Kael did not move when the pressure settled.

The four figures didn’t advance, didn’t strike, but their presence didn’t fade either. It stayed, precise and controlled, locked onto him in a way that made it clear distance wouldn’t change anything. For a few seconds, it felt like everything had paused on the edge of something unfinished.

Then, just as quietly as they had appeared, the pressure shifted.

Not gone. Not retreating. Just... pulling back enough to release the space without fully leaving it. The air loosened slightly, the weight lifting just enough for movement to be possible again, but Kael could still feel them. Watching. Measuring. Waiting for what he would do next.

That was worse than if they had attacked.

Kael did not leave.

He knew he should. Even standing still felt dangerous, like the moment he relaxed, something inside him would take over again. The pressure in his chest had not disappeared. It had only changed, settling into something quieter but far more controlled, and that made it harder to trust.

Still, he remained where he was.

It was not because he thought things were safe. It was because something in him did not want to move, and that unsettled him more than anything else. The hesitation did not feel like his own.

A few steps away, Mira watched him without stepping back. She was not tense, and she did not look like she was preparing to run. She simply stood there, focused and calm in a way that felt out of place.

Kael ran a hand through his hair and let out a slow breath. His breathing had steadied, but the pressure inside him remained. Before, it had felt like something building toward an explosion. Now, it felt contained, as if it had already decided what it was and no longer needed to break out. That did not make it better.

It made it worse.

"You’re still here," Mira said.

Kael glanced at her. "So are you."

"I thought you’d leave."

"I was going to."

"But you didn’t."

Kael looked away for a moment, searching for an answer that made sense. He could not find one.

"I don’t know," he said.

Mira nodded slightly, accepting that without pushing further. The silence between them stretched for a few seconds. Kael lowered his gaze to his hand and flexed his fingers slowly. The faint traces of lightning followed his movement, staying close to his skin instead of reacting outward. That was different.

Before, it had been unstable.Now, it followed him. Or at least, it seemed to.

"You said I’m not losing control," he said.

Mira’s eyes shifted to his hand. "I said you’re not the one deciding anymore."

Kael frowned. "That doesn’t help."

"No," she said. "It doesn’t."

He exhaled quietly and looked around. The ground still showed the damage from earlier, with cracks spreading unevenly beneath his feet. The air still felt slightly distorted in places. But everything else was still. Like something was watching.

"You’re not afraid," he said.

Mira shook her head. "I am."

"You don’t act like it."

"I don’t need to run to feel it."

Kael did not respond right away. There was something about the way she said that stayed with him. He took a small step back, creating a bit more distance between them.

"You should still leave," he said. "This isn’t over."

"I know."

"Then why are you still here?"

Mira paused before answering. "Because you’re not as far gone as you think."

Kael let out a short breath that did not quite reach a laugh. "You don’t know that."

"I do."

"How?"

"You stopped."

Kael’s expression tightened. "That doesn’t mean anything."

"It does," she said. "You stopped more than once."

The memory came back immediately. His claws close enough to strike, the pressure pushing him forward, and the moment he forced himself to stop.

Kael looked down at his hands again. "That doesn’t mean I’ll stop next time."

"No," Mira said. "But it means you can."

Kael did not answer. The air shifted.

It was subtle, but both of them felt it.

Kael’s attention sharpened immediately. The storm inside him reacted, but instead of surging outward, it pulled inward, tightening.

Mira noticed. "What is it?"

Kael stayed still, focusing. "It’s reacting."

"To what?"

"Something else."

The storm shifted again, and this time Kael felt something darker in it, something that had not been there before. It was controlled, but no longer neutral.

Mira stepped a little closer. "Is it getting worse?"

Kael shook his head slightly. "It’s changing."

"That doesn’t sound good."

"It’s not trying to break out anymore," he said.

Mira frowned. "That sounds better."

"It’s not," Kael said. "Now it feels like it knows what it’s doing."

Mira didn’t respond.Kael clenched his hand slowly. The lightning followed without delay, tightening along his skin in a precise way.Before, it had been unstable.Now, it felt intentional.

"I don’t think this is just about control," he said.

Mira looked at him. "Then what is it?"

Kael hesitated, then answered, "I think it’s learning."

Mira studied him for a moment, her gaze steady, like she was listening to something he couldn’t hear.

"Kael," she said.

His head lifted sharply. "I didn’t tell you my name."

Mira didn’t look surprised. "No," she said. "You didn’t."

Kael stared at her, his expression tightening. "Then how do you know it?"

Mira held his gaze. "Because it’s not just you that’s changing."

Something about the way she said it didn’t feel like a guess. It felt like she already knew more than she should.

Kael didn’t like that. Not the answer, and not the way the storm inside him reacted to her saying his name. The air shifted again, stronger this time.

Kael felt it immediately. His chest tightened as something brushed against his awareness.For a second, he thought of Ariana.

The feeling was faint and gone almost instantly, but it was enough to make him pause. The storm reacted immediately, tightening again, like it didn’t like where his attention had gone.

Mira stepped closer. "Kael?"

He nodded once. "I felt something."

"What?"

He hesitated. "Someone."

Mira didn’t ask who.

"She’s still alive," she said.

Kael shook his head slightly. "You don’t know that."

"No," she admitted. "But you felt her."

Kael didn’t respond. He didn’t trust what he felt anymore.The storm moved again.This time, it spread slightly.

Not out of control.On purpose. Kael felt it clearly. And this time, he didn’t try to stop it.

Mira noticed immediately. "Kael."

He didn’t answer. His eyes had darkened, the gold no longer as clear as before. Something deeper was starting to show through.He took a step forward, not toward her, not away, just forward. The ground cracked beneath his foot, but the movement followed him.

Mira’s voice lowered. "What are you doing?"

Kael looked at his hand, then slowly closed it. The storm answered immediately, but instead of breaking out, it moved exactly the way he did.

For a moment, everything felt steady. And that was when he understood.It wasn’t fighting him anymore.It was working with him. And that realization felt worse than losing control ever had.

Far away, Ariana dropped to her knees.

The pressure hit her suddenly, strong enough to steal her breath. Her hand pressed against her chest as something unfamiliar moved through her. It wasn’t the bond. But it came from him.

Her voice trembled. "Kael..."

When she reached, something answered. And it didn’t feel like him anymore.
