Chapter 155
Ariana stayed silent for a few seconds after his answer, trying to process the fact that everything between them had suddenly become much larger than the two of them. The tension that had filled the room earlier had changed shape again. Before, it had been about control, about the Lycan, about whether Kael could hold himself together. Now it felt heavier because the threat was no longer hidden behind instinct or fear.
It had rules.
It had witnesses.
And apparently, it had an entire pack willing to decide what happened to him.
"You’re telling me they can actually force this?" she asked finally.
Kael pushed himself away from the door and walked farther into the room, running one hand through his hair before stopping near the window. Ariana noticed the way his shoulders tightened again, the way every conversation about the pack seemed to add another layer of exhaustion to him.
"They can try," he said.
"That’s not the same thing."
"No," he admitted. "But if enough Alphas support it, the trial becomes official."
Ariana stared at him. "And what exactly happens during this trial?"
Kael was quiet for a moment before answering, like he was deciding how much to tell her.
"The pack challenges the Alpha’s judgment," he said. "If they believe the Alpha is unstable, incapable of leading, or dangerous to the territory, they can demand proof that he’s still fit to rule."
"And if they decide you’re not?"
Kael looked at her directly. "Then I lose the right to lead."
The words settled heavily into the room.
Ariana folded her arms tightly across her chest, more to steady herself than anything else. "So they’re threatening your position unless you accept a bond you don’t want."
Kael let out a low breath. "That’s one way to put it."
"And the other way?"
"The pack would say they’re trying to protect the territory."
Ariana shook her head immediately. "No. They’re trying to control you."
Kael did not answer right away, which told her enough.
Outside, the wind moved through the trees again, quieter now, but the sound only made the silence inside feel heavier.
"How long has this law existed?" she asked.
"Long before I was born."
"And they’ve actually used it before?"
Kael’s expression tightened slightly. "Yes."
The answer made her stomach turn.
Ariana walked closer to him slowly, stopping a few feet away as she studied his face. "Has it ever happened to you?"
"No."
"But you think it will now."
Kael leaned one shoulder against the wall beside the window before answering. "The pack tolerated a lot from me before tonight. The Lycan getting stronger was already making them nervous. Choosing you over the bond just gave them a reason to act."
Ariana frowned slightly. "You keep saying ’choosing me’ like it’s a mistake."
"That’s not what I’m saying."
"Then what are you saying?"
Kael looked away briefly before answering. "I’m saying there’s a difference between wanting something and understanding what it costs."
The honesty in that hurt more than she expected.
Ariana crossed the remaining distance between them. "And if it costs you the pack?"
Kael’s jaw tightened.
"That’s exactly the problem," he said quietly.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Ariana could see the conflict clearly now. He wasn’t afraid of the wolves themselves. He was afraid of what choosing her might destroy, not only for him, but for the territory depending on him.
"You’re thinking about stepping away," she realized.
Kael’s eyes lifted back to hers immediately. "No."
"But you thought about it."
The silence that followed confirmed it.
Ariana stared at him, disbelief mixing with frustration. "You would seriously consider giving them what they want?"
"No," he said firmly. "I would consider removing myself before they turned this territory into a battlefield."
"That’s not better."
"It might be."
Ariana shook her head. "Running isn’t protecting anyone."
Kael’s expression hardened slightly. "You think staying and letting the pack split apart over this is better?"
"Yes," she answered immediately. "Because at least that’s honest."
The tension between them sharpened again, not from anger, but because both of them understood how dangerous this conversation really was.
Kael let out a slow breath and looked away, his hand tightening briefly against the wall beside him before relaxing again.
"You don’t understand what wolves become when they think their Alpha is unstable," he said quietly.
"Then explain it to me."
He was silent for several seconds before finally answering.
"They stop listening," he said. "Fear spreads first. Then loyalty starts breaking apart with it. The territory becomes divided, Alphas start choosing sides, and eventually someone decides removing the problem is easier than fixing it."
Ariana felt a chill move through her chest.
"And the problem is me," she said quietly.
Kael’s gaze snapped back to her immediately. "No."
"That’s what they think."
"That doesn’t make them right."
"But it still makes me the reason they’re turning against you."
Kael stepped toward her before she could retreat further into that thought. "Listen to me carefully," he said, his voice lower now but completely steady. "The problem started long before you."
Ariana held his gaze.
"The Lycan," she said.
"Yes."
"And Mira thinks the bond fixes it."
"The pack thinks the bond fixes everything."
Ariana let out a quiet breath, trying to untangle everything at once. "And what do you think?"
Kael was quiet for so long that she thought he might not answer.
Finally, he looked at her fully and spoke with complete honesty.
"I think they’re terrified of uncertainty," he said. "And you’re the first thing I’ve chosen that they can’t control."
The words hit harder than she expected.
Ariana felt her chest tighten, not because of fear this time, but because she realized how alone he must have been for years if every decision around him had been treated like something belonging to the pack instead of himself.
"That’s not fair," she said quietly.
Kael gave a tired half smile that disappeared almost immediately. "Being Alpha was never fair."
The room fell quiet again.
Ariana moved closer without thinking, her hand reaching for his almost automatically now. He looked down briefly when her fingers wrapped around his, and she noticed the way some of the tension in his shoulders eased from the contact alone.
"You’re still holding yourself too tightly," she said softly.
Kael looked back at her. "That’s usually how leadership works."
"No," Ariana replied gently. "That’s how survival works."
Something in his expression shifted at that.
For a moment, he just looked at her, quiet and tired and carrying far more than anyone should have expected him to carry alone.
Then he stepped closer.
Not because the Lycan pushed him this time.
Because he wanted to.
His free hand moved carefully to her waist, slower than before, giving her time to step back if she wanted to.
She didn’t.
"Ariana," he said quietly, "if this gets worse—"
"It probably will," she interrupted softly.
A faint breath escaped him, almost frustrated, almost amused.
"You really know how to ruin dramatic speeches."
A small smile finally appeared on her face. "You were being dramatic."
"I was trying to be serious."
"You can do both."
For the first time that night, a real laugh escaped him.
It was brief, quiet, and tired, but real enough to make something loosen in the room between them.
Then his expression softened slightly as he looked at her again.
"I don’t know what happens next," he admitted.
Ariana’s fingers tightened gently around his hand. "Then we figure it out when it comes."
Kael studied her for a moment before nodding once.
For now, that answer was enough.
Even if both of them knew the peace inside this room wasn’t going to last very long.
