The tunnel stretched deep into the mountain as Kael walked ahead, holding a torch he had taken from the palace wall. The flame flickered against the rough stone, casting long shadows that shifted along the walls with every step. Behind them, the distant sounds of battle still echoed faintly. Somewhere far above, a dragon roared. The sound was far away now, but it still made Ariana’s chest tighten. She slowed without realizing it.

Kael noticed immediately. "You’re thinking about them." Ariana glanced back into the darkness behind them, her voice quieter than before. "They’re still fighting." Kael didn’t deny it. "Yeah." She wrapped her arms around herself, her fingers tightening slightly. "We just left them there." Kael stopped and turned toward her. His voice wasn’t harsh, but it carried quiet certainty. "They told us to leave." She shook her head faintly. "That doesn’t make it easier." "No," he admitted. "It doesn’t."

For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence in the tunnel felt heavier than the chaos they had left behind, pressing in from all sides. Then Kael turned and continued forward. "Come on. We can’t stop now." Ariana nodded, forcing her legs to move again, even though part of her still felt like she had left something important behind.

The deeper they went, the colder the air became. At first, the walls looked like nothing more than rough stone, but slowly, subtle markings began to appear. What had seemed natural at a distance became clearer the closer they got. They weren’t random. They were carved. Ariana ran her fingers lightly along one of them as she walked. "These weren’t made recently." Kael lifted the torch closer, the firelight revealing curved lines etched into the stone. Some resembled wings, others symbols she didn’t recognize. "Definitely old," he said. "Older than the city?" she asked quietly. He shrugged. "Wouldn’t surprise me."

The tunnel curved downward, then suddenly widened. Both of them slowed as the narrow passage opened into a massive chamber. Ariana stopped completely, her breath catching. "Wow." The ceiling rose high above them, disappearing into darkness. Thick stone pillars lined the space, each carved with dragons spiraling upward as if frozen mid-flight. The place didn’t feel abandoned. It felt still. Waiting.

Ariana stepped farther inside, her footsteps softer now. Golden lines ran through the stone floor and walls, glowing faintly like veins beneath the surface. Kael noticed them too, his tone shifting slightly. "Okay... now it’s getting interesting." The lines stretched across the chamber in a wide pattern, all leading toward the same place. The center. Something stood there. A throne.

It was massive, formed from gold and dark stone, larger than anything she had ever seen. Strange symbols covered its surface, pulsing faintly with light. Ariana moved toward it slowly, each step feeling heavier than the last. The air near the throne felt different—warmer, charged. Familiar. Her heartbeat quickened. Kael followed closely behind. "You feel that?" "Yeah," she said quietly, her eyes never leaving it.

She stopped at the base of the throne. For a moment, she didn’t move. Then she lifted her hand. "Hold on—" Kael started, but it was too late. The moment her fingers touched the surface, golden light burst across the chamber. The glowing lines ignited instantly, racing outward across the floor and climbing the pillars. The carved dragons shimmered as if they were coming alive.

Ariana gasped as images flooded her mind. Endless skies filled with dragons. Mountains older than time. A woman standing at the center of it all, surrounded by golden light that spread behind her like wings. The dragons bowed—not in fear, but in loyalty. Not to a king. To her. Ariana pulled her hand back sharply, stumbling as the vision broke. Kael caught her before she fell. "Easy. What did you see?"

She took a breath, her voice unsteady. "Memories... I think." "Yours?" he asked. She shook her head slowly. "No." Her eyes drifted back to the throne. "The dragons... they weren’t following the Dragon King." Kael crossed his arms, frowning. "Then who?" Ariana hesitated, then answered quietly, "The Sovereign."

The golden light beneath the throne pulsed once, slow and steady, like a heartbeat answering her words. Far above, the distant roar of battle echoed again, shaking the chamber. Kael glanced upward. "They’re still fighting." Ariana nodded, but her focus didn’t shift. Something inside her had changed. Something that had been quiet for a long time was starting to wake.

Then a low rumble rolled through the chamber. Kael froze. "Did you hear that?" Ariana had. Stone grinding against stone.
