The pressure disappeared so suddenly it left a hollow silence behind, like the space had been holding its breath and finally let it go. Ariana’s hands stayed firm on Kael’s shoulders as she leaned closer, her fingers trembling despite how hard she tried to steady them. "Kael... look at me," she said, her voice tight, the fear no longer hidden.

For a moment, nothing happened, and the stillness stretched just long enough to feel wrong. Then his chest rose unevenly, the breath catching halfway before settling, and his shoulders shifted under her hands as if his body was slowly pulling itself back together. Ariana didn’t move, her grip tightening instinctively as relief tried to rise, but never fully settled.

"Kael," she said again, softer now, searching.

His eyes opened, and the moment should have brought relief, but something in the way he looked at her stopped it before it could land. His gaze was steady, too steady, and it didn’t carry the recognition she had been waiting for. Ariana felt it first in her chest, a quiet drop that didn’t make sense yet but refused to go away.

"Kael...?" she asked, her voice lower now, uncertain.

He didn’t answer right away, but his breathing evened out in a way that felt too controlled for someone who had just gone through what he had. His eyes stayed on her, focused without hesitation, without adjustment, as if he had already been there before she spoke. That alone made her grip tighten again, her instincts refusing to settle.

Then his fingers moved, slow and deliberate, tightening around her hand.

Ariana felt it immediately, her pulse jumping as her grip reacted without thinking. "Kael, say something," she said, the edge in her voice sharper now, almost breaking through.

His lips parted, and for a second she thought he would answer. His jaw shifted slightly, like the words were there, but something held them back just long enough to matter. "I’m here," he said finally, and the voice was close enough to his to almost be convincing.

Almost.

Ariana’s breath caught before she could stop it, her eyes narrowing slightly as she studied his face more carefully. "Kael... look at me," she said again, quieter now, not asking, but checking.

He didn’t look away, and that was the problem.

There was no flicker of recognition settling into place, no moment of grounding, no sign of someone returning after being lost. He was already focused on her, already present, and it felt less like he had come back and more like something had been waiting for her to notice.

Ariana felt her chest tighten as the thought settled, her grip loosening slightly before she forced it to steady. "You’re back," she said, more to confirm it than to believe it.

"Yes," he answered.

The response came too easily, too clean, and the lack of strain in it made something in her chest tighten instead of ease. Ariana drew in a slow breath, her fingers shifting as she watched him more carefully now. "What do you remember?" she asked, her tone controlled, but testing.

There was a pause, not hesitation, but something else.

His fingers twitched slightly in her grip, like he was about to respond differently, but the moment passed before it could form. Then his hold tightened just enough to stop her hand from pulling away. "Everything," he said.

Ariana’s breath hitched slightly, her gaze sharpening. "Then tell me," she said, her voice steady now, though the tension beneath it had deepened.

His eyes didn’t leave hers. "I ended it," he said.

The answer was correct.

But it didn’t feel right.

Ariana shook her head slightly, her grip pulling against his this time. "No," she said quietly. "That’s not what I meant."

For the first time, something shifted, not in his posture or expression, but in the space around him. It tightened subtly, just enough for her to feel it, and her body reacted before her thoughts could catch up.

"Kael..." she said, slower now.

He didn’t answer.

His jaw tightened slightly, just enough to show something underneath, but it didn’t reach his voice.

Ariana pulled back just enough to create space, her chest tightening as something cold settled into place. "No," she said, her voice tight now, though she didn’t break eye contact.

His hand didn’t let her go.

The grip tightened, not painfully, but firm enough to stop her from pulling away. For a split second, his fingers shifted again, like he was trying to loosen his hold, but it didn’t follow through.

"Ariana," he said, and this time it sounded like him.

That made it worse.

She felt it then, clear and undeniable.

He had come back.
