"Kids, don’t play with fire or anything like that again, okay?" I warned my children.

Yesterday, I saw them bothering Scarlett, trying to convince her to give them some matchsticks.

They were probably just bored at home, and I knew they needed to start going to school soon.

For werewolves, we usually have schools for young pups, similar to kindergartens, where they learn about werewolves in a fun way, teaching them that wolves are their friends and helping them understand their nature.

I thought it would be good for my kids to start learning that early.

But there was a problem.

They were part lycan, and I wasn’t even sure if their lycan side would show.

That thought scared me sometimes.

What if others found out about them being lycan?

Werewolves never liked lycans, they always saw them as monsters.

And that worried me for my babies.

We were sitting at the breakfast table, and I was feeding my kids because I wanted to make up for the time I had missed while working.

My mother sat on the other side, casually buttering her toast.

There was a strange smile on her lips, and I could tell she had something to say.

I waited for her to speak up.

"What did Lara want?" my mother asked, mentioning Lara.

"She came to see Colin and Amy," I replied, trying not to show my mother that I was jealous of Lara or bothered by her presence.

"And kids, why did you say all those things in front of them?" I asked my children, who pouted and focused on their food instead.

I knew why, they didn’t want to take accountability.

"That’s not very nice. She’s your father’s girlfriend. They’ll marry soon. You’re not supposed to say things that make them think your mommy is trying to steal her boyfriend," I said, trying to be as mindful as I could.

I didn’t want my kids caught in the middle of the drama or to do something that would shape their views wrongly, making them think it was okay to take something, or someone, from another.

"But Daddy is not hers," Amy replied.

My mother chuckled quietly. I side-eyed her before turning back to my children.

"Daddy is her boyfriend. They’ll get engaged, then they’ll get married. And Mommy would love it if her kids didn’t embarrass her," I mumbled, watching them pout and lower their heads.

At least one of them looked guilty.

My mother, however, appeared unbothered.

"And I’ll expect others not to involve my children in such games," I said, using it as a warning for my mother to keep them out of her toxic habits.

"Iris, you can try all you want, but don’t forget, these are an Alpha King’s children," my mother responded coolly. "They’re intelligent. They know what they’re doing. And unlike you, they’re ready to fight for what they think is theirs."

I only rolled my eyes at her.

I guessed she wanted my children to turn out just like her.

Isn’t that what she did?

She ruined her relationship with me because she wanted something, at my expense.

"Anyway, when are you going to talk with Kash about the water?" she asked.

Her mention of the water sent goosebumps across my skin.

"Okay, kids, you’re done with breakfast, right? Now go and play with Scarlett, and don’t bother her," I said, patting Colin’s back after noticing they were finished eating.

I still couldn’t understand why my mother refused to follow one simple rule: don’t discuss serious matters in front of the kids.

The next thing you know, they’ll be telling Kash we were talking about the Blue River.

Once the kids jumped down and left, I straightened my posture and faced my mother.

"I thought you were going to tell me when to speak with Kash about the water," I reminded her. "None of it is in my hands. You took charge, so now you need to handle it."

"Well, then I guess today is the day. Speak with him. Bring up the water carefully," my mother uttered, making me take a deep breath before exhaling.

"And what exactly am I supposed to say? There are a lot of conversations that can start with the Blue River," I mentioned, folding my arms on the table and watching her closely.

She finally put down the toast she’d been buttering for the past five minutes and folded her arms on the table, just like me.

"Just ask him, ’Is it true that the Blue River holds the power to heal any child?’" my mother spoke softly and slowly, making sure every word was clear and loud enough for me to understand and remember.

"I see," I uttered, nodding and letting out a small laugh at how clever she was.

Of course, she was using specific words, especially the mention of a child in front of Kash—to make him anxious about what I might be referring to.

"Fine, I’ll do it," I replied, because honestly, that was the reason I was here, to free my son from the curse my mother had tied him to.

After finishing my breakfast, I changed into black fitted pants, a white shirt, and a black coat for the office.

I curled my hair and applied only red lipstick, skipping any other makeup.

I walked out of the guest house with the files in my hand and my purse hanging from my shoulder when I noticed something.

Lord Ronald was gripping his daughter’s arm, dragging her out of the main mansion.

Their warriors were already prepared to leave.

It seemed there was some trouble, because none of them looked pleased.

Was it because of what my children had said?

But it looked like Lara wanted to stay. She was trying hard to resist leaving.

"Ronald, I think that was a bit of a hasty decision," Lady Vivian called out as she rushed outside.

But the moment her eyes landed on me, I saw the same animosity in her face that I had seen many years ago.

But it seemed Lord Ronald either didn’t care that I was standing there or hadn’t noticed me, because he kept talking to Lady Vivian.

"I’m not going to give my daughter’s hand to someone just because he’s interested in something I own," he said.

That was all he said, and I realized they were ending the engagement.
