The sky split open slowly, unnaturally, as if something unseen was forcing the world itself apart. At first, it was only a thin crack in the clouds, a dark line stretching across the battlefield, easy to mistake for nothing more than a trick of light. Then it widened. The edges pulled back under invisible pressure, the air bending around it as though reality itself was struggling to hold. Darkness poured from the tear, not smoke or shadow, but something deeper and older, something that felt alive in a way that made the world recoil. The battlefield fell silent. Hundreds of dragons froze midair, their massive wings suspended as every creature turned toward the sky, instinct overriding instinct, fear replacing fury.

Ariana felt it before she understood it. The golden power inside her recoiled violently, pain shooting through her chest and down her arms as if her own blood was trying to escape her body. Her breath hitched as she forced herself to stay upright, her fingers tightening at her sides. "Something’s wrong," she whispered, though the words felt small compared to what she was feeling. Nearby, Kael froze mid-fight with the Abyssal, his entire focus snapping upward. Even the creature stilled, its silver eyes lifting toward the widening rift as if it recognized what was coming and did not welcome it.

The Dragon King descended through the clouds, his massive form cutting through the air with a weight that seemed heavier than before. His voice echoed inside Ariana’s mind, no longer calm, no longer distant. The prison is opening. Her heart slammed hard against her ribs. "You said Augustus was sealed," she said, her voice tightening despite her effort to steady it. The answer came without hesitation, but it carried something new. "He was. But the seal weakens whenever a new Sovereign awakens." Ariana’s stomach dropped as the realization settled into place, heavy and unavoidable. "You mean I caused this?" There was a brief pause, and then the truth came, quiet but absolute. "Not intentionally. But yes."

Above them, the fortress hovered beneath the widening tear, its runes burning with dark energy as power streamed upward into the sky. Malrec stood at its edge, arms raised, completely still, completely in control. He was not struggling to hold the rift open. He was feeding it, sustaining it, as if this moment had been planned long before Ariana had ever awakened. Below, Kael shifted back into human form, blood running down his shoulder, his white eyes fixed on the sky. "That doesn’t look good," he muttered. Ariana let out a shaky breath despite everything pressing against her. "That’s your professional opinion?" Kael glanced at her briefly, and for a moment, there was something almost human in his expression. "I’m trying to stay optimistic."

Another pulse of energy rolled out of the tear, stronger this time, shaking the mountains beneath them. Stone cracked beneath their feet, and dragons roared uneasily as the pressure in the air grew heavier, thicker, harder to breathe through. Even the Dragon King shifted, his wings adjusting as if bracing against something he could not control. Ariana noticed immediately. "You’re afraid." The answer came without hesitation. "Yes." That single word hit harder than anything else she had heard. She stared at him. "You’re the king of dragons." His voice dropped, steady but heavy. The tear widened again, and something moved behind it. A massive shape pressed forward, its presence so heavy that the air itself seemed to tighten around it. Kael stepped closer to Ariana without thinking, his presence grounding even as everything else fell apart. "You still standing?" he asked. "Barely." "Good." She turned to him, disbelief breaking through the fear. "That’s good?" He shrugged slightly, as if the answer was obvious. "If you fall right now, we’re all dead." Despite everything, a small, breathless laugh escaped her, fragile but real.

Malrec lowered one hand, and the tear stabilized, no longer expanding but holding its shape like a doorway forced open by force alone. His gaze settled on Ariana, calm and certain. "This was never about killing you," he said. Ariana narrowed her eyes despite the pressure crushing against her chest. "Could’ve fooled me." "I needed you to awaken fully." Her chest tightened. "You used me." "Yes." Kael stepped forward instantly, his presence turning cold. "Bad idea." Malrec ignored him completely. "The prison could only be opened by Sovereign power." Ariana felt the cold settle deeper. "So you used me to break the seal." "Exactly."

The Dragon King roared sharply, the sound echoing across the mountains. He is waking. The Abyssal reacted first, retreating instantly before launching into the sky and disappearing into the clouds without hesitation. Ariana blinked, stunned. "Even that thing is running." The man beside her spoke quietly, his voice tight. "Because it knows what’s coming." Kael lifted his gaze toward the sky again, the white in his eyes burning brighter with something ancient. "Then let him come." Ariana turned sharply. "You can’t be serious." Kael rolled his shoulders, his stance steady despite everything. "If this Augustus wants a fight... we’ll give him one."

The tear split wider, and then it happened. A massive hand forced its way through the rift, larger than a palace tower, covered in glowing runes that shifted like living symbols. The mountains trembled as it pushed forward, tearing the sky open further with raw force. Ariana’s breath caught as fear hit her fully for the first time. "That’s not possible." Kael stared upward, his voice quieter now. "That’s definitely a hand." The world shook as more of him emerged, a towering figure forming from the darkness as dragons scattered in every direction, their earlier dominance replaced by instinctive retreat.

When he fully stepped into the world, everything went still. He was not a monster or a beast, but a man, impossibly large, his golden eyes burning with ancient power that made the air itself feel smaller. The Dragon King’s voice trembled. "Augustus." The name spread across the battlefield like a warning. The giant looked down at the world, at the dragons, the city, and finally at Ariana. The moment his gaze met hers, her power surged violently, reacting to him in a way she could not control. A slow smile formed on his face. "So... another one has taken my throne." Kael stepped beside her, steady and unyielding. "Yeah." Augustus’ eyes narrowed slightly. "And the Wolf King stands beside her." His voice rolled across the mountains, calm and absolute. "You’ve been busy while I was gone." Then he raised one massive hand, and the sky erupted into flames as dragons screamed and the city shook beneath the return of the First Sovereign.
