"I thought you were going to stick around for a few hours," Lara called as she rushed after me when she noticed I had packed my bags and came out with them.

"There’s an emergency in the pack," I replied, avoiding her as she kept trying to step in my way.

"Wait, what happened?" she asked.

"Is everything okay?" she continued.

"Do you need my help? I have seen my father take care of many matters," she added.

She stopped talking when I did not slow down for her.

"Alpha King Kash, you’re leaving already?" her father called as he finally stepped in front of me, stopping me midstep, with Lara behind me.

"Yeah, there has been an emergency in the pack," I answered, repeating what I had told his daughter.

"I hope everything is fine," Lord Ronald muttered, his eyes shifting to his daughter behind me.

I could tell they were communicating with their eyes. Maybe she was asking him to respond to me or something.

"Yeah, everything will be fine once I get there," I replied.

"Okay then. I hope you have a great journey," her father said as he stepped out of the way, and I hurried downstairs with Lara still behind me.

"I will wait for you to send warriors to pick me up," Lara announced as I stormed toward the car.

Ever since Walkin called and told me what was happening back home, I could not stay at the pack.

I packed my things and threw them into the car. Lara lingered nearby, and her father stood with her. I did not say a word to either of them.

As I was about to leave, I turned to Lord Ronald out of respect for his position as a former Alpha King.

"I’ll take my leave now," I said, speaking out of duty.

He gave a short nod, then looked at his daughter, probably expecting an intimate goodbye between us. I did nothing.

While she stood there watching me, I got into the car and started the engine. My warriors followed as we pulled away.

As soon as I hit the road, Lara started flooding my phone with messages. A notification popped up about how hurt she was that I had not said goodbye.

Lara: I was kind of expecting you to give me a goodbye kiss. I mean, we are nearly crowned Luna Queen and Alpha King, but it’s okay. That is just me being very understanding, and I understand that you are worried. You have so many other responsibilities to take care of.

The next message popped up.

Lara: And I know that the emergency is about Iris. I know you’re trying to get rid of her for me so we can start our life anew. I’m really happy. Thank you so much. Please do the job well, and if she is not leaving or tries to threaten you or something, then let me know. I know how to deal with her. But for now, I’m leaving that matter for you to handle because I know you will do a better job than I will.

I did not understand how she could think that. Why would she believe her husband would be so quick to leave his first mate without even staying to say goodbye?

It was as if she only believed what she wanted. I let her think that for now. I had to get home. I did not have time for drama.

The trip took nearly a full day and several flights. By the time I reached the mansion, my heart was pounding in my temples.

The moment I stepped inside, I learned that my children were sleeping with Zoe, and Markus was staying in the guest room.

I heard it from one maid speaking to another, telling her to have breakfast for Markus and take it to the guest room because he was upset about being sent out of the bedroom.

A few steps inside, I found Walkin in the hallway, pacing from one end to the other. I had heard Iris had transitioned and attacked him, and he had not even shifted in response. Even hours later, when he could have healed faster, he stayed to make sure no one disturbed her.

When he saw me, he came straight over. He had changed his clothes, but I could tell he had bandaged himself.

"Are you okay?" I asked, resting my hand on his shoulder and lightly touching his stomach over his shirt.

"I’ll be fine. Don’t worry. You need to check on her. I’ll go shift quickly," he replied, giving me a short nod.

He had already told me everything over the past day on the phone. I also knew she had been given a heavy dose of iron.

It was late. The maids had finished their work after discussing the breakfast menu, and the mansion was quiet.

I opened the bedroom door and stepped inside. Iris was asleep on the bed, her hands secured with iron chains. The sight hit me hard. A glass of juice sat on the bedside table. She had not woken up, or if she had, she refused to drink it. I knew how stubborn she could be.

I locked the door behind me, walked to the bed, and sat down. I placed my hand over hers. Her skin was warm.

I did not know what was worse, missing my wife’s first transition or learning it had been so frightening that it scared our children.

But it was temporary. I had heard they were asking about her nonstop and wanted to stay by her side.

Walkin told me they had not said a word to anyone about what happened. They kept it quiet. Iris had raised them well. She had done a good job.

"Iris," I whispered, gently trying to wake her.

She let out a soft groan and turned her face away, still asleep. I stayed there, watching her.

Then I pulled out the pendant, wondering if this was the right time. She was asleep. She had no idea she was sick and that I was about to give her medicine. She probably only knew she had her first transition and would not see it as an illness.

I considered slipping the pearl into her juice. But I hesitated. What if she woke up frightened and ready to shift again, and refused to drink? I could not force her. She would have to take it on her own.

While I was still thinking, she fluttered her eyelashes and slowly woke up. She groaned as her eyes opened, frowned when she saw me, and tried to sit up.

"Wait, don’t. You’ll hurt yourself," I whispered, placing a hand on her shoulder to ease her back down.

Her gaze shifted to the side, and she noticed the iron restraints. Her eyes widened, and she started to pull against them.

"What the fuck is that? Why do you have me in these?" she demanded as soon as she found her voice.

I glanced toward the door to make sure it was locked. Thankfully, it was. I had almost forgotten. Then I looked back at her.

"You had your first transition. You tried to shift inside the mansion," I said, keeping my arms around her to steady her. I watched her expression change before she slowly calmed.

"Wait, what? Oh my God, I remember. I was transitioning."

She remembered quickly, but panic hit her just as fast. She looked scared and worried, so I tried to calm her again.

"Don’t worry. Nothing bad happened. And the kids are fine," I told her. I knew that was what she was thinking about.

"They’re okay?" she asked, searching my face.

"Yes. They’re fine. They’re with Zoe."

Worry flickered across her face again. I squeezed her shoulder gently and gave her a small nod.

"They’re safe. No one hurt them," I added.

She finally relaxed, but confusion replaced the fear.

"Wait... how are you not freaking out?" she asked softly.

I looked at her in silence for a moment, then answered.

"Because I knew you were a lycan."

I saw panic flash across her face before it faded. She must have realized I did not hate her for what she was.

"Wait, what are you saying? How did you know?" she asked in a gentle voice. Her tears began to gather in her eyes, wetting her eyelashes.

I grabbed a napkin and cleaned her tears, gently rubbing her cheek. And thankfully, she didn’t turn her face away from me.

"Remember I had that conversation with your father that you wanted to know about so badly?" I asked, and she narrowed her eyes on me.

"You made my father tell you? How did you do that?" she questioned, but I shook my head, letting her know that was not how I found out.

"No, that’s not exactly how I knew, but the conversation was about lycans, and I told him that I knew," I explained before pausing because I had to tell her exactly how I found out.

"Your brother. Your secret was what he whispered into my ear when I was saving you from him and your people," I continued.

As I finished, I watched her eyes widen so much that I was afraid they would fall out of their sockets.
