The mountains were quiet.

For the first time since the battle began, the sound of war was gone. No explosions, no roars tearing through the sky. Only the wind moved across the peaks, steady and cold, carrying the fading heat of battle with it.

Above the mountain, the royal dragons continued to circle.

Their movements were slower now, controlled, no longer driven by urgency. Some had already settled along the cliffs, their massive bodies still but alert, watching everything around them. Even in silence, they felt like a force that could move at any moment.

Ariana stood near the edge of the cliff, her gaze fixed on the sky.

The silence should have felt peaceful, but it didn’t. Not completely. Her body still felt heavy, and every breath reminded her how much power she had used.

Kael watched her for a moment before speaking. "You should sit."

Ariana shook her head lightly. "I’m fine."

"You almost collapsed a few minutes ago."

"That was a few minutes ago."

Kael crossed his arms, clearly unconvinced. "That’s not how recovery works."

Ariana gave him a small look. "You sound like a healer."

Kael smirked. "I have hidden talents."

That almost made her smile, but it didn’t last.

Her attention drifted back to the sky, to the dragons still circling above them, still watching, still guarding. Something about it made her chest tighten, like the calm was only temporary.

"So what happens now?" she asked quietly.

Kael followed her gaze before answering. "Now we wait for the next problem."

Ariana exhaled slowly. "That’s not very comforting."

A deep voice echoed behind them.

"The world is already changing."

Ariana turned.

The Dragon King stood a short distance away, his massive form casting a long shadow across the stone. Even standing still, his presence filled the space, steady and impossible to ignore.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

"The Sovereign has returned," he said, his gaze lifting toward the sky. "That truth cannot be hidden."

Ariana felt the weight of those words settle in her chest.

"So the other bloodlines will know."

"Yes."

Kael let out a quiet breath. "That means trouble."

The Dragon King nodded. "Some will come seeking alliance. Others will come seeking control."

Ariana frowned slightly. "Control?"

"Power like yours makes people nervous," Kael said before the dragon could answer.

Ariana looked down at her hands.

The golden light was gone, hidden beneath her skin again, but she could still feel it. It hadn’t disappeared. It was there, quiet, waiting.

"I’m still learning," she said.

"And yet you already changed the battlefield," the Dragon King replied.

Ariana didn’t answer. She didn’t know how to respond to that yet.

Then something shifted.

One of the dragons above released a sharp, warning call.

Kael’s head snapped up instantly. "That’s not good."

Ariana followed his gaze toward the horizon.

More dragons reacted, their movements tightening as they turned toward the same direction. The air changed again, but this time it wasn’t the Abyss.

It felt different.

"What is that?" she asked quietly.

"Visitors," the Dragon King said.

Kael tilted his head slightly. "Already?"

Small shapes appeared in the distance, moving quickly through the sky. They didn’t move like beasts. Their motion was controlled, deliberate.

As they drew closer, Ariana’s breath slowed.

"They’re not Abyss."

"No," the Dragon King said. "Another bloodline."

The figures descended smoothly, landing across the mountain with quiet precision.

There was no chaos in their arrival. No wasted movement. Their cloaks shifted softly behind them, and their eyes glowed faintly even in daylight.

Kael exhaled. "Vampires."

One of them stepped forward.

Tall. Composed. Controlled in every movement. His presence wasn’t overwhelming like the Abyss, but it carried a quiet danger that settled into the air around him.

Ariana recognized him immediately.

"Cassian."

The vampire lord inclined his head slightly. "Lady Sovereign."

Kael crossed his arms. "That’s new."

Cassian allowed a faint smile. "The situation has changed."

Ariana stepped forward, her expression sharpening. "What do you want?"

"To talk."

Kael let out a short laugh. "That usually means trouble."

Cassian ignored him.

"The council already knows what happened here."

Ariana’s chest tightened. "That was fast."

"Power like yours cannot remain hidden," Cassian said calmly.

Ariana folded her arms. "So they sent you."

"I came on my own."

Kael raised an eyebrow. "That’s worse."

Cassian’s gaze flicked toward him briefly before returning to Ariana.

"I came with a warning."

Ariana’s expression hardened. "What kind of warning?"

"The council is dividing."

Ariana blinked. "Dividing?"

"Yes. Some believe you should be protected."

Kael nodded once. "Smart."

"Others believe you should be controlled."

Ariana’s stomach tightened. "And the rest?"

Cassian’s voice lowered slightly.

"They want you dead."

Silence fell across the mountain.

Even the dragons seemed to go still.

Kael stepped closer to Ariana without thinking, his presence shifting immediately into something protective.

"That’s not happening."

Cassian studied him for a moment. "Your loyalty is clear."

Kael shrugged. "I’m simple like that."

Ariana didn’t look away from Cassian. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because what happens next will decide everything."

Clouds began to gather slowly above the mountains, darker now, heavier than before.

"The council will not wait," Cassian continued. "They will come for you."

Ariana held his gaze, steady despite the tension building in her chest.

"Let them."

Kael smirked slightly. "Yeah. That usually doesn’t end well for them."

Cassian gave a small nod. "I hope so."

He stepped back.

The vampires behind him rose into the air, their movements smooth as shadows as they disappeared into the clouds.

Before leaving, Cassian looked back one last time.

"Prepare yourself, Sovereign."

Then they were gone. The sky grew quiet again. But it didn’t feel the same.

Ariana stood still, staring at the horizon. "The world really is changing."

Kael stepped beside her. "Good."

She glanced at him. "You’re enjoying this."

Kael smiled faintly. "I like interesting problems."

Ariana looked back at the mountains.

The dragons remained in place, watching, guarding, waiting. But now there was something else in the air.

Expectation. Beyond the mountains, the clouds continued to gather, spreading slowly across the horizon.

And somewhere in the distance, something had already begun moving.
