Ariana felt the pull before she fully understood what was happening. One moment she was reaching for Kael, and the next, everything around her twisted as the space folded in on itself. The connection between them snapped so suddenly that it left a sharp ache in her chest, deep enough to steal her breath for a second. It did not feel like distance. It felt like something had been torn away before she could hold onto it. Then everything disappeared.

There was no sound, no movement, and no sense of direction, only a heavy darkness that surrounded her completely. It pressed in from all sides, thick and silent, like it had been waiting for her to arrive. The absence of everything felt wrong in a way she could not ignore. Even the memory of where she had been moments ago felt distant, like something slipping further away.

She landed hard on her knees, and although the impact sent a dull pain through her body, she barely registered it. Her first instinct was to reach out again, searching for the bond that had grounded her through everything. "Kael," she said, the name sharper than she intended, as if saying it might pull him back to her. But her voice did not echo or return. It vanished instantly, swallowed by the space around her without a trace.

Ariana slowly pushed herself up and looked around. The ground beneath her was still the same dark surface, smooth like glass, but this place felt deeper than before. It was not just empty. It felt aware in a way she could not explain, as if something was watching her without needing to be seen. That realization made her chest tighten, because this did not feel like another part of the trial.

It felt like something else entirely.

She took a slow breath and forced herself to calm down, knowing that panic would only make things worse. The lines continued to spread until they formed a large circle around her, enclosing her within it before finally going still. The silence returned, heavier than before, and Ariana found that she trusted it even less. She waited, her body tense, her breathing controlled, but nothing happened. That stillness felt worse than any immediate threat, like something was giving her time on purpose.

"Are you going to show yourself?" she asked, keeping her voice steady.

For a moment, there was no response. Then a soft sound echoed through the space, quiet but deliberate, enough to make her turn immediately. Ariana felt it instantly.

The figure stopped a few steps away, still not fully taking shape, but its focus was clear. It was fixed entirely on her.

Then it spoke.

"You are early."

The voice was calm, neither cold nor warm, but certain in a way that made it difficult to ignore. Ariana frowned slightly. "Early for what?"

There was a brief pause before the answer came.

"For what you are becoming."

Ariana felt her chest tighten at those words, because she had heard something like that too many times already. None of those times had ended well. "I’m not becoming anything I don’t choose," she said firmly, forcing the words out like they mattered.

"You answered," the voice corrected.

"Because it is true."

Ariana took a slow breath. "Then explain it."

"You carry something that does not belong to this world," the voice said.

Ariana’s eyes narrowed. "What does that mean?"

That made her chest tighten sharply. "I’m not sharing it with anyone," she said, even as the words felt weaker than before.

"You already are."
