Chapter 100
No one moved for a second after Cassian spoke. The clearing held in a tense stillness, as if everything inside it had paused to adjust to his presence. The storm around Kael tightened instead of spreading, and even the darkness around Ariana flickered, reacting in a way that felt uncertain.
Cassian did not rush forward. He stood where he was, his attention fixed entirely on Ariana as if the chaos around her was the only thing that mattered. "You’ve let it go too far," he said, his voice calm but carrying easily through the pressure in the air.
Mira’s expression hardened as she turned toward him. "You should not be here."
Cassian didn’t look at her. "And yet here I am," he replied, and the quiet certainty in his tone made the space feel sharper.
Kyrindor stepped forward slightly, his presence pressing against the domain in a steady, grounding way. The cracks in the ground stopped spreading, and the air compressed just enough to keep the clearing from breaking apart completely. "This is not your place to interfere," he said.
Cassian’s gaze shifted to him briefly, measuring. "No," he agreed, "but it is no longer contained."
That settled heavily. Kael didn’t take his eyes off Ariana. She was still on her knees, her body trembling as the darkness along her skin crept higher, brushing the edges of her eyes while her breathing broke unevenly.
"She’s getting worse," Kael said, his voice tight.
Mira stepped forward again, silver light forming around her hands. "We are aware."
"Then do something."
"We are trying."
Kael’s jaw tightened at that, frustration building fast under everything else. "Not fast enough."
Before anyone could respond, Ariana’s body jerked again.
Her hands pressed hard against her chest as the mark flared violently beneath her skin, the dark lines surging upward until they reached her eyes completely. When her head lifted again, the black had fully taken over.
Kael felt the change immediately "Ariana," he said, already moving toward her.
Mira shifted to block him, her voice sharper now. "Do not touch her again."
"She needs me."
"She needs you alive."
Kael ignored her and stepped past her anyway. The moment he moved closer, the pressure in the clearing changed. The darkness did not push him away this time, but instead pulled toward him, reacting to his presence like something that recognized him.
Kael felt it in his chest first, a sharp pull that made his breath hitch before he could steady it. The fractured thread between them tightened violently, uneven and unstable, but strong enough to drag him forward.
"Ariana..."
Her head snapped toward him, too fast, her eyes locking onto his.
"Kael," she said, and this time her voice carried a faint echo, like something else was speaking through her.
Kael didn’t stop.He closed the distance, ignoring everything else as he reached her. "I’m here," he said, steady even as the pressure between them built.
Her fingers lifted slowly, her movement uneven like she was fighting to control it. For a second, it looked like she might reach for him.
Then her hand snapped forward and hit his chest, stopping him mid-step. It wasn’t a strike meant to push him back, but a firm hold that kept him exactly where he was.
Kael froze as her palm pressed firmly against him, the contact sending something cold through his body instantly. It pushed through his chest like it was searching for something inside him, and his storm reacted without hesitation.
Lightning surged through him, sharp and immediate, but it didn’t drive the darkness back. Instead, it met it and held, the two forces pressing hard against each other without giving way.
Kael’s breath caught as the pressure between them built rapidly, both forces locking into place. "Ariana," he said, quieter now, forcing the word out through the strain.
Her expression didn’t change, but her grip tightened. The darkness surged.
It climbed from her arm into his chest, spreading fast enough to make his muscles lock as it moved. Kael forced himself to stay upright, his hand closing around her wrist as he tried to steady her even while the connection burned through him.
Behind him, Mira moved quickly. "Break it," she said sharply. "Now."
Kael didn’t.
He couldn’t.
Ariana’s fingers trembled against him, her grip uneven like she was fighting something inside herself at the same time. "Kael..." she said again, and this time the echo in her voice cracked slightly.
"I’m here," he answered immediately.
Her eyes flickered. For a brief moment, something in them broke through.
Then the darkness surged again, stronger this time.
The ground cracked beneath them as the force between them exploded outward. Kael felt it tear through him, not just around him, and his body jerked as the pressure pushed past what he could control.
Mira reacted instantly, silver light slamming into the connection between them. It didn’t break it, but it slowed the spread enough to keep it from taking over completely. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
"Kael!" she snapped. "You’re letting it in!"
"I know," he said through clenched teeth.
"Then stop!"
He didn’t stop, even as the strain built in his chest. Ariana’s grip hadn’t loosened, her fingers still locked around him with just enough strength to matter. And somewhere beneath the darkness, he could feel i, that she was still holding on.
The clearing shook again as Kyrindor stepped forward, his presence pressing harder against the domain. The ground steadied beneath them, roots tightening under the surface as he forced the space to hold.
"It is linking through him," Kyrindor said.
"Of course it is," Vaelor replied calmly. "That is what he is for."
Kael’s head snapped toward the shadows, anger cutting through the strain. "I’m not yours."
Vaelor didn’t move.
"You were never yours to begin with."
The words hit, but Kael didn’t let them settle. Instead, he forced his storm forward, lightning surging across his chest where Ariana’s hand pressed as he pushed back against the darkness spreading into him. The clash built rapidly, pressure rising until the ground beneath them cracked again.
She gasped as the pressure shifted, her grip loosening just enough to break its hold on him. The moment it faltered, even for a second, Kael reacted, moving before the connection could lock back into place.
He grabbed her wrist and pulled her forward instead of away, breaking the balance of the connection between them. The force snapped violently as it lost its anchor, throwing the energy outward in a sharp burst.
Ariana cried out as the darkness recoiled.
Kael staggered but stayed upright, his chest burning where the connection had tried to spread. His breathing came hard and uneven, but he didn’t take his eyes off her.
Ariana dropped forward as the strength left her, her body giving out without warning. Kael caught her just before she hit the ground, pulling her in to keep her from collapsing completely. For a moment, everything around them went still.
Her weight settled against him, her body still trembling as the dark lines along her skin dimmed slightly. The black in her eyes flickered again, unstable but not fully gone.
"Ariana," he said, quieter now.
Her fingers twitched weakly against his arm, the movement barely there but enough to make him hold on tighter. Then her eyes opened again, still dark but not completely, the black flickering like something inside her hadn’t fully taken control.
"Kael..." she whispered, her voice unsteady, and the sound hit him hard enough to make his chest tighten. "I’m here," he said immediately, even as relief came too fast and too sharp to ignore.
Behind them, Mira didn’t relax. "This is not over," she said, her voice low but certain.
"No," Cassian agreed.
They both looked up.
Cassian had moved closer without anyone noticing, his presence cutting through the tension without pushing against it. He stood only a few steps away now, his gaze fixed on Ariana with sharp focus.
"You just made it worse," he added calmly.
Kael’s expression hardened as he looked at Cassian. "Explain," he said, the word low but edged with tension. Cassian didn’t answer immediately, his attention shifting instead toward the shadows as if measuring something unseen.
"Vaelor is not trying to take her anymore," he said at last. The statement hit harder than expected, and Mira went still while Kyrindor’s presence tightened across the clearing.
Kael’s grip on Ariana shifted slightly as he absorbed it. "Then what is he doing?" he asked, his voice tighter now. Cassian’s gaze returned to him, steady and certain. "He’s trying to complete it."
Silence settled over the clearing, heavy and suffocating as the meaning of those words took hold. Ariana’s fingers tightened weakly against Kael’s arm, and from the shadows, Vaelor’s voice came again, softer now, almost satisfied.
"Yes," he said, and this time, Ariana’s hand lifted slowly, not toward Kael, but toward the darkness.
