Ariana woke into silence, but it was not the kind that felt calm or empty. This silence pressed against her ears and her chest, heavy and wrong, like the world itself had stopped breathing. For a moment, she did not move or open her eyes, because something inside her already understood that this was not the same place. When she finally inhaled, the air felt colder than it should have been, stripped of anything familiar. There was no scent of earth, no trace of life, and no presence she could recognize. When her eyes opened, she was met with darkness, but not complete darkness. It shifted faintly, like something alive, and that alone made her chest tighten.

She pushed herself up slowly, testing the ground beneath her. It felt solid, but not natural. The surface was uneven in a way that did not belong to anything real, too smooth in some places and fractured in others, like something had been destroyed and put back together without care. She turned, searching for anything that made sense, but there was nothing. No light, no movement, no voice.

"Kael," she said quietly.

Her voice did not carry. It disappeared the moment it left her lips, swallowed by the space itself. Ariana froze as that realization settled in. That was wrong.

Everything about this place was wrong.

"I did not choose this."

"No."

"You answered."

The deeper current stirred at those words, and Ariana felt it immediately, that quiet reaction she could not ignore. Her jaw tightened.

"I rejected you."

"You resisted."

"That is not the same thing."

"No."

The figure moved closer, and Ariana stayed where she was, refusing to step back.

"You are still here."

"That does not mean I belong to you."

"No."

Ariana narrowed her eyes slightly. "Then what does it mean?"

The figure stopped in front of her, close enough now that she could feel something from it. It was not pressure or force. It was something else. Recognition.

"You belong with what you carry."

"I am not finishing anything for you."

"You already started."

"No."

"You chose."

Ariana did not hesitate this time. "I chose him."

The reaction was immediate. The darkness shifted sharply, unstable for the first time, and something in the space changed in response to her words.

"Say it again."

Ariana held its gaze. "I chose him."

Pain surged through her chest as the deeper current reacted violently, but she did not move. She held her ground, even as her body tensed under the force.

"You still reach for something that is no longer there," the figure said.

"That does not mean it is gone."

"It is."

The certainty in those words struck harder than anything else, because she had felt it break. That moment was still clear in her mind, the snap, the emptiness that followed. Still, she forced herself to remain steady.

"I still choose him."

The deeper current surged again, stronger this time, and her knees almost gave, but she held herself upright.

"I am not."

"You are."

"Then what are you?" the figure asked.
