The air grew colder as they moved higher along the mountain path, and it became impossible to ignore. Ariana pulled her coat tighter around herself, but the wind still slipped through, sharp enough to sting with every breath. The narrow path stretched ahead, uneven and steep, forcing her to stay focused on each step. One mistake here would not be forgiven.

Kael walked a few steps ahead, steady and unaffected, as if the cold didn’t touch him at all. His pace remained even, his attention fixed forward. "This place already feels like a bad idea," he said. Ariana exhaled softly. "It is."

"At least you admit it," he replied. They continued in silence after that, the mountain pressing in around them. The higher they climbed, the narrower the path became, and the drop beside them disappeared into thick, endless fog. There was no way to tell how far it went.

Ariana glanced down once, and her stomach twisted immediately. She pulled her gaze back up, steadying her breath. "Don’t look down," Kael said without turning. "I already did," she muttered. "Then don’t do it again."

She shook her head slightly, but a faint smile touched her lips. "Very helpful." Kael didn’t answer, though she caught the edge of a smirk. The moment passed quickly as something around them began to change.

The wind faded first, slowly losing its edge until it disappeared completely. Then the distant sounds vanished one by one until there was nothing left but silence. Even their footsteps softened, like the mountain itself was swallowing the noise. Ariana slowed, her instincts tightening.

"Something’s wrong," she said quietly. Kael stopped immediately, scanning the path ahead and the empty space around them. "There’s no sound at all." Ariana nodded once. "It’s too quiet."

Kael stepped closer without hesitation. "Stay near me." Ariana shifted beside him until their shoulders nearly touched. The bond between them pulsed, warm and steady, grounding her against the unnatural stillness. For a moment, that was the only thing that felt real.

Then the ground shifted.

It was subtle, just enough to make her tense. Ariana’s eyes moved forward, and her chest tightened. The path had changed. It curved slightly now, even though they hadn’t turned.

"We didn’t move like that," she said. Kael’s expression hardened. "This place is changing around us." Ariana swallowed. "A trial."

"I don’t like this trial," Kael muttered. The fog below them began to rise, slow and quiet at first. It brushed against their boots, then climbed higher, wrapping around their legs. Ariana watched it carefully, her instincts sharpening.

"This isn’t normal fog," she said. Kael nodded. "Nothing here is." The fog continued rising until it surrounded them completely, swallowing the path and everything beyond it. The world disappeared into white.

Then it started to move.

Not with the wind, not randomly, but with purpose. Ariana felt it instantly, something unseen shifting within it. Her heartbeat picked up as shapes began to form, faint at first, then clearer. The figures stood in front of them, silent and still.

She took a step back. "Do you see that?" "Yeah," Kael said, his voice calm but alert. One of the figures stepped forward, and Ariana froze. "...Mom?"

The woman looked exactly the same. The same face, the same eyes, the same quiet expression Ariana remembered. "Ariana," she said softly. "Come here."

The sound of her voice hit harder than anything else. Ariana’s chest tightened painfully as something deep inside her responded. She stepped forward without thinking. Then Kael caught her wrist.

"Stop."

Ariana blinked, her thoughts snapping back. "But she..." "That’s not her," Kael said firmly. Ariana hesitated, her eyes returning to the woman. "It looks real."

"That’s the point," he replied.

The woman’s voice softened again. "Why are you listening to him?" she asked. "I’m right here." The pull was stronger this time, sharper, almost painful. Ariana felt herself leaning forward again.

Then Kael spoke. "Look at her eyes."

Ariana forced herself to focus. Everything was perfect. Except that. The eyes were empty. There was nothing behind them.

She stepped back slowly. "That’s not her."

The change was instant. The softness disappeared, replaced by something cold and sharp. "You were supposed to fall for that," it said. The voice twisted, no longer human.

More figures formed around them, some familiar, some not. Ariana’s heart pounded harder. "This is a test." "Yeah," Kael said. "And it’s getting worse."

The figures moved.

At first slow, then suddenly fast. They rushed forward all at once. Ariana reacted without hesitation.

Golden light burst outward.

The fog recoiled as the light spread, forcing the figures to freeze mid-motion. Their forms twisted, breaking under the pressure. Kael stepped beside her, his eyes glowing. "Stay with me."

Ariana shook her head slightly. "No. Together." A faint smile crossed his face. "Better."

The bond between them surged again, stronger than before. Ariana steadied her breathing, focusing instead of reacting. This time, the power didn’t fight her. It listened.

The golden light expanded again, controlled and precise. One by one, the figures dissolved. The fog pulled back, retreating as if it had never been there.

Silence broke.

The path returned beneath their feet, solid and real. Ariana let out a slow breath, her chest still tight from the strain. "That was difficult." Kael exhaled. "And annoying."

A quiet laugh slipped from her, lighter this time. It didn’t last long, but it helped. When she looked ahead again, something had changed.

The fog shifted, not hiding anything now, but revealing it.

A structure stood at the end of the path, massive and ancient, carved from dark stone. It didn’t look ruined. It looked waiting.

Kael stopped. "That looks important." Ariana nodded slowly. "That’s where we’re going."

The air grew heavier again, focused instead of threatening. This time, it felt deliberate, like something inside was aware of them. Ariana drew in a breath.

"Are you ready?"

Kael glanced at her. "No."

Then he smirked. "But I’m going anyway."

Ariana smiled faintly. "Same."

They looked at the structure one last time, then at each other. The bond between them pulsed, steady and certain. They stepped forward together, and this time, nothing stopped them. The structure stood silent as they approached, ancient and unmoving, its presence pressing quietly against the air. But the moment Ariana stepped closer, something deep within it stirred. Not the stone. Not the ground. Something else woke up.

A voice followed, soft and familiar, slipping through the silence like it had always been there. "...Ariana." She froze, her breath catching as the sound settled into her chest. Because this time, there was no distortion, no emptiness behind it. It didn’t feel like a trick. It felt real.
