Chapter 1

The first sign that something was wrong was the smell of blood. It spread through the house, sharp and metallic, thick enough to settle in Ariana’s throat the moment she stepped inside. She stopped halfway down the hallway, the glass of water in her hand trembling slightly as unease crept down her spine. Only seconds ago, the television had been playing in the living room. Now there was nothing. No sound. No movement. Just silence wrapped tightly around that smell.

"Mom?" she called, her voice quieter than she intended. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

No answer came. Her fingers tightened around the glass as her heartbeat picked up, uneven and too loud in her ears. It was past midnight, and her mother was always awake at this hour, sitting on the old sofa with a blanket over her legs, waiting for her. She always waited. Always asked if Ariana had eaten. Always reminded her to lock the windows. But tonight, the house felt wrong. Too still. Too quiet. Like something had already happened.

Ariana set the glass down carefully and stepped forward. The wooden floor creaked beneath her bare feet, the sound echoing through the silence in a way that made her chest tighten. "Mom?" she called again, more urgently now, her breath catching as she listened. Still nothing. That was when she noticed the front door slightly open, and panic hit instantly. Her mother never left the door open. Never. Cold air slipped inside, carrying the scent of wet earth, pine, and something darker.

Then she saw it. Blood. At first, just a drop. Then another. Then a smear dragged across the floor, leading toward the kitchen. Her breath caught as her mind struggled to process it. "No," she whispered, shaking her head. "No... no, no." The words came faster now, panic breaking through as she stumbled forward. "Mom!" A loud crash exploded from outside, cutting her off.

Ariana spun as heavy footsteps pounded across the porch. More than one. Several. Her body went rigid as deep male voices echoed through the house, cold and controlled. "She’s inside." "Take her alive." "If she resists, break her first." Her stomach dropped so suddenly it made her dizzy. Take her? Her? The front door burst open with a violent bang as three men stepped inside, broad-shouldered and dressed in black, rain dripping from their jackets onto the floor.

Their faces were hard, but it was their eyes that made Ariana freeze. They glowed faintly in the darkness, unnatural enough to make her chest tighten. These men were not human. She stepped back quickly, nearly slipping as fear rose fast and sharp. "Who are you?" she demanded, her voice shaking despite her effort to steady it. "Where’s my mother?" The man in front smiled slowly, cold and predatory. "She ran," he said. Fear hit her instantly. "You’re lying."

"Am I?" He tilted his head, watching her closely. "Your mother has been running for years." The second man inhaled deeply, his expression darkening. "It’s her." The first nodded. "Yes. The blood is stronger than we expected." Ariana backed into the counter, gripping it behind her. "I don’t know what you’re talking about." "You will," he said calmly. "You’re Ariana Sinclair, aren’t you?" She stayed silent as he stepped closer. "The last living descendant of the Fifth Blood."

The words hit her hard, something inside her tightening painfully. "No," she said weakly. "I don’t know what that means." The third man laughed. "She really doesn’t know." "She knows enough," the first replied. "Fear wakes blood. Pain awakens power." Ariana’s heart pounded as her mother’s warnings rushed back, louder now, urgent. Never stay out too late. Never tell anyone where we live. If I tell you to run, you run. She had thought it was paranoia. Now she understood. These men were hunters. And she was the target.

"What do you want from me?" she asked, her voice unsteady. "Your blood," the man answered. The second lunged without warning. Ariana twisted just in time as his hand slammed into the counter where her throat had been, cracking the wood. Panic took over. She ran, but another man blocked her path. The third grabbed her arm, his grip crushing as pain shot through her body. She fought, kicking and clawing, but it was useless. He slammed her into the wall, and her breath broke. "Please!" she gasped. "I don’t know anything!"

The first man stepped closer, reaching for her throat. Then the air turned cold. Frost spread across the windows. The lights flickered and shattered as a pressure built inside her chest, rising fast and burning through her veins. The floor shook, plates crashing as wind tore through the house. The man holding her cried out as Ariana looked down, her breath catching at the silver light glowing beneath her skin. Her veins shimmered. "No..." the first man whispered. "It’s awakening."

Ariana stared at her hands as the power surged again, stronger now, impossible to ignore. "I didn’t do this," she said, but she knew it wasn’t true. Something inside her had just awakened. The house trembled as the men stepped back, and then a wolf’s howl cut through the night, followed by another and another. The hunters froze. A massive shadow filled the doorway as golden eyes locked onto Ariana. The wolf stepped forward and shifted, and in its place stood a man, tall and controlled, rain clinging to his dark hair as power radiated from him.

His gaze dropped to her glowing wrist, then lifted to her face. Shock flashed across his expression before something darker replaced it. The room went completely still as even the hunters stepped back. His eyes locked on her, steady and unyielding. "The Fifth Blood," he said quietly. Then his voice lowered, deeper, certain. "My mate."
