Chapter 37
The mountain did not stay quiet for long. After the vampires and witches left, the air remained heavy, as if something unseen still lingered just beyond the horizon. Ariana stood near the center of the cliff, her gaze fixed on the distant sky where dark clouds stretched slowly outward like a gathering storm. Even without seeing anything clearly yet, she could feel it pressing closer.
"They’re not hiding anymore," she said quietly.
Kael stood beside her, his attention locked in the same direction. There was nothing relaxed about him now, even if he looked calm at first glance. Every part of him was alert, tracking every shift in the sky, and Ariana could feel it through their bond. "No," he said. "They’re not."
Behind them, the Dragon King shifted slightly, his massive wings settling as his gaze turned outward. "The council gathers its strength."
Ariana turned toward him, unease tightening in her chest. "How many are there?"
"Enough to challenge every bloodline," the dragon replied.
Kael let out a quiet breath. "That sounds like a problem."
Ariana frowned, her thoughts narrowing. "They’re supposed to protect balance."
"They protect what they believe is balance," the Dragon King said.
Ariana looked down briefly, her fingers curling slightly at her side. "That’s not the same thing."
"No," Kael said. "It’s not."
The wind picked up again, stronger now, carrying a chill that had nothing to do with the weather. Above them, the dragons shifted formation, spreading wider across the sky as their movements became more deliberate. They were no longer circling. They were preparing.
"They feel it too," Ariana said.
"They do," the Dragon King replied. "War is coming again."
Kael rolled his shoulders once, tension settling into his stance. "Of course it is."
Ariana let out a quiet breath, exhaustion still lingering beneath her skin. "I was hoping for at least one quiet day."
Kael smirked faintly. "You got about an hour."
"That doesn’t count."
"It’s something."
The silence that followed felt thin, like something stretched too far. Ariana’s voice lowered slightly as her thoughts shifted toward what came next. "If the council comes... will all the bloodlines follow them?"
Kael considered it briefly, then shook his head. "Not all."
She looked at him. "Then what happens?"
"They choose sides."
Ariana felt her chest tighten at that. "And if they choose against me?"
Kael didn’t hesitate. "Then we fight."
She studied him for a moment, searching his expression. "You say that like it’s simple."
"It is," he said quietly. "Just not easy."
The weight of everything pressed down on her again. The dragons, the council, the war that refused to end. For a moment, she wished she could step back from it, just for a second.
"I’m not ready for this," she admitted.
Kael stepped closer, his voice steady. "You don’t need to be ready."
She frowned slightly. "That doesn’t make sense."
"You just need to stand."
"That’s it?"
"That’s it."
The bond between them pulsed again, stronger this time, and Ariana lifted a hand to her chest without thinking. It felt different now, deeper and more solid, like something anchoring her in place.
"I can feel it more," she said.
"The bond," Kael replied.
She nodded slowly. "It’s stronger."
"It is."
Ariana hesitated, unease flickering beneath the surface. "What does that mean?"
Kael met her gaze. "It means we’re more connected."
"And if something happens to one of us?"
His voice didn’t waver. "It affects both of us."
Ariana swallowed. "That’s... a little terrifying."
Kael shrugged slightly. "It’s also useful."
Despite everything, she almost smiled.
Before she could respond, a sharp warning call cut through the sky. Both of them looked up instantly. The clouds twisted unnaturally, and the air rippled as if something was forcing its way through from the other side.
Ariana felt it immediately. Stronger than before. Heavier. Controlled.
"That’s not normal," she said.
"No," Kael replied. "It’s not."
The Dragon King stepped forward, his voice lowering. "They are here."
Ariana’s heartbeat picked up. "So soon."
The air in front of the mountain cracked like glass under pressure. A thin line of light appeared, then widened slowly into a tear. It didn’t explode outward. It opened with precision, controlled and deliberate.
Kael’s posture tightened. "That’s not a normal entrance."
The tear expanded, and light poured through it, sharp and blinding against the dark sky. Figures stepped through one by one until there were dozens of them, their movements smooth and perfectly measured.
They wore long dark robes marked with ancient symbols. Their presence wasn’t chaotic like the Abyss. It was colder than that. Controlled. Certain.
"The council," Ariana said quietly.
They did not rush. They did not speak. They simply arrived and watched. At the center stood one figure, taller than the rest, his presence pressing against the mountain without effort.
Kael’s jaw tightened. "I don’t like him."
Ariana didn’t look away. "Who is he?"
"One of the Elders," the Dragon King said.
The Elder stepped forward, and the moment his gaze locked onto Ariana, the entire mountain seemed to still.
"You have caused enough disturbance."
Silence fell instantly. Even the dragons above held still.
Ariana stepped forward, her voice steady despite the pressure building around her. "I didn’t start this."
The Elder’s eyes narrowed slightly. "But you continue it."
Kael moved beside her. "That goes both ways."
The Elder ignored him completely. "The Fifth Blood was meant to remain extinct."
Ariana felt the words hit, but she didn’t step back. "And yet I’m still here."
The air tightened further.
The Elder raised one hand slowly. "We will not repeat the mistakes of the past."
Ariana’s power stirred beneath her skin. "What mistake?" she asked.
His voice lowered. "Allowing your kind to exist."
This time, the reaction wasn’t just hers. Above them, dragons growled low, the sound rolling across the sky.
Kael’s eyes flashed gold. "That’s not happening."
The Elder finally looked at him. "A Storm Wolf stands against the council."
Kael didn’t move. "Get used to it."
The tension sharpened, close to breaking.
Ariana stepped forward again, her power rising slightly, steady and controlled. "I’m not your enemy."
The Elder studied her. "That remains to be seen."
Then he spoke.
"Come with us."
Ariana froze.
Kael’s voice turned cold instantly. "No."
The Elder didn’t react. "This is not a request."
Ariana’s heart pounded harder now. "And if I refuse?"
"You will be considered a threat to all bloodlines."
The words settled heavily.
Ariana looked at Kael. Then at the dragons. Then back at the council.
For a moment, she almost said no. Not out of fear, but because she understood exactly what she was walking into.
She took a slow breath.
"I’ll go."
Kael turned sharply. "No."
Ariana met his gaze, steady despite everything. "I need to."
The bond between them tightened suddenly.
Kael’s jaw clenched. "That’s a trap."
"I know."
"Then don’t walk into it."
Her voice softened slightly. "If I don’t... they’ll bring the war here."
Kael didn’t answer.
Because he knew she was right.
Ariana turned back to the Elder. "I’ll go."
The Elder gave a single nod. "Wise."
But there was no approval in his expression.
"Prepare yourself."
Behind him, the portal widened, light shifting as if it were alive. Ariana stood still for a moment, the wind brushing past her, the mountain silent behind her.
Then she stepped forward.
The air grew colder with every step. The light stretched around her, pulling her in.
She didn’t look back. But she felt it.
Kael. The dragons.
Everything she was leaving behind.
Just before she crossed the threshold, the bond pulsed again, stronger than ever.
A warning. Or a promise.
Ariana stepped into the light.
And the moment she crossed through...
she knew she had just walked into something she might not walk out of.
