That session with Iris took me back to the time when we were together, but I did not think the fire in our bodies had ever been as intense as it was tonight.

So when I heard the click of the door and she gasped and pulled away from me, I was still lost in the sight of her.

I kept one hand on my waist while with the other I brushed my hair.

Scarlett stood in the doorway of the kids’ room. Her mouth parted in shock.

Her hand gripped the door frame as if she had stepped into a scene she had never expected to witness.

"Oh my goodness, I am so sorry, I thought someone was outside the door. I heard a sound. I will go back inside," she stuttered, instantly covering her eyes with her hands.

It was not playful. It was as if she wanted to uncover her eyes the next moment, wanting the entire scene to disappear.

I noticed that Iris did not respond to her. I could not even confirm if Iris was fully awake in that moment.

Scarlett hurried back inside the room, leaving us once again outside.

We had a short conversation, just a few words, one being that Iris tried to remind me I was getting married in twelve days.

However, I could not say a word. My attention drifted to her lips again, and then to her neck, where I had kissed her moments earlier.

Her zipper was still open in the back. The sight was so tempting that I wanted to continue, but I could tell Iris was not having it.

Her cheeks were flushed red. She looked embarrassed and awkward.

Every thought in my mind revolved around how it felt to hold her again.

She must have noticed my eyes because she asked me to quit staring, and even though I told her I was not, I did not look away.

She bade me goodnight and then turned quickly and disappeared into the kids’ room.

The door closed before I could take another step toward her, and then I heard steps running away.

I turned around to look toward the hall, but none of the doors were open. So who had walked out?

Had a warrior or someone else wandered here by accident? I did not care. I was not ashamed.

The moments I had spent with Iris were the best so far. I was satisfied as I started to stroll away.

"We cannot stay away from her, not anymore," I told my wolf.

"We need to make sure the water works," I whispered under my breath. "If it does, I will change everything."

"What will you do then, Kash? She has Luca in her life, and I do not think she plans to get back with us," my wolf told me.

I grunted at his claims.

"That is all nonsense," I replied to him, rubbing the side of my jaw. "I saw how they behaved. I am not a fool. If they truly were that close, she would have stayed in his room even if he was drunk, okay?" I said to him, correcting him for his nonsense.

"What do you mean?" my wolf pressed.

"It means something is wrong," I answered, walking down the hallway and slipping my hands into my pockets. "I have been saying this for a while. She is not herself. It feels like something is gripping her, pulling her back every time she tries to breathe freely. There seem to be invisible shackles around her. I can feel them, but I cannot see them."

I uttered the words and my wolf hummed in agreement, although his agreement was lower than mine.

"Then how do we figure it out?" my wolf asked.

I shrugged, but I knew in my mind that I was going to do it. I was going to find out what was happening in her life.

The halls were dimly lit at this hour of the night.

My thoughts raced about Iris as I walked upstairs to the second floor where my room was supposed to be.

I was definitely not going to share a room with Lara.

The first room belonged to Lord Ronald, and the next was his office.

As I walked past it, I heard voices behind me, and I slowed my steps and turned slightly, my shoulder resting against the wall beside the door frame.

There they were, Lara and her father speaking. I rubbed the base of my lower lip with my thumb while zoning out.

My other hand pushed deeper into my pocket as I leaned closer to hear them.

"Who told you that?" Lara’s father asked her.

"I just know, okay? Kash’s son is sick."

The minute she said that, my fist clenched beside my lip and I pulled my thumb away.

"And I want to know who told you that, because whoever did could be lying to you," her father pressed.

"A very trusted source. Trust me on that, Father," she said, making me frown.

Who could it be? Was someone giving her information about what was happening inside Iris’ home?

"Okay, and how does it concern you?" her father asked.

"Daddy, they want the blue river water from the heart of the river to cure Colin."

She almost snapped at him, as if wondering how he was not understanding where she was going with it.

"They can wish."

The loud grunt from Ronald told me he was strictly against the idea.

I already knew he would never agree to it, but I wondered what Lara was going to suggest.

And I was shocked when her voice came from the other side.

"Why not?"

"I can’t believe you’re asking me that question. Don’t you know why I wouldn’t want that? Why would you want your father to give them the water and save Kash’s son from his first marriage?"

Her father’s words made me clench my fists angrily.

I gulped hard, waiting for what she had to say next.

"No, I just want you to let Kash go there, take the water, cure his son so that he can finally think about marriage. I think that is what is stopping him. I know that. I heard it from someone very trustworthy," she almost screamed at her father.

I wondered who it was that wanted the cure so badly, someone who wanted this to happen so that I could move on from worrying about my children and Iris.
