Chapter 45
Ariana did not move as she kept her eyes on Augustus standing in the broken doorway, as if he had always been there. He looked calm, almost relaxed, like nothing in this place could affect him, and that was what unsettled her the most. The darkness around him spread slowly across the floor, moving like something alive until it reached her golden light. The moment the two forces touched, the air shifted, and she felt a tight pressure settle in her chest, not painful, but unmistakably wrong.
"You shouldn’t be here," she said, her voice steady even as tension built inside her.
Augustus smiled faintly, clearly amused. "And yet, here I am." His voice did not echo like hers had; it settled into the space, heavy and grounded, as if it belonged there more than anything else. That alone made her instincts tighten, because nothing about this place should have accepted him.
Beside her, the woman of light stepped forward, her presence sharpening instantly. "You broke the boundary of the trial," she said without hesitation, her tone no longer calm. Augustus barely looked at her, his attention clearly fixed on Ariana instead. "I break whatever I want," he replied, and the chamber trembled slightly as if responding to the certainty in his voice.
Ariana clenched her hands, and the golden light beneath her skin rose immediately. It wrapped around her body in a controlled shield, steady and close, grounding her as she focused on holding it together. "You’re not taking anything from here," she said, her voice firmer now. This time, Augustus looked at her properly, and the amusement in his expression faded into something sharper.
"That’s not why I came," he said, studying her.
Ariana frowned slightly, not breaking eye contact. "Then why are you here?" Augustus took a slow step forward, and the darkness followed him like it was part of him, stretching closer without hesitation. "I came to see if it’s true," he said.
Her chest tightened at the way he said it. "If what is true?"
His eyes darkened just enough to make the shift noticeable. "That you’re becoming something dangerous." The golden light around her flickered once before steadying again, and she forced herself not to react. "I’m not your enemy," she said.
Augustus tilted his head slightly, as if considering that. "You will be." The words settled into the space without echo, heavy and certain. Ariana instinctively reached inward, searching for the bond. "Kael..." she whispered, but nothing answered clearly, only distance stretching between them.
That absence unsettled her more than anything else.
The space between them tightened as light and darkness pressed against each other without moving, as if both sides were waiting for something to break first. Then a sharp crack split the air, and the ground beneath her feet fractured suddenly. Ariana’s eyes widened as she looked down. "What is happening?"
The chamber shook violently as the pillars trembled and the glowing carvings flickered, struggling to hold together. The woman of light turned quickly, her voice sharper now. "This is not part of the trial." Another crack followed, deeper this time, and even Augustus glanced down briefly, his expression shifting with interest.
"Interesting," he murmured.
A low, heavy sound rose from below, not just noise but movement, something shifting beneath the ground itself. Ariana felt it through her feet as the sensation traveled upward, settling into her chest like cold weight. "This doesn’t feel like a test," she said, her voice quieter now. The woman hesitated, and that alone made it worse. "It isn’t supposed to happen like this."
The chamber shook harder, and even the darkness around Augustus pulled back slightly, reacting to something else entirely. Then the floor gave way.
Ariana didn’t have time to react before the stone beneath her feet collapsed. She dropped instantly into the darkness, her breath catching as cold air rushed past her. "Kael!" His name left her without thought as the golden light flared around her, wrapping her body in a protective shield.
Above her, the chamber began to close.
For a brief moment, she saw Augustus standing at the edge, watching her fall. He didn’t move or follow, but his expression had changed slightly. "That wasn’t supposed to happen," he said quietly, almost to himself.
Then the opening sealed. The light disappeared. Ariana kept falling.
There were no walls, no ground, nothing to measure distance or direction. The darkness stretched endlessly, swallowing everything around her. Her heart raced, but she forced herself to breathe slowly, trying to stay grounded. "This is part of the trial," she whispered, though it didn’t feel like one.
Something about this felt wrong.
She closed her eyes and focused, steadying herself as the golden light around her grew stronger. It pushed outward against the darkness, carving space around her as she tried to regain control. For a moment, nothing happened. Then the darkness moved.
Ariana felt it instantly. This was not empty. Something was there, watching.
Her fall slowed unnaturally, as if something had decided to stop her. Then suddenly, she landed, her feet hitting solid ground. She stumbled slightly but managed to stay upright, her breath uneven as she looked around.
The ground beneath her was smooth and dark, almost like glass. There was no sky, only endless black stretching in every direction. The silence returned, but this time it felt closer, like something was standing just beyond her reach.
Ariana took a cautious step forward, her movements slow and deliberate. "Where am I?" she asked, but her voice did not echo or return, as if the space had swallowed it whole. That alone was enough to make her stop, her instincts tightening as the silence pressed in around her.
Then she felt it. Not a sound, not movement, but something far more certain. A presence, close enough to brush against her awareness without revealing itself. It wrapped around her senses quietly, and her entire body tensed as the realization settled in. She was not alone.
She turned slowly. At first, there was nothing. Then the darkness shifted.
Something stepped out of it.Her breath caught. It was her.
The same face. The same eyes. But something was wrong. The golden light around this version of her flickered too fast, too sharp, and beneath it, something darker moved like cracks spreading through the light.
"You made it," the other Ariana said, her voice the same but colder.
Ariana took a step back. "You’re not real." The other version tilted her head slightly, watching her carefully. "That’s what you want to believe."
"This is an illusion," Ariana said, trying to steady her voice. The other Ariana smiled faintly. "Is it?" She raised her hand, and golden light formed before twisting as darkness spread through it.
Ariana felt it immediately. That power.
The one she had been trying to ignore.
"I’m not like you," she said.
The other Ariana stepped closer, unbothered. "You’re exactly like me." The ground trembled beneath them again, and Ariana felt the pressure building. "This is a test," she said.
"Yes," the other Ariana replied. "But not the one you think." Her expression sharpened slightly. "This place isn’t teaching you. It’s unlocking you."
A chill ran through Ariana. "No." The other version pointed directly at her chest. "You already started."
Ariana shook her head. "I didn’t." The answer came immediately. "You did."
The golden light around her flickered again, unstable this time. The other Ariana watched it closely, her smile returning. "There it is."
Ariana clenched her fists. "I’m in control."
"Then prove it." 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
She moved too fast to follow. One moment she stood still, and the next she was right in front of Ariana.
Ariana reacted instantly, releasing a burst of golden light that pushed her back. The ground cracked beneath them, but the other Ariana didn’t fall. She only smiled.
"That’s not control."
Ariana pushed harder. "Stay back." The light grew stronger, but something pushed against it. The other Ariana raised her hand, and her power rose to meet Ariana’s, heavier and sharper.
Ariana’s eyes widened. "Why does it feel like this?"
The other Ariana stepped closer again. "Because it’s not just yours."
"What do you mean?"
Her voice lowered. "It takes something. Every time."
Ariana froze. "No."
"You felt it."
Silence filled the space. Because she had.
The other Ariana stepped closer again. "And you still think you can control it?"
Ariana shook her head slowly. "I won’t let it take anything from me."
The other Ariana smiled softly. "It already has."
Ariana’s breath caught. Then the darkness above them split open.
A violent crack tore through the space as cold air rushed down. Ariana looked up, and her heart dropped.
Augustus.
The opening widened, and darkness poured through it. Something moved behind him, large and watching. Ariana stepped back slowly. "This is not part of the trial."
The other Ariana looked up, then smiled.
"No," she said quietly.
"This is where it really begins."
The darkness tore open wider.
And whatever stood behind Augustus,
was finally coming through.
