- Chapter 1: On Their Wedding Anniversary, He Accompanied Someone Else to a Prenatal Checkup
It was Wren Wynter and Joy Lynch.
Fearing she might throw a tantrum in front of everyone, Kaden Xavier offered an uncharacteristic explanation. "Seraphina just tripped. I was helping her up."
As he spoke, he let go of Seraphina Sutton’s hand.
Just as he thought. Wren is still jealous. There’s no way she could actually bring herself to divorce him.
At this thought, Kaden Xavier grew even more certain that his earlier suspicion was correct.
Seeing this, Seraphina Sutton clenched her fists, a flash of jealousy in her eyes.
Joy Lynch scoffed.
Wren Wynter glanced at Kaden Xavier, then at Seraphina Sutton. Her expression was calm—unnervingly so. "Captain Xavier, we’re here to conduct a first-aid drill for the interns."
Her cool and distant voice betrayed no emotion.
"Alright." Kaden Xavier suppressed the delight welling up inside him. He cleared his throat and turned to the interns, his presence impossible to ignore. "Everyone, fall in."
"Sir!"
The interns quickly formed two lines.
Wren Wynter rolled up the sleeves of her white coat, her gaze sweeping over everyone. "Today’s drill will be performing CPR on an aircraft. Who would like to be the volunteer for the demonstration?"
Felix Vance immediately shot his hand up and walked over to Wren Wynter with a grin. "I will! I’ll do it!"
Kaden Xavier’s brows knitted, his deep voice laced with a hint of danger. "Felix Vance, get back in line."
"Kaden, I’m just trying to help."
"No need. I’ll be the volunteer," Kaden Xavier stated authoritatively.
Felix Vance was utterly baffled. Was Kaden always this committed to things like this? Besides, was it just his imagination, or did the look Kaden had just given him seem like he wanted to kill him?
Wren Wynter didn’t speak. She opened the first-aid kit, took out a pair of disposable gloves, and put them on.
"Lie down."
"Okay." Kaden Xavier compliantly lay down on the floor.
Wren Wynter knelt on one knee, placed her interlocked hands on Kaden Xavier’s chest, and slowly said to the crowd, "First, determine if the patient is conscious."
As she spoke, she leaned down, getting close to Kaden Xavier’s face—a face so handsome it seemed divinely sculpted.
"Sir, can you hear me?"
Her warm breath brushed gently across his face, making his skin both itch and tingle. Involuntarily, Kaden Xavier’s throat felt dry, and he felt a stir of desire.
"I can hear you."
Seeing the sudden shift in the color of his eyes, Wren knew all too well that it was a sign of his arousal. Before they started fighting, they’d rarely gone more than two days a week without being intimate.
When it came to that, Kaden Xavier had a strong appetite.
Suppressing her emotions, Wren Wynter straightened up and began to unbutton his uniform shirt. "The patient is conscious, but his breathing is weak."
Her fingers were cool, and when they touched Kaden Xavier’s skin, he couldn’t help but shiver.
Seraphina Sutton stood to the side and watched, her expression growing darker as she twisted the hem of her clothes between her fingers.
As Wren’s hand settled on his chest, Kaden Xavier could feel its warmth and pressure. Her expression was focused, her gaze serious, just like when she used to take care of him.
Gazing at her profile so close to his, Kaden Xavier suddenly had the urge to reach out and touch her.
But he held back.
"Oh!" Seraphina Sutton clutched her forehead, and her body swayed. "I feel so dizzy..."
With that, she crumpled limply to the ground.
"Seraphina."
Kaden Xavier shot up, moving so quickly that even Wren was shocked. She had never seen him act so anxious, not even when she was sick.
That heart-wrenching pain resurfaced, and Wren had to take a deep breath to force it back down.
"Seraphina, wake up!" Kaden Xavier lightly patted her cheeks. But Seraphina Sutton didn’t react at all. "Felix Vance, contact the base for an ambulance!" he ordered.
"Okay."
Joy Lynch, who had been watching from the sidelines, finally had enough. She strode over and knelt beside Seraphina Sutton.
"Captain Xavier, Wren and I are doctors, you know. What’s the point of going to a hospital? Let me take a look."
This pathetic little act... she’d seen it a thousand times before. Only a moron like Kaden Xavier would fall for it.
Kaden Xavier hesitated for a few seconds. "Fine."
Joy Lynch lifted Seraphina Sutton’s eyelid, checked her pulse, then leaned close to her ear and whispered so only the two of them could hear.
"Seraphina Sutton, if you don’t wake up right now, I’m going to stick you with a needle right under your nose. It’s going to hurt. A lot."
Seraphina Sutton’s eyelashes trembled.
Joy Lynch caught the movement and nonchalantly started counting down. "Three... two..."
Just as she was about to say "one," Seraphina Sutton opened her eyes and said weakly, "I... what happened to me?"
Joy Lynch’s lips curled into a sneer. "Miss Sutton, with a constitution as delicate as Delia Lynch’s, I really don’t think you’re suited for flying."
Halfway through her sentence, she turned to Kaden Xavier, her words pointed. "What do you think, Captain Xavier? After all, if something were to happen mid-air, the company would have to bear full responsibility!"
Kaden Xavier naturally understood the implication behind Joy Lynch’s words, and he wasn’t surprised she knew about Seraphina Sutton’s pregnancy.
He knew Joy Lynch didn’t like him.
If it weren’t for Wren, he wouldn’t tolerate her repeated provocations.
Seeing Kaden Xavier appear to be considering Joy Lynch’s words, Seraphina Sutton’s expression shifted. She quickly pleaded tearfully, "Kaden, I’m fine. It was just low blood sugar because I skipped breakfast. Don’t worry, I won’t let it affect my work. I have nothing left; I can’t lose my job, too."
"I think Miss Sutton would be better suited for showbiz," Joy Lynch retorted, not attempting to hide her disdain for the contrived performance.
"Dr. Lynch, why are you targeting me? Did I do something wrong?" Seraphina Sutton demanded, her eyes welling with tears. "Or could it be... You like Kaden, so you see me as a rival?"
At that, the corner of Joy Lynch’s mouth twitched violently. Is this woman dense?
Even Wren felt an urge to laugh.
"Do you think everyone likes to go after taken men, just like you? I’m not interested in being a homewrecker," Joy Lynch scoffed.
Seraphina Sutton was left speechless. Her face stiffened, and her eyes grew even redder.
"Joy Lynch," Kaden Xavier snapped, his eyes darkening.
"What? Am I not allowed to tell the truth?" Joy Lynch glared back, refusing to give him any ground.
The retort gave Kaden Xavier a headache. If he weren’t afraid of upsetting Wren, he would have had the Lynch Family send her away long ago.
Seeing him flustered put Joy Lynch in a great mood.
"Wren, if you’re done with the demonstration, go handle your business. I’ll take care of things here." She wasn’t about to let her best friend’s eyes be polluted by this scene.
"Okay." A warm feeling swelled in Wren’s heart. Even though she didn’t need anyone to protect her, she couldn’t help but be moved watching Joy Lynch stick up for her.
"Dr. Wynter!"
Seeing she was about to leave, Kaden Xavier quickly called out to her.
Wren Wynter didn’t break her stride.
"Dr. Wynter is just as gorgeous as the rumors say," Felix Vance said, nudging Kaden Xavier’s arm, his eyes following her wistfully. "Kaden, do you know her well? How about you introduce me?"
Kaden Xavier’s tone grew cold. "What are you trying to do?"
"Go after her, of course," Felix Vance said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "Dr. Wynter is beautiful and professional. She’s just my type!"
An involuntary shadow fell over Kaden Xavier’s expression. "You’re not her type."
"How would you know? Kaden, help me out."
"No."
"Why?" Felix Vance was puzzled, then his eyes widened. "Kaden, don’t tell me... you’re into Dr. Wynter too? Then you and Seraphina Sutton..." He glanced at Seraphina Sutton, who was still leaning nearby. "If you ask me, Seraphina Sutton is a classic pick-me-girl. She was obviously faking it just now."
"Felix Vance!" Kaden Xavier sharply cut him off.
Felix Vance flinched. "Alright, alright, I’ll shut up. But seriously, Kaden, the way you act around Dr. Wynter is really weird."
Kaden Xavier ignored him, his gaze fixed on the direction Wren had gone, his heart churning with irritation.
After the drill, Kaden Xavier remained on edge. He finished work early and drove to the aviation medical department, waiting downstairs for Wren to get off. He wanted to have a proper talk with her.
Unexpectedly, someone else got there first.
Seeing Kaden Xavier’s car, Seraphina Sutton’s eyes lit up. "Kaden, are you waiting for me?"
She pulled open the passenger side door and was about to get in.
Kaden Xavier was stunned for a moment. "Seraphina, I..."
Seraphina Sutton had already gotten in and buckled her seatbelt. "Thank you so much for today. If it weren’t for you, I don’t know what I would have done."
Just then, Wren Wynter came out of the aviation medical office. She saw Seraphina Sutton sitting in the car, her steps faltered for a moment, then she turned and walked in another direction.
Why did she run into this shameless pair everywhere she go!
"Wren!" Kaden Xavier hurriedly got out of the car and chased after her.
Wren walked very fast.
"Wren, wait!" Kaden Xavier caught up to her and grabbed her wrist. "Let me explain."
"There’s nothing to explain." Wren shook his hand off, her face impassive. "Who you drive home is your business, Captain Xavier."
