Chapter 33
The battlefield slowly grew quiet as the last of the Abyss beasts disappeared into the dark clouds. Smoke drifted across the mountains, carried by a light wind that no longer smelled as strongly of burning and blood. The sky, which had been filled with fire and chaos moments ago, now glowed with a soft golden light. It felt almost unreal after everything that had happened.
High above the mountain, royal dragons circled in wide, steady arcs. Their wings moved slower now, no longer rushing into battle or diving toward enemies. Some flew in silence, while others released low, steady roars that echoed across the mountains. The sound was no longer filled with anger, but with something closer to relief.
Ariana stood at the edge of the cliff, her body still recovering from the strain of using so much power. Her legs felt unsteady, and if Kael had not been beside her, she would not have remained standing. His arm stayed firmly around her, steady and quiet, supporting her without drawing attention. She leaned into him just slightly, more than she meant to.
Below them, the mountains were scarred from the battle. Large sections of stone had collapsed, and the ground was burned black in several places. Deep cracks ran across the terrain where dragons and Abyss creatures had collided. It looked broken, like the world itself had been torn apart and forced back together.
But the dragons were alive.
Many of the ones that had fallen earlier were now back in the sky, flying as if they had never been struck down. Ariana watched them in silence, her chest tightening as the truth settled in. They had died. She had felt it when their presence disappeared. Now they were back, and she was the reason.
Relief came first.
Then something heavier followed.
"I can’t believe that worked," she said quietly.
Kael followed her gaze, watching the dragons circle above them. "Well," he said, calm as ever, "you did just bring back half a dragon army." Ariana let out a soft breath, almost laughing despite everything. "That sounds insane when you say it like that."
"It was insane," Kael replied, a faint smirk forming, but his grip on her arm tightened just slightly.
Behind them, Vormerion stepped forward, his massive presence filling the space around them. His bronze scales reflected the golden light as he spread his wings slightly, sending a soft gust across the cliff. The dragons in the sky reacted immediately. Several turned mid-flight and began moving toward the mountain.
"They’re coming here," Ariana said.
"They feel the Sovereign," Vormerion answered.
Within moments, the sky above the cliff filled with wings again, but this time there was no chaos. Dozens of royal dragons descended, landing across the rocky slopes and nearby peaks. Some hovered in place while others settled into stillness, their movements controlled and deliberate. One by one, golden eyes turned toward Ariana.
Every dragon was watching her.
Ariana shifted slightly, her confidence faltering under the weight of their attention. Her fingers tightened unconsciously against Kael’s sleeve. "This is... a little intimidating," she admitted.
Kael glanced around, completely unfazed. "I think they like you."
Before she could respond, one of the largest dragons stepped forward. Its scales shone bright gold beneath the light, and Ariana recognized it immediately. The Dragon King approached slowly, his presence commanding without needing to show force.
Then he lowered his head.
And bowed.
A deep rumble spread through the mountains as the other dragons followed. One by one, dozens of dragons lowered their heads at the same time. The ground trembled beneath their weight as they bowed to her.
Ariana froze.
"They’re... bowing," she said softly, her voice almost uncertain.
Kael folded his arms, watching calmly. "Looks like you’re in charge now."
Ariana shook her head immediately. "I’m not a queen."
The Dragon King lifted his head slightly, his massive eyes locking onto hers. His voice echoed across the mountains, deep and steady. "You are the Sovereign."
The wind moved gently across the cliff as the dragons remained still, waiting. Ariana looked at them again, her chest tightening in a different way this time. These were not just powerful creatures. These were lives. Lives that had already been lost once.
And she had brought them back.
"I don’t know how to lead dragons," she admitted quietly.
"You already have," the Dragon King replied.
Ariana looked back at him. "You mean the battle."
"Yes."
His gaze softened slightly. "You restored the royal legion."
Kael nodded beside her. "That was pretty impressive." Ariana rubbed her arm, still feeling the weakness in her body. "I almost collapsed." Kael shrugged lightly. "Small detail."
She glanced at him, but this time she noticed something else. He had not let go of her yet.
The dragons slowly lifted their heads again, but none of them looked away. The sky above remained calm, yet the tension from the battle lingered. It felt like something unfinished was waiting just beyond the horizon.
The Dragon King turned his gaze toward the distant mountains.
"Augustus will return."
Ariana nodded slowly. "I know."
Kael followed his gaze. "Yeah. He didn’t look like someone who gives up."
"The Abyss has waited thousands of years for this war," the Dragon King continued.
Ariana felt a cold weight settle in her chest. The victory around her suddenly felt smaller, thinner than before. "Then this was only the beginning."
"Yes," Vormerion said.
The wind picked up slightly as the dragons shifted across the mountains. Their movements were subtle, but there was purpose behind them now. They were not resting.
They were preparing.
Kael stretched his arms lightly. "Then we need a plan."
Ariana looked back toward the sky. The dragons were still circling, no longer fighting, just watching and guarding. For a moment, everything looked peaceful.
But she knew better now.
"Do you think the other bloodlines know about this?" she asked.
Kael raised an eyebrow. "You lit up the sky like a second sun." He shrugged. "I think everyone noticed."
Ariana let out a soft breath. "That’s not very comforting."
Kael smiled slightly. "Relax."
He gestured toward the dragons surrounding them. "You’ve got an army now."
Ariana followed his gaze. Dozens of royal dragons stood across the mountains, their attention divided between her and the horizon. They were not guarding the land.
They were guarding her.
The Dragon King lifted his wings again, his voice carrying across the cliff. "The world will soon hear that the Sovereign has returned."
Ariana looked up at him. "And when they do?"
His eyes burned with quiet understanding. "Some will come to serve you."
His voice lowered slightly.
"Others will come to challenge you."
Kael cracked his neck. "Good." 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Ariana glanced at him. "You enjoy this too much."
Kael grinned. "I like interesting problems."
Ariana shook her head, but this time she did not argue. Instead, she looked out across the mountains again. Somewhere beyond the horizon, the Abyss was already recovering.
Augustus had promised he would return.
And next time, she might not be strong enough to stop him.
Far beyond the mountains, deep within the Abyss, Augustus stood in a vast hall of black stone and shifting shadows. The darkness around him moved slowly, like something alive and breathing. Shadow creatures surrounded him, their forms unstable, their silver eyes glowing faintly in the void.
He looked upward, as if he could see through the world itself.
"The Sovereign has awakened," he said.
One of the creatures stepped forward and bowed. "What are your orders, Lord Augustus?"
Augustus smiled slowly, calm once more.
"Prepare the next phase."
The shadows stirred around him, reacting to his voice.
"This war has only begun."
His gaze darkened slightly.
"And this time..."
The darkness deepened.
"...we will not hold back."
Far away, beneath the golden sky, Ariana stood surrounded by dragons, unaware that something far worse than Augustus had already begun to move.
