hold. The contact between them grounded her just enough to steady the pressure building inside her chest.

"Look at me," he said.

She did.

"You don’t belong to it," he said.

Ariana felt that before she understood it. The pressure didn’t press down anymore. It aligned.

Kael felt it too.

"I know," she said.
