Chapter 31
The sanctuary slowly settled into silence as the last echoes of the fight faded from the chamber. Dust drifted through the golden light, and the ancient dragon statues stood unmoving along the walls, watching over the throne as they had for centuries.
Ariana lowered her hands, and the last traces of golden light faded from her fingers. The warmth lingered, but her arms felt heavy now, like she had pushed herself further than her body was ready for.
Kael noticed immediately. "You okay?"
Ariana nodded, though her breathing was still uneven. "I think so."
She looked down at her hands again, flexing her fingers slightly. The glow was gone, but the feeling remained.
"That power feels... different."
Kael folded his arms. "Different good?"
She hesitated for a second. "Different powerful."
Vormerion’s deep voice echoed through the chamber. "Your power grows stronger every time you use it."
Ariana looked up. "So the more I use it, the stronger it becomes?"
"Yes," the dragon replied. "But your enemies will grow stronger as well."
Kael glanced toward the tunnel, his attention sharpening again. "They’ll come back."
"The hunter said that too," Ariana added quietly.
Kael shrugged. "Good."
She blinked at him. "You want them to come back?"
"I don’t like unfinished fights."
Ariana shook her head slightly. "You’re unbelievable."
Vormerion lifted his gaze toward the ceiling, toward the battlefield far above. Even here, the distant sounds of war continued, dragons roaring, wings cutting through the air, the unnatural cries of Abyss creatures echoing faintly through the mountain.
Ariana felt her chest tighten again.
"They’re still fighting."
"Yes."
She turned toward the tunnel, her voice softer now. "We can’t stay here forever."
Kael stepped closer to her. "You’re right," he said. "But you’re not ready yet."
Ariana frowned. "I just threw five Abyss hunters across the room."
Kael raised an eyebrow. "And you almost collapsed after."
She paused, then sighed. "...that’s also true."
Vormerion spoke again, his voice heavier this time.
"But the time has come."
Both Ariana and Kael looked up.
The dragon’s eyes burned brighter as he continued, "The battle above the mountain has reached its turning point."
Ariana’s heart began to race. "What does that mean?"
"The royal dragons are falling."
The words hit harder than any attack.
Images flashed through her mind—dragons burning in the sky, wings tearing under shadow, bodies falling through smoke and fire. Her hands tightened at her sides.
"I can help them."
Vormerion studied her carefully. "Yes. But not alone."
Kael stepped beside her. "Good thing she’s not."
The dragon spread his wings slightly, and the movement filled the chamber with a low rush of air. "The Sovereign does not fight alone."
The golden lines across the floor brightened suddenly. Energy surged through the sanctuary, stronger than before, rising from the ground itself. Ariana felt it instantly.
Warm. Steady. Answering her.
"What is that?" she asked.
"The sanctuary," Vormerion said. "It recognizes you. It will lend you its strength."
Kael glanced around. "So the mountain itself is on our side now."
"Yes."
Ariana looked down at her hands again as the faint glow returned beneath her skin. This time, it didn’t flicker. It held.
"Then what do I do when we go back up there?"
"You heal," the dragon answered.
Her breath caught. "And the ones who already died?"
"Royal dragons who served the Sovereign may rise again."
Ariana swallowed. "Through me."
"Yes."
Kael tilted his head slightly. "That sounds impressive."
"Resurrection demands a cost," Vormerion continued.
Ariana’s voice lowered. "What kind of cost?"
"Your life."
Silence fell.
Kael exhaled slowly. "Well... that’s not ideal."
Ariana didn’t look at him. Her gaze stayed on her hands as the golden light pulsed faintly beneath her skin.
"If I try to bring back too many..."
"You will burn with them."
The weight of that settled deep inside her chest.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she lifted her head.
"We still go."
Kael looked at her, really looked this time. Not just at the power, not just at the Sovereign. At her.
There was fear there. Real fear.
But she didn’t step back. He nodded once. "Then we go."
Vormerion watched her for a long moment before lowering his head slightly. "It is time for the Sovereign to return."
Kael smiled faintly. "Finally."
Ariana took a slow breath, steadying herself. Her heart was racing, but this time she didn’t let it stop her.
"I hope this works," she said quietly.
Kael stepped beside her, his voice lower now. "It will."
The bond between them pulsed again, warm and steady, grounding her.
"Follow me," Vormerion said.
The ancient dragon turned and moved toward the tunnel, each step shaking the stone beneath them.
Kael glanced at Ariana. "So."
She looked back at him. "So."
"You ready to save a dragon army?"
Ariana let out a breath that almost sounded like a laugh. "Not really."
Kael grinned. "Perfect."
They followed the dragon into the tunnel.
The climb back toward the surface felt longer than before. With every step, the sounds of battle grew louder. Roars echoed through the stone. Heat pressed against the walls. Smoke filled the air.
By the time they reached the exit, the world above was already burning.
Ariana stepped out first and froze.
The sky was chaos.
Dragons filled the air, their wings cutting through fire and shadow. Golden flames clashed with black energy as Abyss beasts swarmed like a living storm. In the distance, the Abyss Titan loomed over everything, its massive form crushing the mountains beneath it.
"It’s worse than before," Ariana said.
Kael stepped beside her. "Yeah."
"Way worse."
Several royal dragons fell from the sky, their bodies crashing into the mountains below. Ariana felt it like something tearing through her chest.
"We’re too late..."
"No," Vormerion said.
She turned.
The ancient dragon spread his wings, golden light flowing across his scales, brighter than before.
"Now the Sovereign returns."
Kael glanced at her. "Your move." 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
Ariana stepped forward to the edge of the cliff, her heart pounding as her hands trembled despite everything she had just learned. Fear pressed in, sharp and relentless. What if she failed? What if she wasn’t enough? What if the cost took everything from her?
Then another dragon fell from the sky.
Something inside her shifted.
No more hesitation.
She raised both hands, and the power surged through her stronger, steadier, as if it had been waiting for this moment.
Golden light exploded outward, spreading across the sky like dawn breaking through darkness.
For a moment,everything stopped.
Even the Abyss beasts hesitated.
Far in the distance, Augustus turned.
His golden eyes locked onto her.
And for the first time,
his calm expression disappeared.
Ariana’s voice carried across the battlefield.
"Stand."
Golden light shot into the sky.
The fallen dragons began to rise and something far deeper answered with them.
