The cold in the northern mountains was harsher than anything they had faced before. It cut through their clothes easily, sharp enough to make every breath feel thin and heavy in Ariana’s chest. Even the wind sounded quieter here, as if the mountains absorbed everything that didn’t belong. The silence wasn’t peaceful. It felt intentional.

Ariana sat near the edge of a narrow ridge, her arms wrapped loosely around her knees as she looked up at the sky. The stars seemed closer here, brighter and clearer, scattered across the darkness like something untouched. It should have felt calming after everything they had survived, but it didn’t. The stillness in the air felt like something waiting.

A few steps away, Kael stood with his attention fixed on their surroundings. He didn’t sit, didn’t relax, and didn’t let his guard down. Even in silence, he stayed ready, his posture steady and alert. It was as if he didn’t trust this place to stay quiet.

"You don’t have to keep watching like that," Ariana said softly.

"Yes, I do," Kael replied without turning.

Ariana let out a small breath. "I’m not going to disappear."

"That’s not what I’m worried about."

This time, he looked at her.

She tilted her head slightly. "Then what are you worried about?"

Kael walked over and sat beside her, though the tension in his shoulders didn’t fully leave. "This place is a trial. Nothing here is simple." Ariana nodded once. "I know."

Silence settled again, but it felt different now. The wind brushed gently against them, carrying a faint chill that no longer felt entirely natural. Ariana leaned back slightly, her gaze drifting upward.

"When everything started," she said quietly, "I thought I was just trying to survive."

"You were," Kael answered.

She shook her head slowly. "But now it feels like everything depends on me."

Kael glanced at her. "That’s because it does."

A small, breathless laugh escaped her. "That’s not comforting."

"It’s not supposed to be."

Ariana looked at him briefly. "You say that a lot."

"Because it’s true."

She smiled faintly before looking away again. The silence that followed felt more personal now, like something had shifted between them without being said. After a moment, she spoke again.

"Kael."

"Yeah."

"Why are you still here?"

Kael frowned slightly. "That’s a strange question."

"You could have left," Ariana said. "You could have gone back to your pack and stayed out of all this." Kael studied her for a moment. "Do you want me to leave?"

"No," she said immediately.

The answer came too fast. Too honest. She looked away, her voice softer now. "I just don’t understand."

Kael leaned back slightly, resting his arms on his knees. "I stayed because of you."

Ariana’s chest tightened. "Because of the bond?"

"That was part of it at first."

She looked at him again. "At first?"

Kael met her gaze directly. "Now it’s different."

Ariana’s voice dropped. "How?"

"I choose to stay."

The words were simple, but they carried weight. The bond between them pulsed again, warmer and stronger than before. Ariana looked down, trying to steady her breathing.

"You shouldn’t say things like that so easily," she murmured.

"Why not?"

"Because it makes things harder."

"Harder how?"

She hesitated before answering. "Because I might start depending on you."

Kael didn’t hesitate. "Then depend on me."

Ariana blinked. "That’s not how it works."

"It can be."

She shook her head slightly. "You don’t understand."

"Then explain it."

Ariana stayed quiet for a moment. "If something happens to me, I don’t want you to be affected."

"That’s not your choice."

"It should be."

"It’s not."

His voice was firm now. There was no space left for argument. The air between them shifted again, heavier but real.

"You don’t get to decide that I don’t care," he added.

Ariana’s chest tightened. "I’m trying to protect you."

"I don’t need that kind of protection."

Her voice softened. "You might."

Kael leaned closer. "And you might need someone who stays."

Ariana held his gaze this time. There was no teasing in his expression now. No distance. Just certainty.

"You’re making this difficult," she said quietly.

"Good."

A soft breath escaped her. "You’re impossible."

"I’ve been told that before."

Ariana laughed, and this time it felt real. The tension in her chest eased slightly. Then her expression shifted again.

"Back there... when my power almost lost control... I was scared."

"I know."

"No, you don’t."

Kael frowned. "Then tell me."

Ariana looked down at her hands, watching the faint golden light beneath her skin move slowly. "I wasn’t scared of the enemy," she said. "I was scared of myself."

Her voice dropped. "It felt like there was something inside me that didn’t belong to me. Something that could destroy everything if I let it out." She swallowed. "And part of me almost did."

Kael reached out and took her hand. She tensed for a moment, then slowly relaxed.

"You didn’t," he said.

Ariana looked at him. "How do you know I won’t next time?"

Kael’s grip tightened slightly. "Because you’re still fighting it."

Her eyes softened. "And if one day I can’t?"

Kael didn’t hesitate. "Then I’ll stand in front of you."

Ariana’s breath caught.

"And I won’t move."

The words settled deep. Ariana looked at their hands, then back at him. The feeling in her chest wasn’t fear anymore. It was something warmer.

"You really mean that," she said.

"Yes."

Ariana exhaled slowly. "Then I guess I don’t have a choice."

Kael raised an eyebrow. "About what?"

"To trust you."

A small smirk appeared on his face. "Good choice."

Ariana rolled her eyes lightly. "Don’t get used to it."

"Too late."

They stayed there a while longer, not speaking, but not needing to. The silence felt calm now. Something had changed between them, steady and real.

Above them, the stars continued to shine, steady and untouched by everything below. For the first time in a long time, Ariana felt like she could breathe, like the weight pressing against her chest had finally loosened. The quiet settled around them, calm but fragile, as if it could break at any moment.

Then the ground beneath them shifted. Not violently, and not suddenly, but just enough to snap the stillness apart. Ariana’s breath caught as the air changed again, the cold sharpening as it pressed deeper into her lungs. The silence returned instantly, heavier than before, like something had taken hold of the mountain itself.

Kael was already on his feet. "This isn’t over," he said. Ariana turned toward the darkness ahead, her heart beginning to race again as something unseen moved beyond their sight. Because this time, the mountain wasn’t waiting anymore. It was responding, and something inside it had just woken up.
