The air shifted the moment the man stepped forward. Ariana felt it before she could fully understand it, like something unseen had pressed down on the space around her. The warmth she had created thinned, not disappearing, but losing its balance just enough to feel wrong. The golden energy around her flickered once, and that single break was enough to warn her.

Something had changed.

The man barely moved, yet his presence spread across the platform, quiet but undeniable. It did not surge like the Abyss or overwhelm with force, but it settled into everything, pressing into the air, the stone, and the space between breaths. Even standing still, Ariana felt it tightening around her, making each breath slightly heavier. It was not loud or violent, but it was controlled, and that made it worse.

Kael reacted first. He stepped in front of her without hesitation, his body already angled between Ariana and the man. His posture remained steady, but every part of him had sharpened, ready to move the second something went wrong. "I don’t like this," he said quietly.

Ariana didn’t answer right away. Her eyes stayed fixed on the man, studying him carefully despite the pressure building around her. "Who are you?" she asked, her voice steady even as her instincts tightened. She refused to let the shift in the air show weakness.

The man smiled faintly, as if the question amused him. "I am someone who understands what you are becoming," he said calmly. Ariana’s expression hardened slightly as she met his gaze without stepping back. "I already know what I am."

The man tilted his head slightly, studying her with quiet interest. "Do you?" he asked, and the air seemed to grow colder, not sharply, but enough to be noticed. It wasn’t the cold of the Abyss, but something deeper, like a presence waiting beneath still water. Around them, the council remained silent, but their attention had shifted completely.

The Elder spoke, his voice cutting cleanly through the tension. "State your purpose." The man didn’t even turn his head toward him, his focus never leaving Ariana. "I’m helping," he replied.

Kael let out a low breath, unimpressed. "That doesn’t sound helpful," he said. The man’s gaze shifted to him slowly, measuring him with quiet interest. "Storm Wolf," he said, almost thoughtfully, "you should be careful."

Kael didn’t move. "You first," he replied without hesitation. The man’s attention returned to Ariana, his expression unchanged. "Show them the truth," he said.

Ariana’s chest tightened slightly. "There is no other truth," she answered, her voice firm. The man’s faint smile didn’t fade. "There always is." 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

The golden light beneath her skin stirred again, stronger this time, but no longer completely calm. The man took a slow step closer. "Balance is not only light," he said quietly. Ariana steadied her breathing, refusing to let the shift inside her show. "What are you trying to say?"

"You restore," he said after a brief pause, "but you can also end things." The words landed harder than she expected, settling deep in her chest. Kael reacted immediately. "She’s not that."

The man didn’t argue. "She’s both," he said calmly. Ariana shook her head, but this time the certainty didn’t come as easily. "No," she said, though the hesitation lingered.

"You felt it," the man continued. Ariana froze, because she had. The memory surfaced instantly, the moment her power surged too far during the battle, too fast, too uncontrolled, carrying something sharper than it should have.

It had unsettled her then. It unsettled her now.

The man watched her carefully. "That is the part you are trying to ignore," he said. The golden light around her flickered again, and the platform beneath her dimmed slightly as the balance weakened. It was a small shift, but the council noticed.

Kael stepped closer. "Hey. Focus," he said. Ariana looked at him, grounding herself in the steadiness of his gaze. "You’re in control," he added.

She took a slow breath. "I know," she said, and this time she held onto it. The instability didn’t disappear, but it stopped spreading, settling beneath the surface instead of breaking through. It stayed contained.

"You cannot protect everything," the man said more quietly. "But you can choose what survives." The golden light pulsed faster, drawing subtle reactions from the council as their attention sharpened.

The Elder raised his hand. "Enough." The air tightened instantly, cutting through the moment. The man fell silent, though he didn’t step back.

The Elder’s gaze returned to Ariana. "Your power is unstable." Ariana held his gaze. "It’s evolving," she said.

"Yes," the Elder replied. "And that is the problem." Kael crossed his arms slightly. "Or the solution," he said. The Elder ignored him.

"You stand at the center of every bloodline," the Elder continued. Ariana’s voice remained steady. "I didn’t choose that." "No," he replied, "but you must answer for it."

Silence pressed down over the platform, heavier now, more focused. This was no longer observation. It was judgment.

"You will remain here," the Elder said.

Ariana blinked. "What?" The Elder’s voice didn’t change. "Until the council decides your fate."

Kael stepped forward immediately. "No," he said, his voice sharp and final. The council shifted slightly, tension tightening across the platform.

Ariana felt it instantly. This was the moment that would decide everything. She took a slow breath, then stepped forward.

"No."

Her voice was steady.

The council stilled.

"You refuse," the Elder said. Ariana met his gaze. "I won’t be held here."

This time, the golden light didn’t flicker. It rose steadily, controlled and grounded, stronger than before because she wasn’t forcing it. It responded to her.

Kael relaxed slightly beside her. "That’s my answer too," he said. The Elder studied them both carefully. "You would challenge the council."

"I’m not your enemy," Ariana said, her voice firm. "But I won’t be your prisoner." The golden light expanded slightly, pushing back against the pressure around them.

For the first time, the council felt it clearly.

Not just her power.

Her control.

The man in the shadows smiled faintly. "Now they see," he said.

The Elder raised his hand, and the platform trembled beneath them. The council shifted again, preparing. Ariana’s heart pounded.

"If they move, we leave," Kael said. "I’m ready," Ariana replied.

The bond between them pulsed, strong and steady.

Then the Elder lowered his hand.

"You may leave."

The tension broke instantly.

Ariana blinked. "What?" The Elder’s expression remained cold. "This is not finished."

"We will meet again."

"I know," Ariana replied.

The man stepped back into shadow, still smiling like he already knew what would come next. Kael exhaled slowly. "That went better than expected," he muttered.

Ariana glanced at him. "That’s your version of better?" Kael shrugged slightly. "We’re still alive." "Barely." "Still counts."

The portal opened again behind them, light returning, steady and waiting. Ariana took one last look at the council, letting the moment settle, then turned away. Together, she and Kael stepped through.

The mountain returned instantly.

Sky. Wind. Dragons.

Everything real again.

"That was worse than the battle," Ariana said. "Yeah," Kael replied, "way worse."

The Dragon King stepped forward. "You returned," he said. Ariana nodded slightly. "They’re not done."

"No," the dragon replied. "And neither are you."

Ariana looked toward the horizon.

The storm hadn’t faded. It had grown.

And for the first time, she understood clearly.

This was no longer just about the Abyss.

This was about everything. And she was standing right at the center of it.
