Chapter 43
The structure stood silent in front of them, its tall stone walls rising into the cold sky. Ancient markings covered every surface, faintly glowing under the dim light. The carvings looked older than anything Ariana had ever seen, and when she stared too long, they almost seemed to shift. The entrance stretched wide and dark, like something waiting.
Ariana slowed as they approached, her steps growing more careful. The closer she got, the tighter her chest felt, not fear, but something deeper she couldn’t explain. It pulled at her, steady and persistent. "This place feels different," she said quietly.
Kael studied the structure, his expression sharp. "It feels like it’s watching us." Ariana let out a small breath. "That’s not comforting." Kael glanced at her briefly. "It’s not supposed to be."
They stopped just before the entrance. The wind that followed them across the mountain had disappeared, leaving behind a silence that felt unnatural. Even the air felt heavier, like the world had paused. Ariana looked at the doorway, then back at Kael.
"We go in together."
Kael frowned slightly. "Of course." Ariana hesitated, her voice softer. "But if something happens..." Kael stepped closer immediately. "We stay together."
She held his gaze. "You can’t promise that." Kael didn’t look away. "I can try."
The bond between them pulsed again, stronger than before. It felt steady, but there was tension beneath it now, like something was about to pull it apart. Ariana exhaled slowly. "You always say that."
"Say what?" Kael asked.
"That you’ll stay."
Kael didn’t hesitate. "Because I will."
The certainty in his voice made her chest tighten. "You don’t know what’s inside." Kael gave a small shrug. "I don’t need to." Ariana shook her head softly. "You’re impossible."
A faint smirk crossed his face. "You like that."
Ariana blinked and looked away. "I didn’t say that." Kael stepped slightly closer. "You didn’t need to." A faint smile slipped through before she could stop it.
"You’re very confident," she said. Kael’s voice lowered. "Only about a few things." Ariana met his eyes again. "Like what?"
"Like you."
The words landed harder than she expected. Ariana froze for a second, her heartbeat suddenly louder in her ears. "Kael..." she started.
He didn’t move away. "I meant what I said before. I’m not here because of the bond." Ariana’s voice softened. "Then why are you here?"
Kael held her gaze. "Because I want to be."
Something shifted inside her. Warm. Steady. Real. The bond reacted instantly, tightening between them like it had already made a decision.
"You shouldn’t say things like that right before we go into something dangerous," she whispered.
Kael raised an eyebrow. "Why not?"
"Because it makes it harder to think."
"Good."
A quiet laugh slipped from her, softer this time. "You really are impossible." Kael leaned slightly closer. "And you’re still here."
Ariana didn’t move. Neither did he. The space between them closed slowly, naturally, like neither of them was trying to stop it anymore.
"You’re distracting me," she said quietly.
"That was the plan."
Her eyes flickered to his lips for just a second, then back to his eyes. Her breath caught, and the world seemed to fade around them. Just one step closer.
That was all it would take.
Then the mountain answered.
A sharp sound cut through the silence, breaking everything in an instant. Kael stepped back immediately, his body shifting into alert readiness. The ground beneath them trembled, low and heavy.
A deep sound echoed from inside the structure, ancient and alive. Ariana felt it immediately as the air changed again, colder and heavier than before. Something inside had woken up.
Kael’s expression hardened. "That’s not good." Ariana nodded slowly. "No. It’s not."
The entrance began to glow. Symbols lit up across the stone, spreading outward like fire through dry wood. The ground cracked slightly beneath their feet as the light intensified.
Then a voice echoed from within, low and ancient, its weight pressing into the air like something that had existed long before them. It didn’t rise or fall. It remained steady, cold, and absolute.
Unyielding, it settled into the silence, leaving no space for doubt or resistance.
"Only one may enter."
The words froze everything.
Ariana’s heart dropped. "What?" Kael stepped forward instantly. "That’s not happening."
The voice spoke again, unchanged. "If both enter, both will fall."
Silence followed.
Ariana looked at Kael. "This is part of the trial." Kael shook his head. "I don’t care." Ariana stepped closer. "Kael."
"No."
His voice didn’t waver. "We go together."
"You heard it."
"I don’t trust it."
Her expression softened. "But I do."
Kael’s jaw tightened. "That’s worse."
Ariana reached for his hand, holding it before he could pull away. "It’s my trial," she said quietly. Kael looked at her. "And I’m part of it."
"Not this part."
The bond pulsed again, stronger, but strained now. It felt like something was trying to pull it apart. Kael’s voice lowered. "I’m not leaving you alone."
Ariana’s eyes softened. "You’re not leaving. You’re trusting me."
He didn’t answer right away. He just looked at her, like he was memorizing her. Finally, he exhaled slowly. "I don’t like this."
"I know."
The light from the entrance grew stronger. It felt like it was calling her now. Ariana slowly let go of his hand, and the moment felt heavier than she expected.
She stepped forward. Then stopped. She turned back.
Kael was still there, watching her. Not stopping her, but not okay with it either. Ariana stepped back toward him just enough to close the distance.
"When I come back..." she said softly.
Kael met her gaze. "Yeah?"
Ariana held his eyes. "We finish that."
For a second, he didn’t respond. Then a small smile appeared.
"Good."
Ariana took a breath. Then she turned.
This time, she didn’t hesitate. She stepped into the structure.
The light swallowed her instantly. It closed around her, bright and absolute, until she disappeared completely. The door sealed behind her, the glow fading into silence.
Kael Vaughn stood alone.
For the first time since he met her,
he couldn’t feel her.
And that terrified him more than anything.
The bond wasn’t gone. It was still there.
But something was blocking it.
Kael felt it immediately, like reaching for something that should be within his grasp and finding a wall instead. The connection didn’t respond. It didn’t move. It just... stopped. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
His chest tightened as he tried again, focusing harder this time, searching for even the faintest trace of her presence.
Nothing answered.
The silence around him shifted, heavier now, pressing against his instincts in a way that made his wolf restless. This wasn’t distance. This wasn’t weakness.
This was separation.
Kael took a slow step toward the entrance, his gaze fixed on the sealed stone. "Ariana," he called, his voice low but firm, expecting something in return.
Nothing came back. The structure stood silent, unmoved, as if it had swallowed her whole.
Kael’s jaw tightened. His fingers curled slightly at his sides as his control slipped just enough for his power to stir beneath the surface.
"You better come back," he said quietly.
Because if she didn’t, he was going in after her.
