Chapter 12

For a moment, Kael could not move.

The golden circle burned across the black stone floor, its light stretching outward in glowing lines that climbed the chamber walls and wrapped around the pillars. Symbols pulsed beneath Ariana’s feet, alive with power that filled the entire space. She stood at the center, surrounded by golden light that moved like something with intent. Chains formed from that light wrapped tightly around her wrists, her shoulders, and her throat, tightening every time the power surged. She trembled as she saw him, her eyes wide with something between relief and fear. "Kael..." she whispered, and the sound of her voice hit him harder than anything in that room. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

His wolf surged instantly, violent and uncontrollable, slamming against his control with one clear instinct. Break them. Break everything. Kael’s gaze snapped to the man standing beside her. He was calm, composed, dressed in black and gold, watching everything unfold like it had already been decided. Nothing about him showed strain or urgency. That alone made Kael’s chest tighten. "Let her go," Kael said, his voice low and steady, but carrying a threat he did not try to hide.

The man tilted his head slightly, studying him. "You crossed the barrier," he said. "Impressive." Kael took one step forward. The chains reacted immediately. They tightened around Ariana’s throat and wrists, and she gasped as pain flashed across her face. Kael froze, rage hitting him so fast it almost broke his control. "What did you do to her?" he demanded. The man’s expression did not change. "Protected her." Ariana shook her head weakly, trying to speak, but the chains tightened again, cutting her off. That was enough. Something inside Kael snapped.

"Touch her again," he said, his voice turning cold and dangerous, "and I will tear this entire place apart." The man watched him carefully. "You would destroy this city for one woman?" Kael did not hesitate. "Yes." The answer came without pause, without doubt. For a brief second, something shifted in the man’s expression, not fear, but recognition. Ariana forced herself to stand straighter despite the chains, her breathing uneven. "Stop talking like I’m not here," she said. The moment her power stirred, the chains tightened again, forcing a sharp breath from her lips.

Kael moved.

The instant he stepped into the circle, power slammed into him with crushing force. He was thrown backward and crashed into a pillar, the impact cracking stone and sending pain through his body. Ariana cried out, the sound breaking through everything. "Stop!" The man exhaled slowly. "I warned you." Kael pushed himself back to his feet, wiping blood from his lip without looking away from Ariana. The bond burned now, sharp and raw, carrying her pain directly into him. "You’re going to regret that," he said quietly.

The man stepped closer to the edge of the circle. "You don’t understand what this is." Kael took another step, slower this time, ignoring the pressure building in the air. "Do I not?" he replied. His eyes dropped to the chains around Ariana’s throat. "Looks like a prisoner to me." The man’s voice shifted slightly. "She is awakening." Ariana shook her head weakly. "I don’t want this." For the first time, there was something softer in the man’s tone. "It isn’t about what you want." Kael’s expression hardened. "That works both ways."

The chamber fell silent as the power surged again. The symbol beneath Ariana flared, spreading outward in sharp lines. Four curved outward, and one rose upward through the center. The man watched it with satisfaction. "Perfect timing." Kael’s wolf growled low. "What are you doing?" The man turned toward him. "Finishing what the council tried to erase." Ariana shook her head, her voice breaking. "No." The man raised his hand, and the chains lifted her slightly off the ground. Her body shook as the power surged through her, stronger now, harder to contain. Kael felt it instantly through the bond. Pain. Fear. Something deeper.

"The Sovereign must awaken fully," the man said. Kael’s chest tightened. "Sovereign?" "The ruler of all bloodlines." Ariana’s voice trembled. "I don’t want to rule anyone." The man did not hesitate. "That has never mattered." The golden light intensified, and behind her, wings formed again, stretching across the chamber like something ancient was rising through her. A faint crown flickered above her head. The air grew heavier. Kael could feel the shift beneath his feet. If this continued, something permanent would happen, something neither of them could undo.

Kael stepped forward again, slower this time, his voice steady despite the pressure building around him. "Ariana." Her eyes found his immediately. The moment their gazes locked, the bond reacted, stronger than before. The chains flickered. The man noticed instantly, his expression sharpening. "Interesting." Kael took another step. "Ariana, stay with me." Her breathing steadied slightly, just enough to hold onto him. "I can hear them," she whispered. "Who?" Kael asked. "All of them," she said, her voice shaking. "Every bloodline."

"That’s enough," Kael said.

He stepped into the circle again and grabbed her hand. Power exploded through the chamber, but this time it did not throw him back. The chains reacted, but not the same way. They weakened. Then one broke. Then another. Golden restraints shattered one after another, the sound echoing through the chamber. The man stared, something like disbelief crossing his face. "That should not be possible." Kael pulled Ariana into his arms, holding her firmly as the light flickered around them. "You’re done with her," he said.

For the first time, the man looked unsettled. "You’ve disrupted the awakening." Kael did not loosen his hold. "Good." Ariana looked up at him, her breathing uneven. "What did we do?" The man’s voice lowered, more serious now. "You didn’t stop it." The symbol beneath them erupted with light. The entire mountain shook. Cracks spread through the stone as dust fell from above. Outside the chamber, horns began to sound again, louder than before, but this time they came from beyond the mountains.

The man turned toward the doors, his expression changing for the first time. "No..." Kael frowned. "What now?" The man’s voice dropped. "You weren’t the only one who felt the Sovereign awaken." Kael’s grip tightened instinctively. "Who else?" A deep roar echoed across the mountains, heavy and ancient, something far older than wolves or vampires. The sound carried through the chamber and settled into Kael’s chest like a warning. The man closed his eyes briefly before looking back at him.

"They’re here."

Kael’s voice hardened. "Who?"

The man met his gaze, and this time, there was no control left in his expression.

"The ones who killed the first Sovereign."
