Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers

"Yes."

Kaden carefully placed her in the copilot’s seat of the plane and buckled her seatbelt himself. His voice, for once, softened. "Wren, I know you’re upset about the wedding anniversary. I apologize. I’ll be more mindful in the future."

So even now, Kaden Xavier still thought she was just throwing a tantrum over a wedding anniversary.

Any faint trace of warmth in her heart vanished. Wren Wynter’s lips curled into a mocking smile as she looked at him calmly.

"And how are you going to be more mindful? The next time Seraphina Sutton calls, will you tell her you have to ask me first? Or will you just bring me along to help you take care of her?"

The plane began to taxi down the runway. Kaden Xavier had been adjusting the controls, but he frowned at her words. "Wren, I sincerely apologize to you. Why do you have to be so harsh? Besides, Seraphina is pregnant right now. Her situation is delicate..."

"Then tell me, when is her situation not delicate?" Wren Wynter slowly clenched her fists, struggling to control her emotions and keep her voice from trembling. "She needs you to take care of her while she’s pregnant, so what about when she gives birth? What about after the baby is born? You’re accompanying her to prenatal checkups as a ’family member’ now. Will there come a day when you’ll have to attend parent-teacher conferences for her child as the ’father’?"

Every question she asked was like a knife twisting in Kaden Xavier’s heart. He opened his mouth to say something, but found he couldn’t make any promises.

Because Seraphina Sutton truly did need help.

Asher Lynch had once saved his life. He was Kaden’s best friend, and both he and Seraphina Sutton were friends Kaden had known since his time at the Air Force Academy.

No matter what, he couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.

The plane lifted off the ground and ascended slowly. Wren stared at his silent profile, her smile as faint as a snowflake. "See? You can’t answer my questions. What’s the point of talking about ’the future’?"

"These are two completely different things. Can you stop being so unreasonable? My patience has its limits." Kaden Xavier switched to autopilot and turned his head to stare at Wren Wynter, his voice tinged with a barely perceptible annoyance. "I’ve already apologized to you, and I’m trying my best to make it up to you. What more do you want?"

The plane had now reached a high altitude. The intense feeling of weightlessness made Wren’s heart sink to rock bottom. She closed her eyes for a moment, then spoke, enunciating each word clearly. "I want a divorce." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"I told you, do not mention the word ’divorce’!"

Kaden Xavier slammed his fist against the cockpit wall, his face contorted with fury. All trace of his usual refined demeanor was gone. "Wren Wynter, when are you going to learn to be more sensible? If you keep acting so ridiculously..."

"If you don’t agree to a divorce, I’ll report you and Seraphina Sutton to the Aviation Authority for violating aviation law—for flying while concealing a pregnancy."

Wren Wynter cut Kaden Xavier off in a flat voice. Her icy tone made the man flinch. He shot to his feet, his expression dark, and stared at her intently.

"Wren Wynter, are you threatening me? You want to divorce me so badly that you’d resort to such measures to force my hand?"

"I’m not forcing you. I’m just so tired." Wren Wynter gave a brittle, weary smile. "Kaden Xavier, our marriage has been a complete disaster for a long time now. Wouldn’t it be better to part ways amicably before we come to despise the sight of each other?"

A complete disaster. Despising the sight of each other.

Amidst the roar of the engines, those words were like an invisible hand, squeezing Kaden Xavier’s heart so tightly he could barely breathe.

He stared blankly at Wren Wynter’s cold expression, suddenly realizing that this time, she might actually be serious.

She wasn’t throwing a tantrum or being petty. She really wanted to divorce him.

The plane climbed into the stratosphere and stabilized, but the atmosphere inside the cockpit plunged to a freezing point.

After what felt like an eternity, Wren finally heard Kaden Xavier’s voice.

"Fine. Since you’re so set on a divorce, let’s make a bet." His face was grim, his voice hoarse and rough. "We’ll separate for one month. During that time, we won’t see or contact each other outside of work. We’ll both cool down."

Kaden Xavier sat back down in the pilot’s seat and began to slowly descend the plane.

"Wren, if after one month, you still feel the same way, I’ll sign the divorce papers immediately."

He was just so sure that she was madly in love with him. That’s why he proposed this bet with such confidence.

Wren Wynter nodded in agreement. "Okay. I’ll move out as soon as we get back."

"There’s no need." Kaden Xavier hadn’t expected her to agree so readily. His angry gaze rested for a moment on her swollen ankle before he spoke in a cold voice. "You stay at the house. I’ll move out."

Right. If he moves out, he can live with Seraphina Sutton. Seeing each other day and night... wouldn’t that make it even more convenient to take care of her?

Wren Wynter let out a sneer, which was her tacit agreement to the proposal.

Kaden Xavier could tell from her expression that she had misunderstood him again. But the words of explanation—’ I’m not going to live with Seraphina’—somehow wouldn’t come out.

Forget it. Let her misunderstand.

Kaden Xavier thought to himself, a flash of stubborn confidence in his eyes. This way, Wren will truly understand what it feels like to lose him. She’ll realize just how important he is to her.
