Chapter 6

The entire clearing went silent.

Even the wind seemed to stop, as if the world itself was holding its breath. Ariana Sinclair floated several feet above the ground, surrounded by blazing golden light that pulsed outward in steady waves. The energy moved around her like a storm that refused to break, pressing against everything nearby with quiet force. Her hair lifted slightly, untouched by gravity, and her eyes burned gold, not faint or soft, but strong enough that every supernatural creature in the clearing felt it.

Fear.

Kael Vaughn stared at her, his chest tight in a way he had never experienced before. His wolf had gone completely silent, something that had never happened in all the years he had carried it. Not fear. Not submission. Just silence, as if even it did not understand what it was looking at. For the first time, Kael did not feel in control of the situation. He did not even feel like he understood it.

Cassian was the first to recover. The vampire lord brushed dirt from his coat and straightened, his red eyes sharp with interest. "Well," he said quietly, "that explains why the council panicked." No one answered him. No one looked away from Ariana. Even the hunters had gone still, caught between fear and disbelief.

The winged creature stepped forward slowly, its silver eyes fixed on her. "This is impossible," it said, and for the first time, its voice carried something close to uncertainty. Kael turned sharply toward it. "What is?" The creature didn’t look at him. "The Fifth Blood was never supposed to awaken like this." Before Kael could respond, Ariana gasped.

The golden light around her flared violently. Pain tore through her body, sharp and overwhelming, like something inside her was breaking open from the inside. "I can’t!" she cried, her voice cracking under the strain. Kael moved instantly. "Ariana!" The moment he stepped closer, the energy surged again, stronger and unstable, forcing him back as he braced himself against the pressure.

Cassian’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Interesting," he murmured. The winged creature shifted uneasily. "The power is unstable." Ariana clutched her chest, struggling to breathe as the light spread beneath her skin like fire trapped under glass. "What’s happening to me?" she asked, her voice breaking. No one answered. Because no one knew.

Kael’s jaw tightened as something shifted inside him. He could feel the bond now, not just the mate bond, but something deeper, something older that did not belong to instinct or choice. His wolf stirred again, uneasy this time, reacting to something it did not recognize. This was not natural. This was not something any of them had prepared for.

Cassian folded his arms, watching closely. "The council archives mentioned something like this," he said. Kael shot him a sharp look. "Then talk." Cassian smirked slightly. "The Fifth Blood doesn’t simply awaken." He nodded toward Ariana. "It changes." The winged creature turned toward him sharply. "You’re wrong." Cassian raised an eyebrow. "Am I?" "The Fifth Blood is meant to keep balance," the creature said. "Not rule." Cassian let out a quiet laugh. "That’s what the council wants everyone to believe."

Before anyone could continue, Ariana screamed.

The golden light exploded outward again, stronger than before. Trees cracked under the force, and the ground split as the energy surged uncontrollably. Even the winged creature was forced back. Kael pushed forward through the pressure, ignoring the strain on his body. "Ariana!" Her eyes snapped open, wild and unfocused, like she wasn’t seeing anything in front of her. The energy rose higher, spiraling into the sky, pulling everything with it.

Cassian’s expression shifted, losing its amusement. "That’s not good."

Kael didn’t hesitate. He lunged forward and grabbed her hand as she began to fall.

Everything stopped.

The energy froze mid-motion. The wind died instantly. The clearing fell into complete silence, as if something had been cut off at the source. Ariana blinked slowly, the wildness fading from her eyes as her body went limp. She collapsed into Kael’s arms, her breathing shallow and uneven. "Ariana," he said quietly, his voice lower now, steadier. Her golden eyes flickered weakly. "I didn’t mean to do that." His expression softened, just slightly. "I know."

Behind them, Cassian let out a low whistle. "Well," he said, more serious now, "that confirms it." Kael didn’t turn. "Confirms what?" Cassian’s voice dropped. "The Alpha bond." Kael went completely still. The winged creature stepped forward again. "That’s impossible." Cassian shrugged. "And yet it happened." He gestured toward Ariana. "The Alpha and the Fifth Blood. Bound together."

Kael’s wolf growled low in his mind.Before anyone could respond, a deep horn echoed through the forest.

The sound rolled through the clearing, heavy and final. Every head turned. The winged creature stiffened. "No," it said under its breath. Kael lifted his head. "What is that?" Cassian’s smile returned slowly. "The rest of the council."

Ariana stirred weakly in his arms. "How many... are there?" Cassian glanced toward the trees as more torches appeared, spreading endlessly through the forest. Dozens. Then more. His smile widened. "Enough to start a war."

Kael’s expression hardened instantly. "Then we’re leaving." Cassian let out a quiet laugh. "Too late."

Something massive moved through the forest. Trees snapped. Branches broke. The ground trembled under heavy steps as a towering white wolf stepped into the clearing, its blue eyes burning with cold authority.

Kael’s blood ran cold.

"The High Alpha."

Silence fell again.

The wolf shifted, bones cracking as it took human form. A tall man stepped forward, his presence heavier than anything else in the clearing. His gaze locked onto Ariana.

Then he spoke. "Bring me the girl."
