Chapter 16
The sky filled with wings.
Hundreds of dragons tore through the clouds above the mountain, one after another descending through the gray sky. Massive shadows swept across the hidden city, their scales flashing like dark steel beneath the fading light. Their eyes burned the same furious red, and for a moment, the entire city froze under the weight of their presence. Even the Dragon King slowly lifted his massive head, and the golden dragon beside Ariana released a low rumble that vibrated through the palace floor.
Ariana’s breath caught as she stared upward, her chest tightening painfully. It felt like the air had thinned, like there wasn’t enough of it to breathe. "How many are there?" she asked, though a part of her already knew she didn’t want the answer. The man in black and gold stepped closer to the shattered balcony, scanning the sky as the color drained from his face. "Too many." Kael moved instantly to her side, his instincts flaring hard with warning. His gaze tracked the circling shadows above them. "This isn’t a hunting party," he said grimly. The man beside him shook his head slowly. "No. This is extermination."
The word settled heavily in the air. Below them, the city had already erupted into motion as warriors rushed across the terraces and horns echoed through the mountains. Ancient barriers flickered to life along the palace walls, but even as the defenses rose, the truth was impossible to ignore.
They were outnumbered.
Ariana kept her gaze fixed on the sky as the dragons drew closer, their wings beating like thunder. Her fingers curled slightly at her sides, nails pressing into her palms. "They’re all coming for me." Kael did not hesitate. "Then they’ll have to go through me." She glanced at him, something tight pulling in her chest. "That’s not comforting."
The Dragon King’s voice echoed inside her mind, deep and steady. "The hunters have gathered." Ariana swallowed hard. "You mean all of them?" "Yes." Her throat tightened, guilt creeping in despite everything. "Because of me?" There was a pause before the answer came. "Because of the Sovereign."
Another roar split the sky as the first wave of dragons descended lower. The golden dragon beside her spread its wings protectively, its massive body shifting closer, shielding her without hesitation.
Kael turned toward the Dragon King. "You said the Sovereign commands dragons." The ancient creature’s gaze narrowed. "Only if the Sovereign is strong enough." Kael’s jaw tightened. "Then help her." The Dragon King did not answer immediately. It studied Ariana instead, as if weighing her worth against something ancient and unforgiving. The silence stretched, heavy enough that Ariana could hear her own heartbeat pounding in her ears. Finally, it spoke. "The Sovereign commands. But the Queen must also protect."
Ariana frowned slightly, unease settling deeper in her chest. "What does that mean?" The Dragon King lifted one massive claw toward the sky. "They will test you."
As if called by those words, three dragons broke from the swarm and dove toward the palace like falling stars, fire already building in their throats. Kael swore quietly. "Get behind me." Ariana grabbed his arm before he could move. "No." He turned sharply. "What?" Her voice steadied, even though her heart felt like it might break through her ribs. "If they’re testing me... then I need to answer." The Dragon King let out a low rumble of approval. "Good."
The first dragon opened its jaws, and flames surged toward the balcony in a violent wave.
Ariana stepped forward.
Every instinct told her to run. Every part of her body screamed at her to move, to hide, to survive. But something deeper held her in place.
The golden dragon moved with her, its wings spreading wider.
Her heart pounded painfully as the power inside her rose again, stronger than before and harder to control. It felt too big, too heavy, like it didn’t belong inside her at all. She lifted both hands, and golden light burst outward from her body. The air bent around her. The flames rushing toward them twisted in midair and stopped.
For a moment, everything went still.
Even Kael stared.
The fire hovered in the air as if time itself had paused. Ariana felt the power rushing through her, immense and unstable, pressing against her from the inside like it was trying to break free. Her breath shook as she clenched her hands, forcing it to obey.
The suspended flames exploded outward, scattering harmlessly across the sky.
The attacking dragon roared in shock.
Behind her, the Dragon King’s voice echoed again. "Again."
The second dragon dove, faster this time.
Ariana’s eyes burned brighter, but her arms trembled slightly now, the strain beginning to show. "Bow." The command rang out clearly, stronger than before, but it cost her more than she wanted to admit.
The dragon faltered midair. Its wings beat unevenly as it struggled against the invisible pressure forcing it downward. Slowly, it descended until its massive body crashed into the courtyard below with a thunderous impact.
Kael let out a breath that almost sounded like disbelief. "Remind me not to argue with you."
But the third dragon moved faster than the others.
It dove straight toward Ariana, its jaws opening wide.
Kael shifted instantly, launching forward, but before he could reach it, the Dragon King moved.
The ancient dragon shot into the sky with terrifying speed and collided with the attacker mid-flight. The impact shook the entire mountain as both creatures vanished into the clouds.
Ariana stared upward, her breathing uneven now. The power inside her flickered slightly, unstable, slipping at the edges. The effort was draining her faster than she wanted to admit.
Kael stepped closer, his voice lower now. "You’re pushing too hard." She shook her head slightly, even though her vision blurred for a second. "I’m fine." He met her gaze, not believing her for a second. "You’re not."
She didn’t answer, because the truth was already catching up to her.
Seconds later, the Dragon King returned and landed heavily on the terrace. The defeated dragon lay motionless below, but above them, the swarm roared in fury. More dragons circled. More descended. Hundreds of glowing red eyes stared down at the palace, waiting.
The man in black and gold spoke quietly. "They’re not retreating." Kael followed his gaze upward. "I didn’t expect them to."
The Dragon King’s voice echoed inside Ariana’s mind once more, darker than before.
"The Sovereign has awakened."
A pause followed, heavy and final.
"Now comes the war."
A chill ran through her, deeper than fear. "What kind of war?" The ancient dragon lifted its massive head toward the sky.
"The kind that ends kingdoms."
Kael stepped closer, his presence steady despite everything, grounding her even as the world felt like it was falling apart. "Whatever happens next," he said quietly, "you’re not facing it alone."
Ariana gave a faint, tired smile, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. "That’s good."
Because at that moment, the clouds above the mountain split apart again.
But this time, it wasn’t dragons.
A massive fortress of black stone drifted through the sky, ancient runes burning across its surface like molten gold. The dragon swarm parted around it, keeping their distance. The structure hovered above the city like a throne.
A figure stepped forward from its center. Tall. Still. Watching as if he had already won.
Ariana’s breath caught as the power inside her recoiled violently. Not hesitation. Not confusion. Fear.Real fear.
Her fingers tightened slightly at her sides as her chest tightened. Kael noticed immediately. "What is it?" he asked.
Her voice came out barely steady.
"I think... he came for me."
The man lifted one hand, calm and deliberate. Then he smiled.
And the sky exploded with power.
