Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers

"You don’t want Grandma to get well, do you!" Seraphina Sutton batted her eyes innocently, delighting in Wren’s misfortune.

"Shut up!" Wren Wynter’s expression darkened as she lifted her eyes to fix Seraphina Sutton with an unwavering stare. "Do you really think I’m afraid to touch you? Even with Kaden Xavier backing you, it won’t do you any good."

’The only reason Nathaniel Quinn would hurt my aunt is because Seraphina Sutton goaded him into it.’

’If Grandma weren’t here, I would’ve slapped her right across the face.’

Seraphina Sutton’s eyes trembled, reflecting Wren’s cold expression. "Dr. Wynter, why are you targeting me like this? I haven’t done anything. Besides, I was just speaking the truth. You’re being so aggressive. Grandma doesn’t like being in the hospital; is it wrong for her to want to go home?"

’Haven’t done anything?’

’Has she not done enough already?’

Wren scoffed.

’From a doctor’s standpoint, she naturally wanted the patient to remain under observation for a few more days. But there were always foolish family members who insisted on defying medical advice, which would ultimately lead to disaster.’

’Who the hell did Seraphina Sutton think she was? She wasn’t even a close friend or relative of Grandma’s.’

’It wasn’t her place to butt in at all.’

"Kaden Xavier, you can either throw her out right now, or I’m leaving."

’Wren couldn’t stand the sight of this damn schemer for another second.’

"Dr. Wynter, why are you forcing Kaden to choose? Even if you’re trying to make more money for the hospital, you shouldn’t act like this! Besides, hospital beds are scarce. This one should be freed up for someone who truly needs it!"

Before Kaden Xavier could speak, Seraphina Sutton cut in, her face a mask of self-righteousness.

’She spouts words of fairness and selflessness, but how good can the heart of a woman who would even sacrifice her own child be?’

"Kaden Xavier, choose," Wren said, her eyes fixed on him.

Kaden Xavier hesitated for a moment before saying, "Wren, why don’t you visit the old family home every day? We have medical equipment there anyway. If..."

He was hoping he could see Wren every day. Besides, home was indeed more comfortable than the hospital, which would be better for his grandmother’s recovery.

"Okay, I’ll leave. Grandma, you get some rest," Wren cut in, not wanting to drag this out any longer.

’I must have been out of my mind to make Kaden Xavier choose between me and Seraphina Sutton.’

Just then, Old Madam Xavier grabbed Wren’s wrist. The old woman’s benevolent face had darkened, and a barely suppressed anger was visible.

"Helen, escort Miss Sutton out."

"Grandma," Seraphina Sutton began anxiously, shooting a pleading glance toward Kaden Xavier.

Kaden Xavier paid her no mind, his eyes seemingly only for Wren.

Seraphina Sutton’s nails dug deep into her palms, but she had no choice but to rein in her emotions.

"Miss Sutton, please come with me."

Helen Sawyer escorted Seraphina Sutton out of the hospital room, but seeing the younger woman standing helplessly outside the door, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of pity. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

"You should head home for now. Ma doesn’t want to see you, and you being here will only make her angrier."

"Godmother..." Seraphina Sutton’s eyes reddened.

’She didn’t understand what she’d said wrong. Who didn’t like people wishing them a long and healthy life?’

"Alright, stop crying. Listen to me and go home for now."

With those words, Helen Sawyer turned and closed the door to the room.

Seraphina Sutton stood at the entrance, glaring resentfully at the closed door, her face ashen with fury.

’Wren Wynter, you’re really something else!’

’To think you could coax Old Madam Xavier into backing you so unconditionally.’

’It’s just sucking up to an old woman, right?’

’There’s plenty of time. Whatever Wren Wynter can do, I can do too!’

Seraphina Sutton snorted coldly and turned to leave.

「Inside the hospital room.」

Old Madam Xavier grasped Wren’s hand and pleaded, "Wren, please let me go home, won’t you?"

Although she had been unconscious, she had heard bits and pieces of their conversation.

She knew she didn’t have much time left, and she wanted to spend it in a familiar place.

"Grandma, please, just listen to me. If something happens after you go home... even with all the medical equipment there, what if we miss the critical window for treatment?" Wren’s voice was choked with emotion.

’She didn’t want to lose another person who loved her.’

"Oh, Wren, didn’t the doctor just say that I’m not in any serious danger? That I just need to get plenty of rest? I promise you, I’ll go to bed early every day, get more exercise, and eat a healthy diet. Please, just let me go home."

"No, Grandma. I can’t agree to that," Wren said, shaking her head.

’Grandma almost died from that stroke. If something else were to happen at home, she’d truly be beyond saving.’

Old Madam Xavier let out a long sigh. "Oh, my dear old man," she murmured, "it looks like I’ll be seeing you soon. It’s just a shame I won’t be able to pass away in our home. Don’t you blame Wren for it; it’s my own body that’s letting me down."

To get discharged, Old Madam Xavier was even bringing up the late Elder Xavier.

Looking at the old woman’s childish antics, Wren didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Kaden Xavier stepped forward and asked tentatively, "Wren, how about we just let Grandma go home? I’ll move back to the family estate for a while. With me keeping an eye on her, nothing should happen."

"Are you the doctor here? You think just because you say it’ll be fine, it’ll be fine?"

Wren shot Kaden Xavier a look, but inwardly, she was moved.

’Grandma has lived in that house for the better part of her life.’

’She must have sensed that her time is running out. Perhaps letting her live out her remaining days peacefully at home would be a good thing.’

"Then you can come over every day to check on Grandma."

If it weren’t for the earnest expression on Kaden Xavier’s face, Wren might have thought he was saying it on purpose just to see her.

After careful consideration, Wren agreed.

Early the next morning, Kaden Xavier came in person to take Old Madam Xavier home.

Wren and Finn Wynter walked with them to the hospital entrance.

"Grandma, you have to rest quietly once you get home. Sit in the courtyard when you feel like it, stick to a light diet, and absolutely no high-fat foods."

"Alright, I know."

Wren was still worried. Old Madam Xavier’s health was so fragile now; she was like a piece of paper that could be blown over by the slightest breeze.

"Starting tomorrow, I’ll come check on you every day. So don’t even think about doing anything you’re not supposed to behind my back."

It was only in front of Old Madam Xavier that Wren would let a hint of her softer, more girlish side show.

Old Madam Xavier nodded happily, her gaze unconsciously drifting to Finn Wynter.

’He’s been right by Wren’s side this whole time.’

’Could he be one of Wren’s suitors?’

"Ma, the car is here. Let’s get you inside."

Helen Sawyer hurried over and took Old Madam Xavier’s arm from Wren.

The question on the tip of Old Madam Xavier’s tongue was cut short. She simply smiled, waved at Wren, and gestured for her to head back.

"Grandma, I’ll watch you get in."

"Alright, alright. Oh, you dear child."

Old Madam Xavier turned and, with Helen Sawyer’s help, got into the car.

Kaden Xavier walked up from behind her. "Wren," he said, "if you’re free this evening, why not come to the estate for dinner with Grandma?"

"I..."

"Sure. If we’re free, I’ll bring Wren over. Take care, Mr. Xavier." Finn Wynter protectively pulled Wren behind him, his tall frame stepping between her and Kaden.

’He could see right through Kaden Xavier’s little scheme. The man was just trying to use Wren’s soft spot for Old Madam Xavier to get what he wanted.’

’How shameless!’

Kaden Xavier’s face fell. He swept his gaze over Wren and Finn, but surprisingly, he said nothing more and walked away.

Wren stepped out from behind Finn. "Brother, you didn’t need to do that. We’re at a hospital; it’s not like he could do anything to me."

"Wren, you still haven’t moved on from him, have you?"
