Zoe:

"Your daughter-in-law happened. She sent Kash out to take the children back to the room because Zoe is someone who cannot conceive children. Remember how nobody wants her around their children? Well, it seems like Iris is already putting ideas into your son’s head," Lara explained.

Of course, that was what it was. Since Iris never liked me and I never liked her, she had put more pressure on taking the kids away from me, using the excuse that I should not be around the children. That was nonsense.

"How could she do this to my daughter? All my daughter was doing was showing love to the children who belong to us as well," my mother snapped, grabbing my arm and pulling me into an embrace.

I hugged her back and started to cry against her chest.

"Well, you cannot do anything. Iris is back, and this time it seems like she is back with more privilege, even when she was the one who ran away again and put the children’s lives in danger by taking them to the East. But who will listen to me? No one. Just Lara, who speaks nonsense, right?" Lara complained, folding her arms across her chest and shaking her head.

"Did you know he spent the night with her in the room?" she asked, pointing toward the outside of the kitchen.

"It’s okay. We will deal with Iris. And you, Zoe, no one can stop you from spending time with them," my mother said, breaking the hug and lifting my face to clean my cheeks.

"Well, good luck with that," Lara remarked.

As soon as Lara said that, my mother snapped her head toward her, raising an eyebrow.

"I mean, I’m just saying because Kash just told your daughter that they are putting the children into school. All that because they want to use everything in their power to take them away and keep them away from Zoe and you. And you two are still not understanding. Look at you, cooking all this breakfast. You know the children cannot eat that much. You were unintentionally trying to please Iris," Lara continued.

The way Lara spoke made it feel like she was calling us out for not taking a firm stand against Iris’s arrival, and even I felt guilty.

"Of course not. Why would I cook for her?" My mother quickly defended herself.

"Well, good luck with everything. As for me, I have informed my father about what Kash has done to me. He will be on his way. I’m not like you two, who melt over Iris’s children. I will get answers from Kash for treating me this way," Lara finished, stomping her foot and rushing out of the kitchen.

My mother and I stared at each other before I broke down again.

"Don’t worry. I’ll make sure this Iris is out of Kash’s life. Then you will be the only one taking care of the children," my mother assured me, gently rubbing my back.

In that moment, I realized I would do anything, absolutely anything, to drive Iris out of our mansion and make Kash kick her out. And then I would show her how to raise children, children who would be mine alone.

"Come on now, stop crying," my mother told me. "We will take care of it, okay? Iris can never be back in my son’s life. I’m pretty sure he brought her just to punish her for running away."

My mother patted my back, but I did not know if I could trust it. I had seen the way he had brought her in and demanded that everyone accept her as part of the family. Still, I was willing to trust my mother’s words.

"And when is Markus coming over?" she questioned. "Don’t you think he is spending too much time with his family? Why does he even go there? If they don’t respect you, he should not be going there."

My mother complained about Markus. It was true. Even when his family had hinted that I should come with him, whenever I did, they made the atmosphere so hostile that I ended up deciding never to go back. It seemed like my dear husband did not care. He still went alone, had fun, and spent time with them.

"He called me earlier," I told my mother, rubbing my temples.

"Oh, what did he say to you?" my mother asked, watching my face closely.

"He wants some money," I replied. "His family is going through some crisis."

I had only said that much when my mother began to shake her head.

"That is ridiculous," she remarked. "It is one thing to help them here and there, but now they are asking for help every single day. Zoe, this is not okay. Are you even certain he is getting the money for them? I hope he is not spending it on something else, on other activities."

As soon as my mother said that, my body started to feel warm.

"So you’re not going to give it, right?" I asked. "You’re not going to help him?"

She frowned at me. "Of course I will help him. I’m just asking you."

"Okay," she added after a moment. "You know what? Let’s not fight about it. I’ll ask Kash to send them the money."

My mother must have noticed that I was not in the mood to hear another person tell me that my life was a mess and that I needed to change something about my husband. She softened her tone.

"Now go," she instructed. "Wait for breakfast to be served. I’ll talk about the children with Kash."

As soon as my mother brought up the children again, I quickly wiped my face clean. I did not want them to see me crying. They had been telling me that I was like a fun aunt, and I was really excited to take on that role.

When I stepped back outside, I noticed Lara sitting in the living room, almost as if she were waiting for Kash to come out.

"I’m going to confront him," she announced.

"Are you going to confront him?" she asked me.

I studied her face for a second, then shook my head. "No, I don’t want to upset the kids."

The moment I said that, she grunted loudly.

"Listen, this is your personal matter. I’m not going to intervene," I told her. "Besides, I can’t hurt my brother by arguing with him. You two should deal with it together."

I spoke a little annoyed because she kept forcing me to make a decision to confront my brother over something that was her personal relationship with him.

"Let me ask you something," she pressed, folding her arms across her chest. "What do you feel about a man bringing in another woman, another mate, right after his mating ceremony?"

I knew where she was headed. She was upset that none of us had made a big fuss about him bringing Iris back home.

"I mean, in this case, she was the first one," I replied calmly. "So I don’t know what you’re talking about."

I stayed calm only because she was trying to manipulate me against my brother, and I would never do that.

"Fine," she snapped. "Zoe, did you ever wonder how long it will take before your husband realizes that he wants children?"

As soon as she said that, I turned to her, glaring at her for daring to bring it up.

"That is my personal matter, and we will take care of it," I said firmly. "You don’t need to worry. Besides, if you want to fight a war, do it yourself. In the last few days, you’ve been reminding me how useless I am, so I don’t understand why you suddenly want me to take your side. At the end of the day, I’m just a useless person."

I taunted her, watching her clench her jaw.

She gave a small nod but instantly looked away when my mother stepped out of the kitchen.

"All the food is prepared. It will be served shortly," my mother announced. "And Zoe, come to my room. Let me know how much money Markus needs. I’ll arrange it. If it isn’t enough, I’ll ask Kash for it."

My mother spoke casually. There was no plan behind it. Of course, Lara found a problem with it.

"Wait a minute, money for what?" she demanded, staring between me and my mother, waiting for one of us to explain.

"Not that it’s any of your business," I replied sharply, "but sometimes you have to help your in-laws."

I snapped at her for always being cocky and rude toward us. She needed to understand that I also had in-laws, and I was trying my best to win their trust.

"You want to be nice to your in-laws? Then do it with your own money. Why does my husband have to pay for it?"

She finally said the words I had been afraid of. I had always thought they would come sooner or later. However, I thought Iris would be the one to say those things, but she had never complained.

And here was Lara, just two weeks in, not even having gone on a honeymoon, already bothered that I wanted my brother’s help.
