Darkness swallowed the sky.

It wasn’t clouds or smoke. It moved like something alive, spreading from Augustus’s hand in a slow, unstoppable wave. It rolled over the mountains and devoured the last of the sunlight above the hidden city, turning everything dim and heavy. The air twisted under its weight, bending unnaturally, as if the world itself was struggling to breathe.

Dragons scattered immediately. Their massive wings beat wildly as instinct took over, but it didn’t matter how fast they flew. The darkness chased them. Fire flashed across the sky for a moment, desperate and bright, but it vanished just as quickly, swallowed whole. One dragon screamed as its flame died in its throat, its body dropping from the sky like something already dead.

Below, the city broke into chaos. Voices shouted across the terraces, horns echoed through the mountain halls, and soldiers ran in every direction, trying to hold a defense that was already failing. Ariana barely heard any of it. The pressure hit her first. The golden power inside her flickered weakly, like a candle fighting against a storm. Her chest tightened painfully, her breath catching as her knees almost gave out.

Kael caught her before she could fall. "Stay with me," he said, his voice low but firm. His grip tightened, grounding her. Ariana forced herself to breathe through the pain. "I’m trying," she whispered, though it felt like something inside her was slipping through her fingers. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

High above them, Augustus floated untouched, the darkness curling around him like it belonged there. He didn’t look strained. He didn’t even look focused. He looked calm. "This world," he said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the battlefield, "has forgotten what true power looks like." The darkness thickened as he spoke, pressing harder against everything below.

Ariana stared upward, her heart pounding. "It’s draining them," she said, watching another dragon fall, its wings folding as it lost strength mid-flight. The man beside her nodded grimly. "That power comes from the Abyss." Kael glanced at him. "And?" The man’s voice dropped. "The Abyss doesn’t fight magic. It consumes it." The words settled cold in Ariana’s chest. She could feel it now. Every second the darkness remained, it was taking something from her.

Augustus noticed. His gaze returned to her, sharp and knowing. "You feel it, don’t you?" Ariana forced herself to lift her chin despite the weight crushing her. "You’re cheating," she said, though her voice was weaker than she wanted it to be. A faint smile touched his lips. "I prefer the word evolving." The Dragon King roared and surged forward, golden fire bursting from his jaws, but the moment it touched the darkness, it disappeared completely. Even he hesitated.

Kael exhaled slowly, watching everything fall apart around them. "Then we change the rules," he said quietly. Ariana turned to him, fear slipping through her control. "Kael... we can’t fight that." He looked at her, not at the sky, not at Augustus. Just her. "Maybe not," he said. "But I’m not letting you face it alone." Something in his voice made her chest tighten for a different reason.

Her hand found his without thinking. "I need your help," she said. He raised an eyebrow slightly despite everything. "You usually do." She shook her head, her grip tightening. "Not like this." The moment their hands locked, something shifted. Power surged between them, not violent, but steady, as if it had been waiting. Golden light rose from Ariana, while white energy flared from Kael. The two forces collided, then merged, forming something stronger than either of them alone.

The light burst outward, pushing back the darkness just enough to breathe again. Ariana gasped as the power filled her, stronger than before, but this time it didn’t feel like it was tearing her apart. It held. It listened. Kael glanced at their joined hands, surprised despite himself. "Okay," he said quietly. "That’s new." Ariana almost smiled, even as her eyes burned with light.

She stepped forward, lifting her hand toward the sky. "Dragons!" Her voice carried farther this time, stronger, clearer. Wings shifted above her. One dragon turned. Then another. Soon dozens circled above the palace, not attacking, but waiting. Listening. Ariana swallowed, her heart racing. "Stand with me," she said.

For a moment, it felt like it might be enough.

Then Augustus raised his hand again.

The darkness twisted violently, and a second wave of Abyss power crashed outward, stronger than before. It hit the dragons like a storm. Screams filled the sky as half of them fell instantly, their strength ripped away. Ariana felt it like a physical blow. The light around her flickered. Kael tightened his grip on her hand. "Stay with me," he said again, sharper this time.

Augustus watched them calmly. "You cannot defeat me." The darkness surged forward once more, pressing against their light. Ariana clenched her jaw, fear and anger colliding inside her chest. "I won’t let you destroy this world." Augustus tilted his head slightly, almost curious. "You misunderstand." His voice dropped, colder now. "I’m not destroying the world." The Abyss spread across the sky like a living storm. "I’m remaking it."

The palace trembled as the darkness swallowed the sky again. Ariana felt her strength slipping, her light flickering under the pressure. For a moment, she thought she was going to lose it. Then the Dragon King roared.

Louder than before.

The sound tore through the battlefield, shaking the mountain itself. Ariana looked up, startled. "What is he doing?" The man beside her whispered, stunned. "He’s calling them." "Calling who?" Ariana asked, her voice barely steady.

Far in the distance, the clouds began to move.Not like a storm.Like something was coming.

A shadow passed across the sky. Then one dragon burst through the clouds. Then another. Then dozens more. Ariana’s eyes widened as her breath caught. These were not like the others. Their scales shone like ancient gold, and their eyes burned with something brighter, something older. They did not hesitate. They flew straight toward the battlefield.

The Dragon King’s voice echoed in her mind, filled with something she had never heard before.

Pride.

"The royal dragons have returned."

The sky filled with wings once more.

And this time, the war had only just begun.
