Chapter 38
The portal glowed in the sky, bright and steady. The light looked calm, but Ariana could feel the power inside it, sharp and aware, like something watching her from the other side. She stood at the edge of the cliff, staring at it, knowing there was no turning back now. No more running, no more waiting.
Behind her, the mountain had gone quiet again. Dragons stood across the cliffs, their massive bodies still but alert, their eyes fixed on her. Even without speaking, their presence felt like silent support, steady and unshaken. It made the choice feel heavier, not easier.
Kael stepped closer beside her, his gaze fixed on the portal. "You really plan to go through that," he said, his voice calm but tight beneath the surface. Ariana didn’t look away. "Yes."
Kael crossed his arms, his expression hardening slightly. "You know it’s a bad idea." Ariana nodded once. "I know."
"They can trap you," he added. His voice lowered, more serious now. Ariana’s fingers tightened at her side. "I know."
Kael let out a slow breath, frustration slipping through. "You’re not making this easy." Ariana finally turned to him. "I’m not trying to."
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The wind moved around them, carrying the fading heat of battle, but the tension between them stayed. The bond pulsed again, stronger than before, no longer unfamiliar but steady and real. Ariana lifted her hand to her chest, feeling it clearly.
"It feels different now," she said quietly. Kael followed her movement. "The bond."
She nodded slowly. "It’s stronger. Clearer." Kael didn’t look surprised. "Yeah. I can feel it too."
Ariana hesitated before speaking again. "If something happens to me..." Kael cut her off immediately. "Nothing is happening to you."
She frowned slightly. "You can’t promise that." Kael stepped closer, his voice quieter but firm. "I can try."
She studied him, already knowing the answer before asking. "You’re coming, aren’t you." Kael smirked faintly. "Of course I am."
Ariana shook her head. "No. You’re not." Kael didn’t move. "Yes. I am."
"This is not your fight," she said, more firmly now. Kael’s expression shifted, more serious. "It became my fight the moment they pointed at you."
Ariana felt her chest tighten. "They’ll see you as a threat." Kael shrugged. "They already do."
"You could get hurt," she said quietly. Kael met her gaze. "So could you."
Ariana didn’t respond right away. She looked away briefly, then let out a quiet breath. "Fine."
Kael’s smirk returned, softer this time. "Good." The tension between them didn’t disappear, but it settled into something steadier.
Behind them, the Dragon King stepped forward, his shadow stretching across the cliff. His presence carried weight, grounding the moment in something real. "This path is dangerous."
Ariana looked up at him. "I know." The dragon’s gaze didn’t soften. "The council does not forgive easily."
Kael folded his arms. "Yeah, we noticed." The Dragon King continued, "You will be judged."
Ariana nodded slowly. "I expected that." The dragon lowered his head slightly. "Then you must be careful."
"I will," she said. The portal pulsed brighter behind them, its light spilling across the cliff. The Elder’s voice came from within it, calm and distant.
"Time is limited."
Kael glanced at Ariana. "That’s our cue." She nodded once, steadying herself.
Together, they walked toward the portal. The light grew stronger with every step, and the air pressed against her chest. It felt like walking toward something that already knew her.
Ariana didn’t slow down. She stepped forward. And crossed.
For a moment, everything shifted. The ground beneath her feet felt unstable, like it wasn’t fully real, and the air pressed in from every direction. Her senses struggled to adjust, like the world had changed its rules.
Then it settled. The mountain was gone. The sky had disappeared.
They stood on a wide stone platform surrounded by endless space. There was no horizon, no ground beyond the platform, only vast light stretching in every direction. Everything felt unnatural, like a place that existed outside the world.
Large stone structures floated in the distance. Pillars, archways, and fragments of something ancient hung suspended in silence. Nothing moved, but everything felt alive.
"This place feels wrong," Ariana said quietly. Kael scanned the surroundings. "Yeah. I don’t like it."
Dozens of figures stood across the platform, silent and watching. Their presence pressed against the air, not violently, but constantly. It felt like standing in front of something that had already judged her.
At the center, the Elder stood waiting. "You have arrived."
Ariana stepped forward, Kael beside her. The Elder’s gaze shifted briefly toward him. "You brought the wolf."
Kael shrugged. "I go where I want." The air tightened slightly, like a line had been crossed.
Ariana spoke. "You asked me to come." The Elder nodded once. "I did. Now you will answer."
Ariana lifted her chin. "I already told you. I am not your enemy." The Elder stepped forward, his presence pressing harder.
"That is not for you to decide."
Ariana felt her power stir beneath her skin. "Then what is this?" she asked. The Elder stopped in front of her.
"This is judgment."
The word settled heavily in the air. Kael’s voice turned cold. "We’re not staying for that."
The Elder ignored him completely. "Your existence has already changed the balance." Ariana didn’t back down. "I helped restore it." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
A subtle shift moved through the council. Some adjusted their stance. Others leaned forward, watching more closely.
"Or you made it worse," the Elder replied.
Ariana held his gaze. "Then let me show you." He studied her. "You would prove it."
"Yes."
The Elder stepped back slightly. "Then do it." Ariana took a slow breath and closed her eyes.
She remembered the sanctuary. The warmth. The steady presence beneath everything. Guide it. Don’t force it.
When she opened her eyes, golden light spread beneath her skin. The air around her grew warmer, controlled and steady. Kael didn’t move, but his focus sharpened completely.
Ariana lifted her hand, and the golden energy gathered, fluid and responsive. She focused on balance, not power, not force, but something deeper. The light spread outward slowly.
The platform beneath her began to glow faintly. The pressure in the air shifted. It became easier to breathe.
The council felt it.
Several of them reacted, subtle but clear. Even the Elder’s expression changed, just slightly. Ariana lowered her hand. "This is what I am."
Silence followed.
Then a new voice cut through it.
"Not exactly."
Ariana turned. A man stepped forward from the shadows, his presence immediately different. He felt deeper, heavier, like something hidden beneath the surface.
Kael stiffened instantly. Ariana felt it too.
Something was wrong.
The man smiled slightly. "And that is the problem." The air shifted again, colder now.
The balance Ariana created began to weaken. It didn’t collapse, but something pushed against it.
He stepped closer, his gaze locked onto hers. "Show them everything."
Ariana frowned. "What do you mean?"
His smile didn’t change. "Not just the light." His voice lowered slightly.
"Show them what happens... when balance breaks."
Ariana’s chest tightened.
Because for the first time, her power didn’t feel completely calm anymore.
Something deeper moved beneath it.
And the council was watching.
