The chamber never truly became quiet. The tension from moments ago still hung in the air, heavy and unresolved. The golden lines across the floor cast a steady glow over the sanctuary. The light spread across the ancient stone, soft but constant, reflecting off the towering dragon statues that stood motionless around the room. They looked less like carvings now and more like silent guardians, watching everything that happened near the throne.

For a brief moment, the world felt far away. But it didn’t last. Ariana could still feel the pressure outside the mountain. It pressed faintly against her chest, like something heavy sitting just beyond reach. Even this deep underground, the war hadn’t disappeared. The mountain only muted it. It didn’t hide it.

Faint sounds reached them through the stone. Distant roars echoed like thunder rolling across the sky. There were sharp impacts too, claws striking rock, and the high, unnatural shrieks of Abyss creatures cutting through everything else.

Ariana wrapped her arms around herself without realizing it. Her fingers pressed lightly into her sleeves as she looked upward, as if she could somehow see through the layers of stone above them.

"They’re still fighting up there."

Kael stood near the tunnel entrance, his posture relaxed but his attention sharp. His eyes remained fixed on the darkness beyond the passage, like he was waiting for something to step out of it.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "They are."

Ariana lowered her gaze to the glowing floor. The light pulsed faintly beneath her feet, steady and calm, completely different from the chaos outside.

"We should help them."

Kael didn’t answer right away. He turned his head slightly, then pushed himself off the wall and walked back toward her. His steps were unhurried, but there was purpose in them.

"You will," he said. "But not yet."

Ariana frowned, frustration tightening her voice. "That’s easy for you to say."

He stopped in front of her. For a second, the edge in his expression softened, just enough to show he understood exactly what she meant.

"If you go up there right now," he said calmly, "you’ll die."

The words landed harder than she expected. She opened her mouth to argue, but nothing came out. The truth was already there, sitting heavy in her chest. She had felt it earlier. The moment her power slipped even slightly, the pressure from Augustus alone had nearly crushed her.

She wasn’t ready.

"And if you die," Kael added, "the war is over." Ariana exhaled slowly and looked away. "I hate when you make sense."

Kael’s mouth curved slightly. "I know."

Behind them, Vormerion shifted his massive wings. The movement sent a low rumble through the chamber, dust drifting from the ceiling as the ancient dragon adjusted his position. His gaze remained fixed on them, calm and watchful.

Ariana turned toward him. "You said the Sovereign was meant to protect the bloodlines."

"Yes."

"But the council tried to erase us."

The dragon’s golden eyes dimmed slightly, as if the memory itself carried weight. "Fear makes powerful people do foolish things."

Kael folded his arms. "That sounds familiar." Ariana glanced back at the throne. "So the Sovereigns ruled everything?"

"No," Vormerion said. "They guided the balance."

That word lingered. Balance.Something stirred in Ariana’s mind again. It wasn’t a full memory this time, just fragments. Dragons moving through the sky without fear. Wolves running freely across open land. Different beings standing together instead of fighting.

It felt... right.

"The world used to be different," she said quietly.

"Yes," the dragon replied. "Very different." The silence that followed wasn’t peaceful this time. It felt heavier. Like something lost that couldn’t easily be returned.

Kael leaned against one of the pillars again, though his attention hadn’t relaxed at all. "So how does she fix all that?" Vormerion’s gaze settled on Ariana. "One step at a time."

Ariana looked down at her hands. The faint golden glow beneath her skin flickered again, stronger than before but still unstable.

"Then what’s the next step?"

Before the dragon could answer, Kael suddenly went still. It was subtle, but Ariana noticed immediately.

"What?"

His eyes narrowed slightly, focusing on something she couldn’t see. "I feel something."

Ariana’s heartbeat picked up. "The Abyss?" "Yes." Kael pushed himself away from the pillar. The shift in him was immediate. His body tightened, his stance adjusting, every part of him becoming focused.

"Didn’t take long." Ariana stepped closer to him. "How many?"

He closed his eyes briefly, then opened them again. "Five." She blinked. "Only five?" Kael shook his head slightly. "Five that are confident enough to walk in here."

Vormerion’s voice echoed through the chamber. "The sanctuary hides you from most enemies. Not from the Abyss." Ariana swallowed. "So they know I’m here."

"Looks like it." She studied Kael for a second. "You’re smiling."

"I like fights I can count."

"Do not underestimate them," Vormerion warned. "I don’t," Kael said, then glanced at Ariana. "Stay behind the throne."

"I’m not hiding."

"Yes, you are."

"I just created a shield."

"And you’ve used it once."

"That still counts."

Kael let out a breath. "You’re impossible." Ariana gave a small, stubborn smile. "You’re the one who said I was royalty."

"I’m already regretting that."

Vormerion’s voice cut through the moment. "They have entered the tunnel." Kael turned toward the entrance. "How long?"

"Moments." The air in the chamber shifted. Even the golden light seemed to dim slightly, reacting to something approaching.

Ariana felt her hands tremble again. She tried to steady them, but the tension wouldn’t fade.

Kael stepped closer. "Hey."

She looked at him.

"You’re fine."

"I’m not scared." He smirked faintly. "That’s not what worries me."

"What?"

"You’re about to do something reckless."

She hesitated. "Maybe."

"I knew it." He leaned closer, voice lowering. "If things go bad, you run."

"I’m not leaving you."

"You are if I say so."

Ariana met his eyes. "You’re not my Alpha." Kael smiled slightly, but this time it didn’t reach his eyes. "No. I’m something worse."

The bond between them pulsed suddenly, warm and alive. Ariana felt it clearly, stronger than before. It wasn’t just connection anymore. It felt like trust.Then, footsteps echoed from the tunnel.

The footsteps were slow, measured, and controlled. Both of them turned at the same time. The golden light flickered.

Kael stepped in front of Ariana without thinking, his body already positioning itself between her and the entrance. His wolf surged forward, protective and ready. A figure stepped into the light.

He was tall and pale, with silver eyes that glowed faintly. Dark armor clung to his body like a second skin, shifting slightly with every movement. He smiled. "Well... looks like we found the Sovereign."

Ariana’s voice dropped. "Abyss hunters." More figures emerged behind him, moving silently into the chamber. Their presence carried a cold weight that pushed against the sanctuary’s warmth. Kael exhaled slowly. "Five. I told you."

The lead hunter tilted his head slightly as he studied Ariana. "You should have stayed hidden." His silver eyes gleamed with quiet amusement. "The Abyss Lord sends his greetings."

Kael stepped forward, his golden eyes burning brighter now. "Tell him we’re busy."

The hunter chuckled. "I’m afraid he insisted." The others spread out, surrounding the chamber with quiet precision. Dark energy filled the air, pressing against the golden light. Even the sanctuary reacted, its glow flickering under the pressure.

Vormerion’s voice echoed through the chamber. "Sovereign... this is your next lesson." Ariana swallowed. "What lesson?" The dragon’s voice deepened.

"Protection."

Kael rolled his shoulders and stepped forward, his stance shifting into something sharper, more dangerous.

"Perfect," he said quietly. "I was getting bored."

The hunters moved, and Kael surged forward to meet them without hesitation, his body already shifting into something faster and more dangerous. For a split second, Ariana stayed where she was, her instincts pulling in opposite directions. The sanctuary’s light pulsed around her, steady but uncertain, as if waiting for her to decide. Then she saw it. The way the darkness pressed toward Kael. The way the Abyss energy reached for him first, sharp and deliberate, like it had already chosen its target. "No," she whispered, and the word came out stronger than she expected. Golden light surged beneath her skin, rising faster this time, answering something inside her instead of waiting to be guided. The air around her shifted as the sanctuary reacted, its glow flaring in response. This time, she didn’t stop. She stepped forward, the light gathering with her, and the moment her power moved, the chamber seemed to breathe with it. The hunters lunged, Kael met them head-on, and Ariana followed without looking back. And the fight began.
