"I was waiting for you."
"Waiting for me?" Wren Wynter’s lips twitched into a smile. "Waiting for me to do what? To watch how attentive you are to Seraphina Sutton?"
"Wren, I’m glad you’re jealous, but can’t you just..."
He must have been neglecting her recently. That’s why she’s throwing a tantrum.
"Kaden Xavier, there’s a limit to your narcissism," Wren Wynter cut him off, so angry she almost laughed. "I’m exhausted. Please, let me go, and let yourself go as well."
With that, she turned and walked away quickly.
"Kaden, I’m sorry... I didn’t know you were waiting for Dr. Wynter. I thought you were waiting for me..." Seraphina Sutton had gotten out of the car at some point, a guilty look on her face.
"I have something to do today, I can’t take you home." Kaden Xavier’s voice was weary. "Just take a taxi back yourself."
Seraphina Sutton bit her lower lip. "Okay... You go on then. Be careful."
Kaden Xavier drove to the villa.
Wren Wynter had just gotten home and was about to go upstairs when she heard the door open.
"Wren, we need to talk."
Wren Wynter turned around. "Fine. Let’s talk."
Kaden Xavier sat down across from her. "What you saw today was a misunderstanding. I was waiting for you. Seraphina got in the car on her own."
"It doesn’t matter anymore." Wren Wynter shook her head. "Kaden Xavier, let’s get a divorce. I’m not joking, and I’m not throwing a tantrum. I’m being serious, and I’m perfectly rational."
"I refuse," Kaden Xavier said, his voice heavy. He didn’t believe Wren Wynter could stop loving him. For seven years, she had loved him so much—enough to give up everything for him.
How could she just stop loving him on a whim?
Kaden Xavier leaned in to kiss her, trying to prove she was just being difficult.
Wren Wynter turned her head aside.
Kaden Xavier’s kiss landed on her cheek.
"Let go of me!" Wren Wynter struggled forcefully.
Kaden Xavier held her tightly. "Wren, stop lying to yourself. You still love me, I know it."
"The moment I brought up divorce, I stopped loving you!"
Wren Wynter raised her hand and slapped him hard across the face. The crisp sound echoed through the living room.
A red handprint immediately appeared on Kaden Xavier’s face. He pressed his tongue against the inside of his cheek, turned his head, and stared intently at Wren Wynter, a mixture of emotions swirling in his eyes, making his thoughts unreadable.
Wren Wynter’s eyes welled with tears. "Kaden Xavier, don’t make me hate you."
The words "hate you" pricked Kaden Xavier’s heart like sharp thorns, making it tremble.
Just then, his phone rang.
She didn’t need to guess. She knew it was Seraphina Sutton. This wasn’t the first time Seraphina had called late at night and pulled Kaden Xavier away.
She has no sense of boundaries!
But this time, Kaden Xavier didn’t answer.
The phone kept ringing.
The noise grated on Wren Wynter’s nerves, and her head began to throb. Her words were sharp. "What’s wrong? Not picking up? Aren’t you afraid something’s happened to her? Afraid you can’t answer Asher Lynch? After all, you’re the only one she can turn to. Without you, it’s a wonder she and her child can even survive."
"Wren Wynter, must you always speak with such venom? Since when did you become so cruel?" Kaden Xavier’s eyes turned cold as he scolded her.
Her? Cruel?
Wren Wynter suppressed the acrid feeling rising in her chest. "I’ve always been this way. If you can’t stand it, then hurry up and sign the divorce papers."
Kaden Xavier didn’t answer. He was looking down at a message from Seraphina Sutton, his brows furrowing tighter and tighter.
Seraphina: Kaden, my stomach hurts so much...
"You need to calm down. We’ll talk later."
With that, he strode away.
The door slammed shut behind him.
A faint smile touched Wren Wynter’s lips, one filled with self-mockery. This was the man she had loved so much she’d lost herself.
No matter how passionate or how tense things were between them just a second before, he would abandon her and leave the moment Seraphina Sutton called.
And then stay out all night.
Even when she was feeling unwell during her period, he would still choose Seraphina. He’d say it was about Asher Lynch’s only living legacy.
The next morning, Wren Wynter was woken up by Joy Lynch.
"Wren, wake up!"
Wren Wynter opened her eyes. Her throat was so hoarse it felt like it was smoking, and her whole body felt weak, as if she were coming down with a fever. "Joy, what are you doing here?"
"You have the nerve to ask! You weren’t picking up my calls, so I came over to check on you, and I found you passed out on the floor, burning up!"
Joy Lynch touched her forehead. "You’re still feverish. Did you get caught in the rain yesterday?"
Wren Wynter shook her head. She only remembered feeling dizzy after Kaden Xavier left yesterday, and then...
"I’m taking you to the hospital," Joy Lynch said, helping her up. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
"No need. I’ll be fine if I just take some medicine."
"No way! We have to go to the hospital!" Joy Lynch insisted, leaving no room for argument.
Just as they reached the front door, it opened.
Kaden Xavier looked exhausted, with faint dark circles under his eyes. He froze for a moment when he saw Wren Wynter being supported by Joy Lynch. "Wren, what’s wrong?"
"None of your business." Wren Wynter turned her face away.
Joy Lynch glared at Kaden Xavier. "Captain Xavier, excuse us. I need to take Wren to the hospital."
"To the hospital? What happened to her?"
"She has a fever, and she fainted. What do you think happened?" Joy Lynch’s tone was hostile. "Do you think this would have happened if you hadn’t abandoned her here all alone yesterday?"
The color drained from Kaden Xavier’s face. He looked at Wren Wynter. Her face was indeed pale, her lips colorless. "I..."
"Move. And don’t follow us. Wren has me, and that’s enough." Joy Lynch pushed him aside and helped Wren Wynter into her Beetle.
Kaden Xavier stood frozen in place, watching them leave with his brows tightly furrowed. He shouldn’t have left Wren here alone yesterday.
Kaden Xavier returned to the aviation department, but his mind was elsewhere all day. He was distracted during meetings and while reviewing documents. He called his assistant in. "Tell me, how do you pacify an angry woman?"
The assistant paused, stunned. "Mr. Xavier, are you referring to..."
"I just... I made her angry, and I want to apologize."
The assistant asked cautiously, "Is it, Miss Sutton?"
Kaden Xavier said, "No."
"Then..."
"Never mind who it is. Just tell me what to do."
The assistant thought for a moment. "Send flowers. Women like flowers."
"Flowers?"
"Yes, red roses are best. They represent love and an apology."
Kaden Xavier seemed lost in thought. "What else?"
"Say some nice things, admit you were wrong, and promise it won’t happen again."
"Alright, I get it. You can go now."
"Yes, sir."
Kaden Xavier leaned back in his chair, mulling over his assistant’s words. His brow was furrowed, and his hands, resting on the armrests, were clenched into tight fists.
Will she really forgive him if he sends flowers?’
In the afternoon, Kaden Xavier left work early and went to the hospital, but he arrived to find it empty.
Wren Wynter had already been discharged and had gone home.
Kaden Xavier went to a flower shop, bought flowers, and returned to the villa. Wren Wynter was in the kitchen pouring a glass of water, and when she saw the flowers in his hands, all the color drained from her face. "You... what are you doing with those flowers?"
"They’re for you." Kaden Xavier held the flowers out to her. "I remember you like flowers."
Wren Wynter took a step back. "Get them away."
Kaden Xavier took a step forward. "Alright, Wren, stop messing around! I was wrong yesterday. I shouldn’t have left you all alone. I..."
He suddenly noticed her breathing becoming ragged and a red rash starting to appear on her face.
"Wren, what’s wrong?"
Wren Wynter clutched her neck, struggling to breathe. "The flowers... pollen..."
It finally dawned on Kaden Xavier. He hurriedly threw the flowers out the door and supported Wren Wynter. "Where’s your allergy medication?"
Wren Wynter pointed to the bedroom. Kaden Xavier rushed in and found the allergy medication in the nightstand drawer.
He poured a glass of water and helped Wren Wynter take the medicine, but her symptoms didn’t improve. Her breathing grew more labored, and the rash on her face spread.
"I’m taking you to the hospital!"
Kaden Xavier scooped Wren Wynter into his arms and rushed downstairs.
...
A doctor gave Wren Wynter emergency treatment.
"It’s a severe pollen allergy. If you’d been any later, she could have gone into shock." The doctor looked at Kaden Xavier, his tone sharp. "You’re her husband, right? How could you not even know she’s allergic to pollen?"
Kaden Xavier hung his head, unable to say a word.
Wren Wynter lay on the hospital bed with an IV in her hand. Her face was still pale, but her breathing had stabilized.
Two trips to the hospital in one day. Must be a record. And the same person is to blame for both.
Kaden Xavier sat by the bed, a rare look of guilt on his face.
Wren Wynter opened her eyes. The moment she saw him, her gaze turned icy. "Kaden Xavier, let’s just get divorced sooner rather than later! I can’t go on like this."
How ridiculous! After all these years together, he didn’t even know what she was allergic to.
Kaden Xavier’s voice was soft but firm. "Wren, I know you’re angry, and I’ll be more careful in the future. I hope you won’t bring up divorce again. I will not agree to it."
"It’s not up to you." Wren Wynter closed her eyes. "I’ll file for it tomorrow."
"The bet isn’t over yet."
Wren Wynter lost all desire to talk. She kept her eyes shut tight and turned her head away.
Seeing her fall silent, Kaden Xavier actually felt relieved. The tension in his jaw gradually eased. She only keeps bringing up divorce because she knows the bet isn’t over. She doesn’t really want to divorce him.
"I’ll send something else later to make it up to you. I have things to do tomorrow, so I won’t be able to stay with you. You get some rest."
After speaking, Kaden Xavier glanced at the silent, uncommunicative Wren Wynter and left.
Wren Wynter couldn’t have been happier that he wasn’t coming back. The "things to do" he mentioned were, without a doubt, just about keeping Seraphina Sutton company.
Wren Wynter hadn’t expected that she had, in fact, guessed correctly.
