The room was dimly lit. The sheets were tangled beneath me as the woman from the bar went up and down my cock, trying to pull me into the moment.

I could barely focus on her.

Her hands were all over me, her breathing loud, and she kept making sounds she thought would excite me, but none of it held my attention.

My mind kept drifting back to Iris no matter how much I tried to force it away.

The girl leaned down, brushing her lips against my neck as if she expected a reaction, but all I felt was irritation.

My body refused to cooperate, and the frustration only made it worse.

I exhaled sharply, pushed her aside, and sat up, pulling the sheet across my torso.

"What are you doing?" she asked in confusion as she adjusted herself.

I stood from the bed and grabbed my jeans.

I pulled a stack of bills from my pocket and tossed the money onto the mattress without even looking at her.

As I fastened my jeans, I noticed her slipping into her dress quickly, her expression upset.

"Shut up and leave," I snapped, not wanting to hear her anymore.

"I gave you my whole night," she complained.

I finally turned to her.

"And I paid you double for it. Now go do whatever you want. You have the whole night for yourself, and you already made more than you usually would."

She seemed to understand then, scooped up the money, and left the room in silence.

When the door shut, I pressed both hands to my face.

Something was wrong with me.

Why the hell was I thinking about Iris?

"It is because you are affected and bothered by what Kash told you today." My wolf’s voice woke inside my head, blunt as always.

Kash had said Iris came to his room, touched him, kissed him, then stayed close to him just to steal a box.

The memory of his words made my jaw clench.

"And why exactly is it bothering you so much?" my wolf complained.

"I don’t know, okay?" I muttered. "I just know that..."

I trailed off when my phone rang. I glanced at the screen.

Lady Clarissa is calling...

I groaned and answered, keeping my tone flat.

"What do you want?"

There was a brief pause before she responded.

"I am heading over to give my son the medicine," she replied, sounding confident.

I nodded as I looked for my shirt.

"Where is Iris?" I asked.

My voice lacked the usual playfulness, and I did not know why I cared where she was.

"With Kash," she answered. "The children are meeting their grandmother and aunt today."

My chest tightened. So Iris was with him again.

Every time she looked at him, I saw the emotion in her eyes. It irritated me now.

It had never mattered before. I was here for money. But now jealousy woke inside me like something new.

"Luca, what is going on with you?" Lady Clarissa asked, finally noticing.

"Did you tell Iris to go and make out with Kash last night?" I asked, swallowing hard.

"So what if I did?" She paused, and I knew she understood my irritation. "You need to remember that you are just a hired boyfriend."

My teeth pressed together in an angry clench.

"Come tonight," she continued. "We will find out what to do next after the cure works."

Before she could say anything else, I hung up.

The anger did not leave. Confusion stayed within me.

I had never cared what Iris did with anyone. I was not supposed to.

Yet I felt jealous, and I hated it.

I grabbed my shirt, slipped it on, and lay down on the bed again.

I spent the rest of the day lying down, ordering food to my room and playing games on my phone, doing everything I could to distract myself from Iris and the thoughts that kept returning to me.

I even tried considering the idea of bringing in another woman, but the thought of being with someone else made me feel ridiculous.

When it was finally time to go back home, I dreaded facing Iris again, knowing these feelings would only get worse.

I left the hotel and walked toward the bus stop. It was late, and the street was quiet except for a few mates walking together.

Some held hands, and some leaned on each other. Watching them made something heavy settle inside me.

I had spent years pretending not to need anyone, but tonight the loneliness felt real.

I used to surround myself with women all the time, but as I watched these mates, all I could imagine was Iris walking beside me, her arm wrapped around mine, leaning toward my shoulder, laughing at something I said.

I wanted that feeling with her.

The bus ride was silent. I stared out the window the whole way, trying to understand myself and failing every time.

When I reached the guest house and stepped inside, the first thing I heard was Lady Clarissa’s voice.

"I said the cure did not work."

I groaned, freezing in the doorway as the weight of the day landed on me at once.

"I do not understand. Why didn’t it work?" Iris asked.

There was hesitation in her voice. Hearing her sound so worried hurt something in me.

Her mother did not answer her.

I stepped farther inside and saw Iris standing with her back to me, while her mother stared at the TV with an empty expression.

"Maybe there are more dosages needed," Iris said.

Her mother rolled her eyes and slammed the remote controller down, knocking it out of her own hand as she turned to give Iris her full attention.

"I told you it did not work. I told you this cure is for people who are bleeding on the outside, people with visible injuries. It cannot heal a long-term sickness."

As Lady Clarissa spoke, Iris’s body shook, as if she had lost her balance.

I rushed forward and caught her before she could fall.

Her mother did not look panicked at all. The news had hit Iris hard, and she passed out in my arms.
