Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers

Seraphina Sutton’s sweet voice came through the phone, but Wren Wynter hung up without a second thought.

A man and a woman, alone together this late at night—it was hard not to be suspicious about what they were up to. Besides, Kaden Xavier never liked anyone touching his phone, not even her.

But Seraphina Sutton was the exception.

If she hadn’t run into Nathaniel Quinn today, Wren would have never known the real reason Kaden had married her.

Wren gave a small, bitter laugh at how she had just humiliated herself. Then, she deleted the number that was etched into her memory.

The dream is over!

"Wren, who were you calling? Kaden?" Serena Nash asked, propping her chin on her hand lazily as she watched Wren return.

"No." Wren took a deep breath and denied it. "Is Hugh Hale coming to get you?"

"He’s on a business trip." The flicker of disappointment in Serena Nash’s beautiful eyes vanished in an instant, so fast that Wren didn’t even notice anything was amiss.

Joy Lynch leaned against her, drunk. "Wren, stop loving that scumbag Kaden. He’s really not worth it."

"Okay, I’ll listen to you."

Once she made a decision, she wouldn’t look back, even if her heart was still full of love for him.

Wren took Joy Lynch and Serena Nash home before catching a cab back herself. When she arrived home, the house was completely dark.

Kaden hadn’t returned yet.

He’s probably staying at Seraphina’s place!

The thought of Kaden using that excuse to... do whatever with Seraphina all those days and nights made Wren want to throw up.

They’re both so disgusting!

She was about to head to the bedroom when, a second later, a hand pulled her into an embrace.

"Where have you been? Why are you back so late?" Kaden hugged her from behind, his questioning tone laced with discernible anger and restraint.

"It’s none of your business." Wren struggled to break free from Kaden’s hold as a wave of nausea rose in her throat.

"How is it none of my business? We’re husband and wife!"

Kaden reached out to grab Wren, but she had already anticipated his move. She took a step back, and a sharp pain shot through her ankle. Her face paled. Biting her lower lip, she turned, trembling, and limped toward the stairs.

"Not for much longer."

So now he remembers they’re married? Why didn’t he think of that when he was with Seraphina?

Wren didn’t want to waste her breath arguing with Kaden. She gripped the banister, desperate to get back to her room.

"Do you have to make a scene? Before Asher Lynch died, the person he was most worried about was Seraphina. What’s wrong with me taking care of her a little more?"

Taking care of her all the way to her bedroom. If Asher knew, he’d probably jump right out of his coffin.

"Nothing’s wrong." Wren shot him a cold glance over her shoulder before turning to continue toward her room.

Suddenly, an excruciating pain shot through her ankle again. As a physiological reaction, her legs gave out uncontrollably, and her body fell backward.

Kaden was stunned. He lunged forward and caught Wren in his arms. The strong smell of alcohol on her instantly enveloped him. He frowned instinctively. "You’ve been drinking?"

Wren came to her senses. Ignoring the pain in her ankle, she pushed Kaden away and admitted it freely, "Yes."

"You know I..."

Before he could finish his "don’t like it," Wren cut him off. "Just because you don’t like something, does that mean I have to give up what I like? In that case, I don’t like you taking care of Seraphina Sutton. Can you give that up?"

"Those are two different things." Kaden’s expression was thunderous, and his deep voice was laced with a profound chill.

"Then there’s nothing more to say." Wren didn’t want to argue anymore. She just wanted to go to her room and sleep.

She has to work tomorrow!

Unexpectedly, Kaden swept her up into his arms and strode toward the bedroom.

"Put me down! Kaden!" Wren flailed her fists, resisting fiercely. She used to love the woody scent on Kaden, but ever since it started mingling with Seraphina’s perfume, it just made her feel sick.

And she didn’t want him touching her with hands that had touched someone else.

"Kaden, you bastard!"

Kaden didn’t respond. He walked into the bedroom and placed her on the bed with a less-than-gentle motion. Wren immediately tried to sit up, but he held her down by the shoulders.

"Don’t move. Your ankle needs to be treated." Kaden knelt on one knee and reached out to examine it.

Wren pulled her foot back, her gaze sharp. "I said, I don’t need your help."

Kaden looked up at her, his brow tightly furrowed. "Wren, do you really have to be like this?"

Wren turned her face away. "Please get out. I need to rest."

"You!" Kaden was left speechless by her words, anger surging in his chest. He took a deep breath, turned, and went into the bathroom, returning with a cold towel. "Put this on it."

Wren didn’t take it, just stared at him coldly. "I said, I don’t need it."

The two of them were at a standstill for a few seconds before Kaden simply placed the towel on her ankle himself.

Wren tried to pull away, but he held her calf firmly. His hand was warm, its heat transferring through her thin stockings, but all Wren felt inside was ice.

"Tell me if it hurts." Kaden’s voice was uncharacteristically gentle.

Wren didn’t answer, closing her eyes and feigning sleep. She didn’t want to look at him or have any interaction with him at all.

Kaden silently applied the cold compress for over ten minutes. He wanted to speak several times, but seeing Wren’s tightly closed eyes and cold profile, he swallowed his words.

After changing the towel a few times, the swelling in her ankle subsided a little. Kaden gently set her foot down, stood up, and watched her for a moment from the bedside.

Wren’s breathing was even, as if she had really fallen asleep.

A flicker of emotion crossed his eyes, but in the end, Kaden left the room. He believed that when Wren mentioned divorce, she was just throwing a tantrum.

The next morning, Wren Wynter woke up on time. Her head was still throbbing, perhaps from the alcohol, but her ankle felt much better.

Even if it was thanks to Kaden, she felt no gratitude.

Wren first took a hot shower in the bathroom, changed into a fresh set of clothes, and showed up at the medical center right on time.

As soon as she entered the office, she heard two nurses whispering to each other.

"Did you hear? This morning, a flight attendant got bumped into by an intern in the hallway! Captain Xavier saw it happen, and I heard he flew into a rage and had HR fire the intern!"

"Oh my god, and Captain Xavier is usually such a calm person..."

"Exactly! Now the whole company is gossiping that Captain Xavier and that flight attendant are secretly dating."

"What’s the flight attendant’s name?"

"I think it’s Seraphina Sutton. They say she’s about to be promoted to purser. The love story of a purser and a captain! I totally ship it!"

Halfway through the sentence, the nurses saw Wren come in and immediately fell silent, stopping their discussion.

Wren walked to her desk with a placid expression and began organizing the day’s medical records. She had heard every word of their conversation, but she felt nothing at all.

At nine-thirty, the office door was pushed open.

Kaden Xavier walked in, supporting Seraphina Sutton.

Seraphina had one hand clutched to her lower abdomen, her face pale. Her other hand gripped Kaden’s arm tightly.

"Wren, Seraphina got bumped into this morning. Can you check her out?" Kaden’s voice was uncharacteristically tense.

"Mm," Wren responded in a professional tone, gesturing for Seraphina to lie down on the examination bed.

During the examination, Seraphina would occasionally let out a soft hiss of pain. Kaden stood to the side, his worried expression one that Wren rarely ever saw.

The sight stung her eyes. She took a sharp breath, removed her stethoscope, and said coldly, "The fetal heartbeat is normal, and there’s no obvious external injury. If you’re still worried, you can go to the hospital for an ultrasound."

"Thank you, Dr. Wynter," Seraphina said in a gentle voice. "If you hadn’t helped me keep this a secret, I wouldn’t have had a chance at the purser position for years to come."
