At first, Yamato felt confused when he saw Zixu vanish along with the summoning talisman. After checking several times, he finally accepted the fact—Zixu had disappeared into thin air.
"Then there's only one possibility... That kid must have performed the Kuchiyose no Jutsu (Summoning Technique) in reverse and sent himself somewhere else..." Yamato muttered, grabbing his hair as he paced back and forth, his mouth tightly pursed.
"Reverse Summoning? What does that even mean? Where is Zixu now?" Aburame Hatsuizumi clenched her fists nervously. She had never seen a summoning technique that could transport a human like this.
Hyuga Chinano looked thoughtful. Her sharp gaze fell on the summoning array on the ground, which had not completely faded. After a brief pause, she attempted to explain to Hatsuizumi:
"Normally, when using Kuchiyose no Jutsu, we connect with summoned beasts in another dimension and bring them into our world. But Zixu must have reversed the process, turning himself into the 'summoned creature' and teleporting to another dimension instead..."
Her brows furrowed deeper as she spoke.
Zixu wasn't the type to act recklessly. Though he had his quirks, this was... strange, even for him.
Yamato nodded seriously, a hint of melancholy in his tone.
"She's right. The Gyaku Kuchiyose no Jutsu (Reverse Summoning Technique) is unpredictable and extremely dangerous. The space between dimensions is unstable, filled with chaotic energy streams. Most shinobi would be torn apart by the pressure alone. Even if the teleportation is successful, there's no guarantee where they'll end up. And as for finding the way back... that's a whole different nightmare."
As he spoke, he slammed his thigh in frustration, biting his lip in self-reproach.
The massive, fearsome creature floating in the water tank nearby glanced at Yamato with an eerily knowing look, as if it had foreseen everything.
"Damn it... I was too careless. As a teacher, I should've noticed something was off right away. This was supposed to be a simple training session, but now... now I've let this happen on my watch." Yamato's expression darkened. "No, I have to report this to the Hokage. This whole mess is on me."
Standing beside him, Hyuga Chinano and Aburame Hatsuizumi struggled to process the fact that Zixu might be in serious danger.
Just as Chinano bit her lip, looking ready to explode, something unexpected happened.
The black summoning talisman, which had nearly faded from existence, suddenly pulsed with energy. Slowly, the sigil reconstructed itself, reforming into a fully restored summoning array.
This time, Yamato was taking no chances.
His instincts flared, and in an instant, he stepped in front of Chinano and Hatsuizumi, shielding them. Without waiting for the formation to activate, he clapped his hands together—forming a series of rapid hand seals.
"Mokuton: Jukai Heki! (Wood Release: Dense Woodland Wall!)"
Thick wooden stakes shot out from his arms, twisting and expanding with unnatural speed. Within seconds, they wrapped around the formation, forming a cubic wooden cage—an impenetrable barrier.
Hatsuizumi watched from behind Yamato, stunned by the seamless execution of his Mokuton (Wood Release). Compared to her own struggles with hand seals, a veteran Jōnin like Yamato made it look effortless.
Meanwhile, Zixu was still mid-teleportation.
The journey had been... rough. At first, he had treated it like a casual sightseeing trip, admiring the floating chakra spheres along the way. But just as he neared the exit, he noticed something unusual.
A cage.
A yellow-green wooden barrier had formed at the summoning exit.
"What the hell?!"
Before he could react—
Poof!
A burst of white smoke filled the air.
Zixu appeared inside the wooden cage—his neck awkwardly wedged between two wooden bars.
A small black snake rested atop his messy red hair, its wide eyes staring at the cage in bewilderment.
Outside the cage, Yamato and the others, still on high alert, saw Zixu's familiar figure materialize.
Instantly, they rushed forward.
"Zixu! Where the hell did you go? Are you okay? And what's with this little black snake?!"
"Be more careful next time! If you mess up a summoning again, who knows where you'll end up?"
"I'm keeping an eye on you from now on. No more reckless techniques."
Yamato let out a deep sigh of relief. He never would have thought a simple Summoning Technique lesson could escalate into something like this.
He would need to be a lot stricter from now on—he couldn't let them cause chaos like this again.
The mysterious creature in the water tank gave another knowing glance, as if this outcome had been well within its calculations.
Zixu, meanwhile, studied everyone's reactions.
He quickly deduced that not much time had passed here since he performed the Reverse Summoning.
It made sense.
Most of his time in Ryūchi Cave had been spent in a dream-like state. His sense of time was hazy at best.
Taking a deep breath, he calmly explained his experience—though he carefully omitted any mention of Orochimaru or Ryūchi Cave.
Even if Konoha was aware of Senjutsu (Sage Techniques), revealing that he had a direct connection to Ryūchi Cave would put him under immediate surveillance.
He wasn't about to let that happen.
Orochimaru had once vaguely revealed in a casual conversation that, in his younger days, he and Danzo had conducted experiments on transplanting the Shodai Hokage's cells from living subjects.
It was clear that Konohagakure had never outright rejected human experimentation.
Zixu knew that fact all too well—and he had no intention of becoming a test subject trapped in a cold, sterile lab.
Taking a deep breath, he steadied his expression and spoke with unwavering confidence—lying as naturally as breathing.
"After I formed the hand seals, it felt like I was being summoned somewhere. There were all these floating energy orbs, but I had no idea where I actually was. Since I had nothing better to do, I just floated around and observed them. It was kind of interesting, actually. Oh, and I also ran into this little guy along the way..."
His words were flawless, and his face remained perfectly composed—zero hesitation, zero guilt.
"Then, all of a sudden, I felt a strong pull behind me. I just went along with it and got sucked back through the entrance that looked like a Summoning Technique. But during that process, something strange happened... There was this yellow-green energy blocking my return, and the next thing I knew, I was trapped in a wooden cage."
He carefully crafted his explanation, ensuring that it sounded logical while concealing any suspicious details.
Yamato and the others didn't question it.
As long as Zixu was unharmed, there was no point in overanalyzing the situation—for now.
"Well, as long as you're safe, that's what matters."
Yamato exhaled, trying to brush off his concerns.
"Now that all three of you have formed a Summoning Contract, this lesson has gone quite well," he continued, revealing his lack of experience as a proper instructor. Having spent most of his life in ANBU, his mission-oriented mindset was deeply ingrained. To him, this was nothing more than a basic Summoning Technique lesson.
Fortunately, his students were all mentally resilient and didn't need any time to recover from the earlier incident. Even Zixu, who had been the one trapped, simply dusted off the wood chips from his clothes and sat back down as if nothing had happened.
And so, the four shinobi and their four summoned creatures continued their lesson as if the entire fiasco had never occurred.
The large, fierce summon still exuded confidence.
The tiny cicada lay lazily in Aburame Hatsuizumi's palm.
The panda cub clung tightly to Hyuga Chinano's calf, its round eyes brimming with innocence.
Meanwhile, a thin, black snake, barely as long as a human forearm, rested atop Zixu's head like a lifeless noodle, occasionally flicking its tongue.
Yamato clapped his hands together, regaining their attention.
"Since all of you now have your own summoned creatures, let's go over the important details of the Summoning Technique (Kuchiyose no Jutsu, 口寄せの術)."
He scanned their faces before continuing, his tone serious.
"Don't underestimate Summoning Jutsu. Just because it's considered a low-level technique doesn't mean it's weak. In fact, even the Edo Tensei (Impure World Reincarnation, 穢土転生)—a technique that can bring the dead back to the living world—is classified under the Summoning Jutsu category."
Yamato deliberately glanced at their expressions as he mentioned Edo Tensei, but none of them reacted unnaturally. Satisfied, he resumed speaking.
"Summoned creatures are generally categorized into three main types:
1. Combat-type
2. Perception and analysis-type
3. Support-type"
He gestured toward Zixu's small black snake.
"Combat-type summons excel in direct combat. They are usually large and powerful, possessing various ninjutsu and physical abilities. However, they also tend to have violent tempers, and if they aren't trained properly from a young age, they can become dangerous—even turning against their summoner."
Yamato observed the three infant summons in front of him.
They were still in their early growth stages, so they weren't aggressive—yet. For now, their personalities seemed rather docile.
Pointing at the black snake, he said,
"This one is clearly a combat-type."
Zixu raised an eyebrow.
A combat-type?
He had used the snake as a beacon during his teleportation. Wouldn't that make it an auxiliary summon instead?
Yamato then turned to Aburame Hatsuizumi's cicada.
"Perception-type summons are different. Their combat abilities are negligible, but their sensory and intelligence-gathering skills are top-tier. Most perception summons are also capable of speech. In dangerous situations, their analytical abilities might even be more reliable than a human's."
Finally, Yamato pointed at Hyuga Chinano's panda cub, which was still clinging to her leg with teary eyes.
"And lastly, we have support-type summons. These creatures offer a balance between combat and perception abilities. They can assist their summoner in battle, provide enhanced sensory abilities, and even offer healing support."
He hesitated for a moment, glancing at the panda cub before concluding,
"The Iron-Eating Beast is... definitely a support-type."
At that moment, Yamato felt like the panda had stuck its tongue out at him in disapproval—but he had no proof.
"Now, keep in mind," he continued, "summons won't automatically listen to you just because you've formed a contract. You'll need to train them yourselves. And one more thing—it's best to only summon them during battle.
Normally, summoned creatures reside in their own dimension, and keeping them around outside of combat will drain your chakra."
His expression turned firm.
"And above all else—do not use Reverse Summoning recklessly."
He let that warning sink in before taking a sip of water.
"Alright. Any questions?"
The three students took a moment to process the large amount of information they had just received.
Aburame Hatsuizumi calmly jotted down notes, while Zixu, though not particularly focused, still absorbed the most important details.
Hyuga Chinano, however, was lost in deep thought.
She absentmindedly picked up the panda cub, holding it in her arms before speaking.
"Every jutsu has derivative techniques. If someone masters a basic technique to its absolute limit, theoretically, that should allow them to develop an even greater variation of it, right?"
Yamato instantly understood where she was going with this.
His expression hardened, and he cut her off immediately—his tone more serious than ever before.
"Theoretically? Yes. But the cost is too high."
His voice was firm, leaving no room for debate.
"Who would dedicate their entire life to mastering a single technique? Do you really think that's realistic? This world isn't kind to shinobi. Most of us don't even live long enough to die of natural causes."
His gaze darkened.
"Don't waste your time on impossible ideals. Without the right knowledge, there will never be a true qualitative breakthrough."
The room fell into silence.
For the first time, the weight of Yamato's words truly sank in.
