Ariana felt it in the way her chest refused to loosen, in the way her body stayed alert even when nothing was visibly happening. The wolves had not followed, but their presence lingered in her mind, and the certainty that they were still watching made it impossible to feel safe.

Kael did not wait for anything to change.

The moment the silence grew too heavy, his hand tightened around her wrist and he pulled her with him, his decision already made before he spoke. "We’re leaving," he said, his voice controlled but not calm, and that difference was enough to make Ariana follow without arguing.

She stumbled slightly at first, caught off guard by the sudden movement, but quickly matched his pace as he led her deeper into the forest. The trees closed around them, thickening as they moved farther from the clearing, and the path beneath their feet grew uneven, forcing her to focus on keeping up. His grip did not loosen, not even when she steadied herself, and she could feel the tension in him through every point of contact.

"Kael," she said, her voice quieter now, trying to understand the urgency in his movements. "Where are we going?"

"Somewhere they can’t interfere," he answered, not looking back.

The response came too quickly, too tightly controlled, and Ariana knew immediately that it was not the full truth. The weight of his words settled into her, and she felt her stomach tighten. "Decide what?"

He didn’t hesitate this time. "You."

The answer made her breath catch, not because she didn’t expect it, but because of how certain he sounded. She exhaled slowly, trying to steady herself as they continued forward, the forest growing quieter the deeper they went.

"And coming here changes that?" she asked.

"It gives me time," he replied.

"For what?"

Kael didn’t answer, and that silence said more than anything else he could have given her.

They moved without speaking for a while after that, the only sounds coming from their footsteps and the faint movement of leaves overhead. Ariana focused on his breathing, on the rhythm beneath her hand when she reached for him again, and this time she felt it clearly.

The shift inside him had not eased.

If anything, it had drawn closer.

His heartbeat was stronger now, heavier, like something beneath it had settled deeper into place, and the tension in his body had not disappeared. It had simply changed, tightening inward instead of pushing outward.

"You’re not okay," she said softly.

"I’m holding it," he answered.

"That’s not the same thing."

"No," he admitted, his voice quieter now. "It isn’t."

The honesty in that made her chest tighten, but she didn’t pull away. Instead, she moved closer, her hand resting more firmly against his chest as if she could steady him by staying there.

They reached the edge of his territory not long after, though Ariana didn’t recognize it as such until she saw the structure ahead. It stood partially hidden between the trees, built into the land rather than rising above it, solid and quiet in a way that matched him perfectly. There was nothing excessive about it, nothing designed to impress, but it felt strong, like it existed for a purpose rather than appearance.

Kael slowed to a stop.

The moment he did, Ariana felt the change again, sharper this time, like the control he had been maintaining had tightened the second they were no longer moving.

"This is yours," she said.

"Yes."

He released her hand just long enough to open the door, then stepped aside to let her enter first. Ariana hesitated for a fraction of a second, not out of fear, but because the air inside felt different, closed and still, like everything outside had been cut off the moment she crossed the threshold.

Then she stepped in.

Kael followed immediately, closing the door behind them, and the sound of it settling into place felt heavier than it should have. The quiet inside was deeper, more contained, and for a moment Ariana stood still, letting her breathing adjust as she took in the space around her.

There were no watching eyes here, no wolves at the edge of the clearing, no pressure from the outside.

But something else was stronger.

She felt it almost immediately.

The Lycan.

Her gaze shifted back to Kael, and this time she saw the difference clearly. He hadn’t moved far from the door, but his posture had changed. His shoulders were tighter, his breathing deeper, and when he lifted his head, the darkness in his eyes was no longer subtle.

It wasn’t just tension.

It was presence.

"You said this would help," she said, her voice softer now.

"It will," he answered.

But the words weren’t steady.

Ariana took a slow step toward him, her instincts warning her to be careful, but she didn’t listen to them. "Then why does it feel worse?" she asked.

Kael exhaled slowly, his gaze dropping for a moment before returning to her. "Because there’s nothing else here to hold it back," he said.

The truth in his voice made her breath catch.

"No wolves," he continued. "No one watching. Nothing to distract it."

"Except me," she said.

His jaw tightened.

"Yes."

The answer settled between them, heavy and unavoidable.

Ariana didn’t step away. Instead, she moved closer.

Slowly. Deliberately.

Kael’s body reacted immediately, the tension in him sharpening as something beneath his control pressed forward again. His hand lifted slightly, as if to stop her, but it didn’t reach her. It hovered there, caught between instinct and restraint.

"You should keep your distance," he said.

Ariana shook her head. "No."

"Ariana—"

"I’m not leaving," she said.

The certainty in her voice didn’t break, and it only made the moment tighter, more charged than before.

Kael’s control strained visibly, his breathing uneven now as the space between them disappeared completely. For a moment, he didn’t move, didn’t speak, as if he was holding everything in place by force alone.

Ariana reached for him first.

Her hand pressed against his chest again, steady and unafraid, grounding herself in the strength of his heartbeat even as it quickened beneath her touch.

"I’m still here," she said.

The words were quieter now, but they carried more weight than anything else she had said.

Kael’s eyes closed for a brief second before opening again, and when he looked at her, there was no hiding it anymore.

"You don’t understand what you’re doing," he said.

Ariana held his gaze.

"Then show me," she answered.

The space between them did not break.

It held, tightening instead of pulling apart, and this time there was no distance left for him to use as control.

Everything he was holding back was right there between them.

And neither of them stepped away.
