Chapter 16: Voice

Rebellion came out as the debut song of Ellipsis. It was the opening where the three members— Yang Yueran, Gu Weiyi and Chu Xining officially became an idol on stage.

In the video, they were introduced with the main concept— vigilantes. Feng Rouyun remembered that in the beginning of the music video, sounds of drums echoed as if beating with the same rhythm of one’s heart then to elevate the tension, sounds of horns were also added. The setting at first was in the endless desert where only fine sand can be seen. Then the large sun was suddenly covered with thick black clouds and a strong wind came which was very unlikely in a place like that.

Then the camera seemed to be caught by a small whirlpool of wind and the screen was covered by sand so that they couldn’t see what’s happening anymore.

The sounds from horns also stopped and only the heart-racing drums continued until the sand cleared the screen and they saw a large castle welcoming them. It was too huge but instead of luxurious and mostly classy, the castle seems to be abandoned. There are growing vines in every corner— but all was colored brown and withered. It looks dark and gloomy, as if a war just ended and left this place desolate.

The drone carrying the camera flies inside until a huge hallway is seen. It was all empty and cold.

The screen flash and a throne without anyone sitting was seen. There was only blood spilling everywhere and a crown embedded with jewelries and made of gold in the chair. And suddenly, a hand with stained blood appeared on the top rail of the throne. It slowly creeps downwards— from fingers to the full back of a hand. It was pale and slender, instantly attracting everyone’s attention.

Soon someone was revealed behind the throne. It was Gu Weiyi.

The young man was wearing full black— dark hooded cloak, leather gloves, leathered boots. He has heavy make-up and the dark eyeliner of him emphasizes the sharp look on his eyes. There was also a blood stain on his left cheek, giving a sense of wild and untamed spirit.

He stared straight at the camera and smirked, full of evil and wickedness before the official singing started.

This is also the time that Feng Rouyun began his performance.

"Wake up in day one

Where everything seems destroyed..."

The beginning of the song was actually the chorus but it was a bit lighter to sound from the future chorus.

In this one, the lyrics were about how mysterious people appear. They launched a bomb to the castle without any further warning, just like a normal sunny day but a flash of lightning appears, striking the peaceful world without any mercy.

"There’s a mirror

And what reflects was the darkness inside you..."

Rebellion is about how they begin their journey as someone who faces the truth— about the darkness and reality that everyone wanted to escape for.

A mirror where you cannot just see your own reflection but the real face behind the mask.

"You can call me monster

But this is my rebellion..."

As Feng Rouyun sings the first chorus, the atmosphere inside the room wavered and stifled gasps from surprise can be heard in the room.

"Is this really his voice? What a shame not to let anyone hear this!"

"Oh my! What the hell?!"

All their shocked stares went to the young man who was hanging his head a bit low while focusing on the lyrics on his hand as he sang.

Feng Rouyun’s voice is very different from the other members. It’s soft and a bit airy, just perfectly complimenting each other. Hearing it was like a soft plea rather than the aggressiveness that the group has. If Gu Weiyi sings this part with a message of letting the world see the truth within the darkness, he seems to convey something different.

It was like the sharp spikes revealing the soft edge— the loneliness behind the tough heart.

But even though he managed to express these emotions, it was still a bit weak, especially that even his voice is actually not stable enough.

They could hear the trembling at the beginning and the hesitation for every sentence he’ll sing.

And it just unfortunately worsens when the rap part begins.

"Here in the daylight, I stumbled upon... the truth... w-where even the sun couldn’t hide."

At first Yang Yueran and the other two just raised their eyebrows a bit when they heard him stumble and stammer on the first phrases. Maybe just like at the beginning, he could get through it.

"Hide it? No. Kill it? Never.

The innocence you were nev— now stained."

Now even his words were not the lyrics.

"Your soul was dead

Buried deep an— deeply and just.

How—"

"Enough."

His performance was abruptly interrupted by Yang Yueran who frowned when he kept on stumbling on the rap part. He looked more irritated now.

"If you can’t even do this part properly, how can you stay in the group? Ellipsis’s songs have rap for everything. The most basic thing you must have is rapping in this group." His voice contains sharp and harsh truths for the young man.

"I’ll tell you," Yang Yueran looked at Feng Rouyun directly in his eyes. "You won’t survive being in my group."

"!!!"

Everyone’s jaw dropped at how Yang Yueran didn’t even hesitate to say those words.

"...." Feng Rouyun didn’t say anything.

Seeing this, Gu Weiyi couldn’t help but scoff again. There he goes again on his pitiful face.

"I suggest that the company must give him more time to practice and adapt in the group. After all, this isn’t just about the group itself but for the business, isn’t it?" The tone on his voice carries another mock and it was unknown whether it was for the company or for the young man instead.

The company put him in the group without much thought, isn’t that also because of their pride and overestimation of Feng Rouyun? And there goes Feng Rouyun himself.

Gu Weiyi just thought he probably thought he could fit in right away.

Chu Xining stood up without a word but the glance he gave at Feng Rouyun says everything that he agreed to whatever the Yang Yueran and Gu Weiyi said before leaving the room.

"The company decided to push this new album as soon as possible, right?" Yang Yueran asked the Producer Na who subconsciously nodded.

"Then what about him?" Asking that follow-up question was like asking them how the album would be possible if Feng Rouyun’s ability is like this.

"This..." even the director looked hesitant and turned towards Ru Anyan.

Ru Anyan exhales a sigh of frustration, not just for this situation but also how the members treat Feng Rouyun.

"Feng Rouyun will do his best to catch up." Was all she could really say for now.

Gu Weiyi sneers silently and is about to add when the young man they’re talking about finally speaks to himself.

"I will do my best and not disappoint you the next time."

Everyone looked at Feng Rouyun. He was looking softly at them, not appearing mad at the words that the members threw at him.

The young man took a deep breath and in the next second, he suddenly made a deep bow in front of everyone.

"I apologize for this inconvenience."

"...." The room went silent seeing this.

Various expressions flash on everyone’s face, whether it was surprise, frustration, doubt, pity.

The future is actually unclear but one thing’s for sure, it’ll be hard especially for Feng Rouyun.
