The sky turned gold. Not from sunlight or fire, but from wings. Hundreds of massive dragons tore through the clouds, their bodies cutting across the battlefield as if the sky itself had been claimed. Their scales gleamed like molten metal, reflecting waves of light across the mountains, and the sound of their wings rolled through the valley like distant thunder that refused to fade. For the first time since the battle began, the hunter dragons hesitated, their red eyes flickering as they turned toward the incoming swarm.

Ariana stared upward, her breath catching. "Where did they come from?" The Dragon King’s voice answered inside her mind, steady and absolute. They answered the call. Her chest tightened. "My call?" A brief pause followed before the truth settled in. Your blood. The weight of it hit her hard. This wasn’t luck. This wasn’t timing. This was her. And if they fell, it would be because of her too. Beside her, Kael let out a low breath, watching the sky. "Well... that’s definitely an upgrade." She almost smiled, but it didn’t last.

High above them, Augustus remained still, untouched by the chaos as Abyss energy moved around him like a living cloak. He showed no fear. If anything, he looked mildly amused. "So," he said, his voice carrying across the mountains, "the Dragon King finally gathered what remains of his army." His gaze lowered to Ariana. "Impressive." The royal dragons spread out in perfect formation, and then the sky ignited. Golden fire erupted from their jaws, pushing back the Abyss darkness in waves. For the first time since Augustus arrived, the shadow retreated. Ariana felt the pressure in her chest ease just enough to breathe. "It’s working," she said.

Kael didn’t look away. "Don’t trust it." He was right. The Dragon King descended heavily onto the terrace, stone cracking beneath his claws. Even wounded, he stood unshaken. The royal legion will hold the hunters. Ariana stepped forward. "And Augustus?" The Dragon King’s gaze lifted toward the man in the sky. He is yours. She blinked. "Mine?" Kael stepped beside her instantly. "Ours." The Dragon King studied him, then gave a slow nod. Yes. The bond between them surged, gold and white energy aligning instead of clashing. It felt different this time. Stable. Real.

Above them, the battle exploded into chaos. Royal dragons clashed with hunter dragons, fire and force tearing through the sky as bodies collided and fell. For a moment, it looked like the tide had turned. Augustus sighed. "I had hoped they were extinct." Then he raised his hand, and everything changed. The Abyss energy around him twisted violently, condensing into a massive vortex above the battlefield. The sky bent around it, light folding inward as if it was being consumed.

Ariana felt it instantly. Her power flickered. "He’s doing something." The man beside her stared upward, his face pale. "No..." Ariana turned sharply. "What?" His voice dropped. "That’s not an attack." Her stomach tightened. "Then what is it?" He didn’t hesitate this time. "He’s opening a gate." Cold fear ran through her chest. "To where?" The Dragon King answered. The Abyss. The vortex widened, dark lightning tearing through it as the air trembled. Even the royal dragons pulled back now, their roars no longer confident.

Kael rubbed the back of his neck, watching the sky. "That’s definitely not good." Above them, Augustus smiled faintly. "If dragons wish to fight," he said calmly, "then let them face what waits beneath them." The vortex tore open. The sky screamed. And something began to pour out. Not one creature. Hundreds. Black shapes spilled from the gate, moving like living shadows, their forms twisting unnaturally as they spread across the sky. Their wings looked like smoke, unstable and wrong, and their silver eyes burned cold and empty.

"They’re not slowing down," Ariana whispered, her voice shaking. The man beside her answered under his breath. "Abyss beasts." They attacked immediately. One royal dragon barely reacted before a creature tore through its wing. Blood spread across the sky, bright against gold. More followed. Dozens. Then hundreds. The sky that had been filled with dragons was now overrun with something else entirely. Kael exhaled slowly. "That’s cheating." Ariana tightened her grip on him. "We can’t fight all of those... Kael, if this keeps going..." She stopped, but he understood. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

His hand found hers without hesitation. "We’re not losing here." The certainty in his voice grounded her. Above them, Augustus’ gaze locked onto her. "You misunderstand," he said calmly. "You were never meant to win." The Abyss surged forward, swallowing more of the sky. "I am not destroying this world," he continued, his voice dropping. "I am correcting it." Darkness spread wider, pressing against everything, crushing the battlefield under its weight.

Then the Dragon King roared. Louder than before. The sound shook the entire mountain. Ariana looked up. "What is he doing?" The man beside her stared into the distance, stunned. "He’s calling them." "Calling who?" Far beyond the battlefield, the clouds began to move, not like a storm, but like something answering. Then the sky broke again. One dragon burst through the clouds. Then another. Then hundreds. Their scales shone with ancient gold, brighter and sharper, their eyes burning with something deeper than fire. They moved with precision, not chaos.

For the first time since Augustus arrived, he frowned, just slightly, but it was enough. Ariana saw it, and something inside her finally steadied, a small, stubborn certainty rising against the fear. This wasn’t over. Not even close. Because as the golden army filled the sky, something moved inside the Abyss gate, something larger than the beasts, larger than the dragons, something that made even the royal legion hesitate mid-flight. The air tightened as its presence pushed forward, wrong and overwhelming, and Kael slowly lifted his gaze, his expression shifting for the first time since the battle began. "...Okay," he muttered under his breath, eyes narrowing as the shadow grew. "Now that’s a problem."
