Chapter 147
The clearing did not fully settle after Augustus left, but the violence that had torn through it was gone. The air moved again, slow and uneven, carrying the scent of broken earth and crushed leaves, while the trees stood at unnatural angles where the force had bent them.
Somewhere deeper in the forest, something small moved, cautious and distant, as if the world itself was testing whether it was safe to return.
Ariana noticed it first.
Her shoulders lowered slightly as she drew in a breath that did not hurt, her body finally beginning to release the tension it had been holding for too long. Her hand remained pressed against Kael’s chest, not because she needed to steady herself anymore, but because she wasn’t ready to let go.
Kael didn’t move.
He stood where he was, his arm still around her, his breathing slower now but not completely steady. The storm inside him had quieted, but she could feel it there, beneath the surface, contained but not gone.
"You’re still holding it," she said quietly.
Kael let out a slow breath, his hand shifting slightly over hers. "Yeah."
"That’s not the same as being okay."
"No," he said. "It isn’t."
The honesty in his voice made something in her chest tighten.
For a moment, neither of them moved. The clearing stretched around them, quieter now, but not empty. Light filtered unevenly through the branches above, broken where the trees had shifted, casting long shadows that moved slightly with the wind.
Ariana tilted her head back just enough to look at him properly.
"You didn’t lose it," she said.
Kael’s jaw tightened slightly. "I almost did."
"But you didn’t."
"Not this time."
The way he said it wasn’t reassurance.
It sounded like a warning.
Ariana studied him for a moment, then let out a small breath that almost sounded like a laugh, though there was no humor in it. "You’re not very good at celebrating small victories."
Kael’s gaze flickered down to her. "That didn’t feel small."
"No," she said softly. "It didn’t."
Her fingers tightened slightly against his shirt, the fabric still warm from the heat of his skin. She hesitated for a second, then shifted just a little closer, closing the space that had returned between them without thinking about it too much.
Kael felt it immediately.
His arm tightened around her again, instinctive, but this time the movement was controlled, careful in a way it hadn’t been earlier.
"You should probably step back," he said, though he didn’t let go.
Ariana frowned slightly. "You don’t sound like you mean that."
"I mean it," he said. "I’m just not doing it."
That almost made her smile.
"Good," she said.
Kael looked at her for a second longer than he should have, something shifting in his expression before he forced it back under control. "You don’t make this easy."
"I’m not trying to."
"That’s obvious."
The air between them settled again, but this time it wasn’t heavy with pressure.
It was quiet.
Ariana lowered her gaze slightly, her fingers tracing the edge of his shirt without really thinking about it. "When you stepped back," she said, her voice softer now, "back there... was that because of me, or because of everything else."
Kael didn’t answer immediately.
His hand tightened slightly at her back, not enough to pull her closer, but enough to show he had heard the question. When he spoke, his voice was lower, more honest than before.
"Both," he said.
Ariana nodded slowly, though something in her expression shifted at that answer. "That’s not very reassuring."
"It wasn’t meant to be," he replied.
She let out a quiet breath. "At least you’re consistent."
Kael’s gaze didn’t leave her. "You want the reassuring version."
"No," she said. "I want the real one."
He held her gaze for a moment, then gave a slight nod. "The real one is that I don’t trust what happens if I stop thinking about it."
Ariana’s fingers stilled against his chest. "And me."
"You’re part of it."
"That’s not what I asked."
Kael exhaled slowly. "You make it worse," he said.
The words should have hurt.
They didn’t.
Ariana tilted her head slightly, watching him. "Explain."
"You make it harder to step away," he said. "Harder to keep control. Harder to pretend this is something I can ignore."
The honesty landed heavier than anything else he had said.
Ariana felt her chest tighten, but she didn’t look away. "Good," she said quietly.
Kael frowned slightly. "That’s not a good thing."
"It is for me," she replied.
He studied her, trying to decide if she was serious.
She was.
Ariana shifted her hand slightly higher against his chest, her fingers brushing just below his collarbone. "Because none of that has anything to do with the bond," she said.
Kael’s expression tightened just slightly.
"You still think it does," she added.
"I think it complicates it."
"It doesn’t create it," she said.
The clearing fell quiet again.
A breeze moved through the broken trees, lifting a few loose leaves and carrying them across the ground between them. Somewhere far off, a bird called once, tentative, as if the world was slowly remembering itself.
Kael looked down at her hand, then back at her face. "You’re sure about that."
"Yes."
"Even now."
"Especially now."
The certainty in her voice didn’t waver.
Kael’s hand moved slightly, sliding from her back to her arm, his fingers curling just enough to keep her there without forcing it. "You don’t think any of this is... influencing you."
Ariana shook her head slowly. "I think everything is influencing me," she said. "But I also think I know the difference between something forced and something I choose."
"And this," he said.
She met his gaze fully. "This is me."
The words settled into him in a way that made his breath catch slightly.
For a second, neither of them moved.
Then Kael lifted his hand, slow enough that she could have stepped away if she wanted to.
She didn’t.
His fingers brushed lightly against her face, pushing a strand of hair back from her cheek. The touch was careful, almost hesitant, like he was testing whether he was allowed to do it at all.
Ariana’s breath slowed.
"You’re still thinking," she said quietly.
"I always am."
"That’s your problem."
"It’s also the reason you’re still standing."
She smiled faintly at that. "Fair."
The moment stretched.
Not tense.
Not forced.
Just... there.
Ariana’s gaze dropped briefly to his lips before she looked back up at him again. "If you’re going to keep thinking," she said, "then I’m going to stop you."
Kael’s brow furrowed slightly. "That doesn’t sound reassuring."
"It’s not."
She didn’t give him time to overthink it.
Ariana stepped forward.
The distance disappeared completely as she reached up and kissed him.
It wasn’t rushed.
It wasn’t desperate.
It was steady, certain, and real in a way nothing else had been.
For a split second, Kael didn’t move.
Then something in him gave.
His hand tightened at her waist, pulling her closer as he responded, the control he had been holding shifting, not breaking, but changing into something else. The storm didn’t surge. The Lycan didn’t rise.
It stayed.
Watching.
Ariana felt it, the difference in him, the way he didn’t lose control this time, didn’t pull away, didn’t fight it.
He chose it.
When she finally pulled back, her breathing was uneven again, but not from fear this time.
Kael didn’t let go.
His forehead rested briefly against hers, his voice lower than before. "That didn’t help."
Ariana smiled slightly. "It wasn’t supposed to."
His hand tightened slightly at her waist. "You’re going to get me in trouble."
"You already are."
For a moment, everything felt almost normal.
Then the weight of everything waiting for them settled back in.
Kael lifted his head, his expression sharpening slightly as his gaze shifted toward the forest beyond the clearing. "The wolves aren’t going to accept this."
Ariana followed his gaze. "No."
"They’ll force it."
"They can try."
Kael looked back at her. "You don’t sound worried."
"I am," she said. "I just don’t plan on letting that change anything."
He studied her for a second, then gave a small nod. "Then we don’t give them the chance."
Ariana’s fingers tightened slightly in his shirt. "What does that mean."
Kael’s expression didn’t soften. "It means we choose before they do."
The words settled between them.
Not as a question. As a decision.
And this time, neither of them stepped back.
