Chapter 10

Ariana woke to warmth.

Not the violent heat that had torn through her body before everything went dark, but something steady and controlled, like it was meant to keep her calm. For a moment, she let herself believe she was safe again. She thought of her small house, of quiet nights and familiar walls, of the life she had only just lost. But the moment she opened her eyes, that illusion shattered. The ceiling above her was carved from pale stone veined with gold, high and flawless, lit by crystal lanterns that glowed too evenly to be natural. Nothing about this place felt real.

She pushed herself upright too quickly, and dizziness hit her hard. Her breath caught as she pressed a hand to her chest, trying to steady herself. Something inside her felt different. Not broken, not out of control, but awake in a way she could not ignore, like it was watching her instead of belonging to her. The sensation made her uneasy. It made her feel like she was no longer alone inside her own body.

"You should move slowly."

The voice came from across the room. Ariana’s head snapped up, her pulse quickening. A woman stood near a wide arched doorway, calm and composed, carrying a tray as if nothing about this situation was strange. She looked young, but there was something in her eyes that felt older, something that made Ariana instinctively wary. "Where am I?" Ariana asked. The woman set the tray down before answering. "Safe." Ariana let out a breath, frustration rising. "That’s not an answer." The woman met her gaze calmly. "It’s the truth."

Ariana stood despite the weakness in her legs, forcing herself to stay steady. The floor beneath her feet was warm, unnatural in a way that only made her more uneasy. "I want a real answer," she said. The woman studied her for a moment before replying. "You are in Aurelith." Ariana frowned. "What is that?" "A place hidden from the council, from the bloodlines, and from the world you knew." The words settled heavily. Ariana’s chest tightened as the last memory returned. The clearing. The power. Kael.

"Kael." The name slipped out before she could stop it, and something inside her reacted instantly. The woman noticed. "He is not here." The simple answer hit harder than it should have. Ariana swallowed, forcing her voice steady. "What did you do to me?" The woman’s expression softened slightly. "We did not harm you." "That’s not what I asked." For a moment, something like approval flickered in the woman’s eyes. "Your awakening had already begun," she said. "We only brought you somewhere it could continue safely."

Ariana looked down at her hands, and her breath caught. Faint gold moved beneath her skin, soft but alive. She pulled her hands back instinctively. "What is happening to me?" she asked. The woman did not hesitate. "You are becoming what you were born to be." Ariana shook her head immediately. "Everyone keeps talking like I’m some prophecy instead of a person." "You are both," the woman replied. Ariana’s voice tightened. "I don’t want to be either." The woman’s gaze did not soften. "That has never mattered to destiny."

Frustration built in Ariana’s chest, sharp and overwhelming. She wanted to argue, to deny everything, but none of it felt like it would change anything. "What do you want from me?" she asked instead. The woman turned toward the archway. "Come with me." Ariana hesitated, every instinct telling her not to trust this, but she followed anyway. The moment she stepped into the corridor, cool mountain air brushed against her skin. She moved toward an open window and looked out, and her breath caught.

A city stretched across the mountainside, vast and impossible. White stone and gold towers rose into the sky, bridges connecting cliffs, water flowing in controlled streams below. Figures moved throughout the city, but none of them were entirely human. Some carried wings, others moved with unnatural grace, and all of them seemed to belong there in a way Ariana never could. She stepped back slowly. "What is this place?" she asked. The woman stood beside her. "Home." Ariana shook her head immediately. "No." The woman did not argue. "Not the home you remember. But it was your bloodline’s."

The words hit harder than anything else. Memories surfaced all at once. Her mother’s warnings. The fear. The rules she never understood. Run if I tell you to run. Never trust anyone who knows your name. Never let them see your eyes. Ariana’s chest tightened painfully. "Who are you?" she asked. "Seraphine," the woman answered. "A guardian. Or I was meant to be." Ariana frowned. "You knew me?" "I knew of you." Ariana looked away. "That’s not the same." "No," Seraphine said quietly. "It isn’t."

They stopped before a pair of massive bronze doors. Guards stood outside, watching Ariana with something she did not expect. Not hostility. Not curiosity. Respect. That unsettled her more than anything else. When the doors opened, a circular chamber revealed itself, sunlight pouring through a high dome onto a symbol carved into the floor. Five lines extended from a single point, and the moment Ariana stepped closer, the gold beneath her skin pulsed in response. "What is this?" she asked. "Truth," Seraphine said. Ariana let out a breath. "No one here answers normally, do they?" "Rarely."

Footsteps echoed from the far side of the chamber. Ariana turned as a man stepped out of the shadows. He was tall, dressed in black and gold, his presence calm but heavy with something she could not explain. He looked at her like he had been waiting. "Welcome back, Ariana Sinclair," he said. Her throat tightened. "I’ve never been here before." A faint smile touched his lips. "Not in this life." The words hit her hard. "What does that mean?" she asked. He stepped closer. "When the Sovereign dies, the blood does not. It waits... until it is needed again."

The symbol beneath her feet flared suddenly, golden light rising around her. Ariana’s breath caught as panic rushed in. "No..." she whispered. The man’s expression sharpened. Then a horn echoed across the mountains, loud and urgent. Seraphine turned toward the doors, her face pale. "He found us." Ariana’s heart slammed against her ribs. "Who?" she asked, even though she already knew. A furious howl tore through the city, raw and unmistakable. Kael. The man looked at the light surrounding her and said quietly, "He came too soon."
