The Alpha And The Fifth Blood

Chapter 2

Kael Vaughn felt it before he heard it. The moment the power awakened, every instinct inside him snapped tight. He froze mid-step in the forest as a surge of energy tore through the night, sending a tremor through the ground beneath his boots. It did not feel like ordinary power. It felt ancient, wrong in a way that reached deeper than instinct, and his wolf reacted instantly, rising with a sharp awareness that made his chest tighten.

He slowly lifted his head and scanned the forest. The trees stood still under the pale moonlight, but the air had changed. It felt charged, heavy with something unnatural that did not belong in his territory. Then it came again. Another pulse, stronger this time, rolling through the ground and into his body. Kael’s jaw tightened as recognition settled in. There was only one force capable of releasing energy like that.

The Fifth Blood.

For centuries, it had been nothing more than a warning passed down through the bloodlines. A legend meant to remind them what happened when balance was broken. If the Fifth Blood awakened, war would follow. Kael had spent his entire life protecting that balance, making sure nothing crossed the lines that held their world together. Now, standing in the middle of his territory, he felt that balance shift in real time, and it was already too late to stop it.

Movement broke the silence behind him as members of his pack stepped out from the shadows, tension clear in every line of their bodies. Ryder, his Beta, moved forward first. "You felt that too," he said. Kael did not answer immediately. His gaze had already shifted toward the distant lights of the human town at the edge of their territory, where the energy was building with every passing second. "Yes," he said at last, his voice low and controlled. "That wasn’t wolf energy," Ryder added. "No," Kael replied. "That was bloodline power."

Silence settled heavily over the group. One of the younger wolves shifted uneasily, his voice tight. "You think it’s the prophecy?" Kael did not answer, but he did not need to. Everyone there knew what that meant. Four bloodlines ruled their world, each holding its own territory and power. But beneath all of that, there was another name, one that had been erased for a reason. The Fifth Blood. A lineage so dangerous that the others had tried to wipe it out completely.

"If the council hears about this..." Ryder started. "They will," Kael cut in. The council always knew. And when they did, they would send hunters with one purpose. Kill the Fifth Blood before it became a threat. Another surge rippled through the air, closer now, and this time Kael felt something else beneath it. His wolf stirred violently, but not with fear. With something deeper. A pull.

It locked onto him without warning, sharp and undeniable, dragging at him in a way he had never felt before. Kael frowned as tension built in his chest. That should not have been possible. His instincts were controlled. Precise. This was neither. This felt like something reaching into him and refusing to let go. His wolf growled low inside him, the word forming clearly in his mind.

Mine.

Kael went completely still. "What did you say?" Ryder asked, watching him closely. Kael had not realized he had spoken. "Nothing," he said, but the pull only grew stronger. It was no longer just a feeling pressing at him. It was a command. Go. Now. He clenched his jaw, forcing control back into his expression. "Something is happening in that town." Ryder stepped forward. "You want to check it out?" "Yes." "I’ll bring the pack." "No."

The answer came immediately, and even Kael felt how absolute it sounded. Ryder’s brow lifted slightly. "You’re going alone?" Kael hesitated for half a second, but every instinct inside him pushed forward, not warning him to stay back, but forcing him to move. Now. "Yes," he said finally. "This could be a trap," Ryder warned. Kael’s expression hardened. "Then whoever set it will regret it." Without another word, he stepped forward and shifted.

Bones cracked. Muscle tore and reformed. In seconds, a massive black wolf stood where he had been, his golden eyes burning under the moonlight. Then he ran. The forest blurred around him as wind rushed past, carrying the scent of rain and pine, but something else cut through it. Blood. He slowed slightly as the scent sharpened, the pull growing stronger with every step. It was not wolf. Not human. Something else entirely.

He broke through the last line of trees and the human town came into view. At the end of a narrow street, a small house stood with shattered windows and its front door hanging open. Power rolled out of it in steady waves. Kael slowed as every instinct sharpened at once. He could feel the danger, smell the blood, and sense the power. But beneath all of it, there was something else that made his chest tighten in a way he did not understand.

He shifted back into human form just outside the door, barely noticing the rain soaking into his skin. Voices echoed from inside, male and controlled. Hunters. Kael stepped forward silently, and then the air inside exploded. Glass shattered. Wind tore through the house. And in that moment, he felt it. The bond hit him hard enough to make him stagger. His wolf went completely still, and for a second, he could not breathe.

Because standing in the center of the ruined kitchen, silver light glowing beneath her skin, was a young woman.

The moment their eyes met, something locked into place inside him. A name surfaced in his mind without warning. Ariana. His wolf spoke immediately, clear and absolute.

Mate.

Kael’s blood ran cold. No. That was impossible. His gaze dropped to the silver light in her veins, and the truth hit him harder than anything else.

The Fifth Blood.

His mate.

One of them turned toward him slowly and smiled. "Well," the man said calmly, lifting a blade to Ariana’s throat, "looks like the Alpha finally arrived." Kael’s wolf surged forward with fury as the blade pressed closer to her skin. "Take one more step," the hunter added quietly, "and she dies."
