Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers

"Miss, Housekeeper Lynch made a late-night snack. Would you like some?"

Butler Chandler’s inquiring voice came from outside the door.

He was clearly worried Wren Wynter hadn’t eaten and had specifically asked Housekeeper Lynch to make something.

Not wanting to worry those who cared for her, Wren Wynter composed herself, opened the door, and accepted the snack from Butler Chandler with a smile.

"Thank you, Uncle Chandler. I was just getting hungry."

She really hadn’t eaten much today. She’d planned to grab a bite after leaving the Yates Family’s home, but she’d been delayed by the matter with Shaun Quinn.

’Why am I thinking about him again?’

Wren Wynter was very annoyed with herself.

His confession tonight had been quite a shock, and she couldn’t get his face out of her head.

’Forget it. I’ll just finish this quickly and go to sleep.’

She quickly finished her snack, took a shower, and was in bed early.

She tried to force herself to sleep, but after half an hour, she wasn’t the least bit drowsy.

’Insomnia is torture!’

Resigned, Wren Wynter sat up. She decided to go over Old Madam Xavier’s autopsy report again, hoping she might find something new.

She took out the autopsy report and studied the photos carefully, looking them over and over again.

Just then, her hand froze. Her eyes widened, staring intently at one of the photos.

It was Old Madam Xavier’s hand.

There were no signs of a struggle on her clothes, not even wrinkles, but there was a lot of dirt.

Her hand was clenched into a tight fist. Perhaps because so much time had passed, her fingers had turned a grayish-blue.

Even so, Wren Wynter could still see a speck of pink visible outside her palm.

It didn’t look like fabric from her clothes. It looked more like...

’A button!’

With this new discovery, Wren Wynter couldn’t sit still any longer.

But she knew it was too late now. If she wanted to follow up, she would have to wait until morning.

The moment dawn broke, Wren Wynter called Kaden Xavier.

On the other end, he picked up quickly, as if he hadn’t slept much either.

"Kaden Xavier, are you up?"

Kaden Xavier, who had been suffering from insomnia ever since Wren Wynter moved out, was pleasantly surprised to get her call.

He replied hurriedly, "Yes. Is something wrong, Wren?"

"I’m coming to your office. I’ve found a new clue."

Without waiting for Kaden Xavier to reply, Wren Wynter hung up.

She couldn’t wait another moment.

She wanted to find Grandma’s killer as soon as possible.

When Wren Wynter arrived at the Xavier Group, Kaden Xavier was already in his office.

He had only washed up briefly before rushing to the company, looking uncharacteristically disheveled.

"What’s the clue?"

Seeing Wren Wynter, Kaden Xavier poured her a glass of warm water before asking.

Wren Wynter took a sip to wet her throat, then opened the autopsy report and placed the photos tucked inside on the desk.

"Look here. It’s obvious Grandma was clutching something. It’s very likely something from the killer."

Wren Wynter’s voice was filled with excitement, and her enthusiasm was so infectious that Kaden Xavier’s spirits lifted as well.

"Let’s go. To the police station."

The two of them went to the police station once again, looking for the officer in charge of Old Madam Xavier’s case.

The officer in charge was a middle-aged man who looked to be in his forties. Seeing Wren Wynter and Kaden Xavier, he stood up to greet them. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"Are you two here to ask about the case’s progress?"

"No, Officer Chandler. We’ve made a new discovery. Look here."

Wren Wynter explained the clue she had found to Officer Chandler.

With a solemn expression, Officer Chandler took Kaden Xavier and Wren Wynter to see the forensic examiner.

"A button? We didn’t find any missing buttons on the deceased’s clothing at the time. Are you sure you’re not mistaken?"

"No, what I mean is, Grandma was clutching a button. Since all the buttons on her clothes are accounted for, it must have come from the killer."

"Bring out the body. We need to see it."

Officer Chandler glanced at the forensic examiner.

The examiner nodded, turned to open the cold-storage locker, and wheeled out Old Madam Xavier’s body.

Because the case was still open, Old Madam Xavier could not yet have a funeral. She could only be laid to rest once the investigation was concluded.

The forensic examiner carefully inspected both of Old Madam Xavier’s hands and found that her right hand was indeed clenched tightly. Because so much time had passed, it was extremely difficult to pry open.

"To get this button out, I might have to use some special techniques. Mr. Xavier, Mrs. Xavier, do you consent?"

"Agreed."

Kaden Xavier didn’t hesitate for a second.

Having received consent, the examiner wasted no more time. He used his special techniques to pry open Old Madam Xavier’s hand and retrieved the object from her right palm.

Just as Wren Wynter had expected, it was indeed a button.

However, trying to find a killer with just a single button was still like finding a needle in a haystack.

The examiner took the button for testing and found that the only fingerprints on it belonged to Old Madam Xavier.

Wren Wynter’s face fell with disappointment. All her hopes turned to dust in that moment.

Her body, which had been running on excitement and adrenaline for so long, suddenly went limp.

Kaden Xavier caught her just in time, asking worriedly, "Wren, are you okay?"

Wren Wynter shook her head. "Probably just low blood sugar."

She took the button from the examiner’s hand and studied it closely, her mind racing to recall any clues related to it.

"This button... I feel like I’ve seen it somewhere before."

Kaden Xavier, who was supporting Wren Wynter, frowned. It looked vaguely familiar to him.

His words immediately caught the attention of Wren Wynter and Officer Chandler.

"You’ve seen it?"

"I must have," Kaden Xavier said, his lips tightening. "It looks like a button from a luxury clothing brand. And only that specific design uses this type of button."

He took the button from Wren Wynter’s hand.

The button was pink, with a gilded lily decorating the center and three small diamonds adorning the edge.

"I just remember it’s related to a luxury brand. I can’t recall the specifics right now. I’ll contact you when I remember."

"Alright. But today wasn’t a total loss," Officer Chandler analyzed. "We can now deduce that this person has high-end spending habits and is very wealthy. We can narrow our target to the elite families of The Capital."

Wren Wynter nodded in agreement.

"You two should head back for now. I’ll contact you if there are any new developments."

"Okay. Thank you for your trouble, Officer Chandler."

"It’s my duty."
