Ariana felt it before she understood what was happening. A sudden pressure closed around her chest without warning, tight enough to steal the air from her lungs and leave her frozen where she stood. The golden light beneath her skin flickered sharply, not fading but shifting, as something deeper moved beneath it. She froze, her breath catching painfully as the energy inside her changed in a way she did not recognize. It did not weaken or break apart. It stayed steady, but it no longer felt entirely hers, and that realization made something cold settle in her chest.

The presence above her shifted in response. It did not move closer, but its attention narrowed, and the pressure in the air grew heavier, like it had fixed on her completely. Ariana felt something inside her slip out of place, not painfully, but enough that she could not ignore it. It felt wrong in a way she could not explain, like something that had always answered her had suddenly stopped listening.

Far away, Kael felt it at the same moment. The bond did not fade. It tightened.

The force of it hit him all at once, sharp and violent, like something had been torn out of his chest without warning. His breath left him instantly, and his vision blurred as his body lurched forward. He caught himself with one hand against the ground before he could fall, his chest tightening as he tried to breathe through the shock. "Ariana," he said, his voice rough and unsteady, the word catching in his throat.

The space in front of him twisted again. The same unstable distortion that had swallowed her flickered like a broken reflection, appearing and disappearing as if it might collapse at any moment. Kael forced himself upright, his chest still tight as he struggled to steady his breathing. The bond flickered faintly inside him, still there but stretched thin, like something on the other side was pulling it away from him. This was not distance. Something had reached her first, and that realization hit harder than anything else.

He stepped forward without thinking. The moment his foot crossed into the distortion, the world pushed back. Pressure hit him from all sides, heavy and suffocating, forcing the air out of his lungs and slowing him down. It felt like the space itself did not want him there, like it was trying to keep him away from her.

Kael clenched his jaw and kept moving.

Power rose under his skin as the storm inside him answered. Lightning spread along his arm, then climbed across his shoulder and down his back, sharp and unstable. It reacted to everything he was holding on to, to the broken bond, to the one thing he refused to lose. Ariana...

He stepped forward again, forcing his body through the resistance. The pressure doubled instantly. The ground beneath his feet cracked, and the distortion bent around him, shifting and warping like it was trying to push him out. For a moment, it felt like he might not make it through, like the space would collapse before he reached her. Kael pushed harder. He did not stop. The distortion shifted again, unstable but opening just enough. Kael stepped through.

Ariana felt him before she saw him. The bond flared suddenly, stronger than it had been since she arrived in that place. Warmth spread through her chest, cutting through the pressure around her and grounding her in a way nothing else had managed. It hit so suddenly it almost made her unsteady.

But beneath the warmth, something sharper moved through the bond for just a second, quick enough that Ariana almost thought she imagined it. It didn’t feel wrong exactly, but it didn’t feel familiar either, and that brief difference made her chest tighten before it disappeared, leaving only Kael and the steadiness of his presence.

Her breath caught. "Kael."

She turned quickly as the distortion behind her cracked open and he stepped through it. For a moment, everything else seemed to fall away. Kael stood there, breathing hard, his eyes fixed on her like nothing else mattered. Relief hit her so suddenly it almost hurt, her chest tightening with it. "You are here," she said, her voice unsteady, softer than she meant it to be.

"I told you," he replied, his tone firm despite the strain in his breathing. "You are not getting rid of me that easily." Even now, his presence steadied her, pulling her back just enough to think.

Ariana took a step toward him. The space reacted immediately. The ground beneath her feet shifted sharply, and a bright line of light rose between them, cutting across the space like a barrier. She stopped at once, her body going still as the air between them tightened, pressing against her like a warning.

Kael saw it immediately. "Do not move."

Ariana shook her head. "No." The line pulsed brighter as the pressure increased, and the space felt like it was closing in, focusing entirely on the distance between them. This place did not want them close. "I cannot cross," Kael said, his voice tight.

Ariana swallowed. "Neither can I."

The bond flickered between them, still there, but strained, thinner than it should have been. Behind her, the figure spoke quietly. "It was always going to resist this."

Ariana did not turn. "I am not letting it."

Kael stepped forward anyway. The ground beneath him cracked again, deeper this time, and the pressure pushed harder against him, but he ignored it. "What is this place doing?" he asked.

Ariana shook her head. "It is not just a test." The space trembled again, and this time something deeper moved beneath it. Ariana felt it immediately. The presence was closer now, watching in a way that made her chest tighten.

Kael felt it too. His body went still for a moment, his gaze lifting slightly, tension tightening through him.

"That is not normal," he said.

"I know." The glowing lines beneath Ariana spread wider, crawling across the ground in uneven patterns. The space no longer felt stable. It felt like it was shifting around them, like it was adjusting to something they couldn’t see.

Kael looked back at her. "You need to come with me." Ariana wanted to. Every part of her wanted to close the distance between them, to step through whatever was holding them apart. But she could not.

"I cannot."

Kael’s jaw tightened. "Yes, you can."

"It is not letting me."

"Then we make it."

Lightning surged across his arm again, stronger this time. This time the storm around him didn’t feel entirely controlled. Ariana felt it through the bond before she understood it, a rough edge beneath the power, like something in him was being pushed harder than it should have been. Kael kept moving as if he hadn’t noticed, but the strain stayed with her, sharp and clear.

He took another step. Ariana moved too. Pain shot through her chest the moment she stepped closer to the barrier, sharp enough to make her gasp, but she did not stop. The space reacted violently. The ground split beneath her feet as the glowing lines brightened and spread faster.

But she kept moving. The distance between them shrank. Kael reached forward. Ariana reached back.

Their hands moved closer, slow but certain. The bond surged between them, strong and real, stronger than anything she had felt before. For a moment, nothing else mattered.

Then the space snapped.

"What is that?" he asked.

Ariana’s voice dropped. "It’s the one that answered me." Kael’s expression hardened instantly. "That’s not happening." Ariana let out a weak breath. "I already tried to stop it."

The energy inside her moved again, pulling harder this time. Her body leaned forward before she forced herself to stop, her muscles locking as she fought it. Kael saw it immediately. "What is it doing?" he asked.

"I’m not letting this take you."

Ariana’s chest tightened painfully. "You might not have a choice."

"I always have a choice." The bond flared again, stronger this time, almost desperate. The space reacted violently, and the barrier between them flickered. For a moment, it weakened. Kael moved immediately, closing the distance. Ariana reached for him, her hand extending toward his, and their hands came close, close enough that she could feel the warmth from his skin. She did. That was the only thing keeping her steady. "I’m here," he said.

The bond answered, strong and real. But something else answered too, something deeper, something that did not belong to either of them. Ariana’s chest tightened. "I can’t hold it," she whispered. Kael shook his head. "Yes, you can."

But she wasn’t sure anymore. The ground beneath her broke open as light and darkness collided around her. The presence above moved closer, and this time, it reached back. Ariana felt it clearly. It wasn’t waiting anymore.

It was taking.

It felt thin and fragile, like it could slip at any moment. The golden light flickered, and beneath it, something deeper moved toward the darkness above.

Ariana froze, because this time it didn’t feel like it was listening to her. It felt like it was listening to something else. Something that had already chosen her.

Kael took another step forward, ignoring everything. "Ariana, stay with me."

She tried. She really tried. But the pull inside her only grew stronger, deeper, harder to resist with every second. The presence above shifted again, closer now, as if it was waiting for her to stop resisting. Ariana lifted her chin slowly. "I’m not yours!" she said. Her voice was stronger now, sharper.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then something inside her moved in response.

Her breath caught as the golden light flickered again, and beneath it, something deeper leaned toward the darkness above. Ariana’s eyes widened, fear finally breaking through.

And for the first time, she didn’t know if Kael would be enough to pull her back.
