But even as comfort settled between them, Caelia pulled back slightly. Her hands were still clutching his arms. Eyes wide with fresh horror.

"By the Light!"

She gasped. Breath hitching.

"Serenya. My baby girl—what’s going to happen to her?"

Tears spilled anew. Not the controlled ones from before. These raw. Unfiltered. Her body shook harder.

Darian’s grip tightened. Steady.

"Caelia—"

"No." She shook her head wildly. Silver-violet strands whipping. "She’s... she’s been ours. Seventeen years. I raised her. Loved her. Every bedtime story. Every scraped knee I healed. Every milestone."

Her voice cracked. Fingers digging into his sleeves.

"This will destroy her. Finding out she’s not... not really—"

She couldn’t finish. Sobs swallowed the words.

Darian pulled her close again. One hand cradling her head. The other was rubbing slow circles on her back. Military calm masking the ache in his own chest.

"Listen to me."

Soft. Firm.

"We’ll adopt her. Officially. Legally. She’s our daughter in every way that matters."

Caelia jerked back. Eyes searching his. Desperation raw.

"But the Brenners. They’ll want her back. And the clans—the scandal—"

"Let them try."

His tone hardened. Protective edge sharpening.

"Serenya stays with us. She’s Long. She’s Lin. Blood or not."

Fresh tears. But these are mixed with something like relief.

"You’d do that? For her?"

"For us." He cupped her face. Thumbs brushing tears. "She’s not losing a family. She’s gaining a sister. Mara will need us, too. Both girls. We’ll guide them. Together."

Caelia nodded slowly. Still trembling. But leaning into his touch.

"You’re right. By the Light, you’re right. Serenya... she’ll be devastated at first. But we’ll help her. Show her she’s still loved. Still home."

Her voice steadied. Maternal instinct kicking in.

"I’ll talk to her. Explain gently. Make sure she knows nothing changes how I feel."

Darian’s doubt flickered. Then died.

This. This was the woman he’d married. The mother who’d bandaged wounds and whispered lullabies. Who put children above everything.

He pressed a kiss to her forehead.

"We’ll tell the boys too. Prepare them. Family meeting before the SIS arrives."

Caelia managed a watery smile.

"Our sons. They’ll protect their sisters. Both of them."

She straightened slightly. Wiping her face with the edge of her sleeve. Composure returning in layers.

"Mara... poor child. What she’s endured."

Her voice broke again. Genuine grief.

"We’ll bring her home. Heal her. Give her everything Serenya had."

Darian nodded. Resolve settling.

"And Serenya keeps her place. Her inheritance. Her future."

Caelia leaned into him once more. Exhaustion evident.

"Thank you. For seeing the girls. Both of them."

He held her tighter.

"Always."

They stood like that. Minutes stretching. The study was quiet except for her slowing breaths.

She pulled back slightly, still nestled in his embrace, looking up at him with confusion that appeared genuine. "My work? Darian, I’m not an alchemist. I’m a healer. Different disciplines entirely."

"I know," he said, one hand still stroking her hair in that comforting rhythm. "But the Guild apparently tested archived practice samples from your childhood training. Potions submitted under your name during your education under Master Chen Guang."

"Those were training exercises from forty years ago." Something defensive crept into her tone, but she remained pressed against him, face partially hidden against his chest. "Why would the Guild suddenly care about childhood homework?"

"They ran spiritual signature analysis," Darian continued, feeling the shift in her body—tension returning to shoulders that had just begun to relax. "Verification of who actually created each potion. Thirty-seven samples tested."

Caelia’s face was still mostly hidden against his chest, where he couldn’t see her full expression. But he felt the quality of her stillness change, become something more composed.

"Every single one carried Selene’s spiritual essence," he said quietly. "Not yours. All the competition wins, all the accolades attributed to you during those four years of training—the Guild says it was all Selene’s work."

Caelia pulled back slightly, still in his embrace, looking up at him with confusion that appeared genuine. "And?"

For just a moment, she went very still. Then she shook her head, pulling back enough to meet his eyes directly. "Both Selene and I submitted our homework to the same teachers," she said, hands spreading in a gesture of bewildered innocence. "They had our work side by side, evaluated us together. If the signatures were truly all Selene’s, wouldn’t they have noticed? Wouldn’t Master Chen Guang have said something?"

She stepped away from his embrace, pacing now, energy crackling in movements that could have been distress. "In the beginning, I thought Selene had talent. Real gift for alchemy despite her weaker cultivation base. But the elders and teachers kept saying how useless she was, how she lacked even basic comprehension of potion-making principles. They discouraged her constantly, pushed her toward other disciplines."

Caelia turned to face him, eyes wide with what looked like realization. "Why would they hide her talent if she was truly as gifted as the Guild now claims? Why would Master Chen Guang and all our tutors systematically suppress a generational prodigy while praising mediocre work? Unless..."

She let the implication hang, and Darian found himself following the thread despite earlier suspicions. Unless the Lin family had known about Selene’s gift and deliberately buried it. Unless the tutors had been instructed to favor Caelia over her twin. Unless there was a larger conspiracy within the Lin clan itself.

It made sense. The Lin family had always been ruthlessly political. Might have seen an advantage in elevating Caelia while suppressing Selene. Branch families were often treated as resources rather than equals, and talented children were shuffled and molded to serve the main family interests.

"The Guild will investigate," Darian said, his voice gentler now. "They’ll look into whether the tutors were complicit or if there’s more to this than we understand."

"Of course they’ll investigate," Caelia agreed, moving back to him, her hand finding his. "And they’ll find that the Lin family has questions to answer. That the teachers who supposedly evaluated our work had their own agendas."

She looked up at him with eyes that held nothing but wounded sincerity. "I’ve spent forty years believing what they told me—that I was the talented twin, that Selene was the failure. What if everything I thought I knew about my own abilities is just another layer of Lin family manipulation?"

The vulnerability in her voice, the genuine confusion—it convinced him more than any elaborate explanation could have. She truly believed what she was saying. Truly thought the Lin family had orchestrated everything, that she’d been as much a victim as Selene in their political games.

Darian pulled her back into his embrace, and this time when his arms came around her, it carried commitment rather than comfort. "The Emperor offered us a deal," he said quietly against her hair. "Imperial protection for you in exchange for the Long clan accepting a closer alliance with the throne."

He felt her tense immediately. "Don’t," she said, voice sharp with sudden vehemence. "Darian, you can’t give up the clan’s freedom for me. Everything your father built, everything the Long family has defended for generations—you can’t compromise that. Not for anyone."

Her hands gripped his arms with desperate strength. "Let the investigation proceed. Let them question me under cosmic law. If I’m innocent, the truth will vindicate me. But you cannot sacrifice Long clan autonomy for imperial protection I don’t need."

The conviction in her voice, the immediate rejection of the Emperor’s deal—that sealed it for him. Someone guilty wouldn’t refuse protection. Wouldn’t insist on facing investigation that could destroy them. This was the Caelia he knew, putting clan interests above personal survival, demonstrating exactly the kind of nobility he’d always believed characterized his wife.

"The SIS will be here this afternoon," he said, making his decision in that moment. Making his choice to stand with her against whatever accusations came. "They’ll take you into custody for formal questioning. But I’ll be there. And after they clear you, after the truth comes out, we’ll deal with finding our daughter together."

Caelia pulled back to look at him, tears streaming down her face. "You believe me."

"I believe you," Darian confirmed, the words carrying weight of commitment that transcended simple trust. "Thirty years of marriage, Caelia. I know who you are. I know what you’re capable of. And I know you wouldn’t deliberately harm our child."

She kissed him then, desperately, gratefully, and when they finally broke apart she was still crying. "Thank you," she whispered. "Thank you for trusting me when everyone else will doubt."

"Until the SIS arrives," he said gently, "you should rest. Prepare yourself for the interrogation. It won’t be pleasant, even for someone with nothing to hide."

Caelia nodded, wiping at her tears with trembling hands. "You’re right. I should... I should compose myself. Make sure I can answer clearly without emotion getting in the way."

She moved toward the door, pausing at the threshold to look back at him. "Darian... I love you. Whatever happens today, whatever they ask me, I want you to remember that. Everything I’ve done has been to protect the people I love."

"I know," he said, voice steady with certainty that had settled in his chest. "Go. Rest. I’ll handle everything else."

The door closed behind her with soft finality.

Darian moved to the window overlooking the training courtyard, watching his sons practice forms that had been passed down through generations. His hands found the jade pendant at his throat—Forged in Battle. The Long family motto his mother had chosen.

He’d made his choice. Chosen to believe in his wife, to trust in thirty years of shared life over imperial insinuations designed to secure Long family compliance. Chosen love over suspicion, faith over tactical caution.

She allowed herself one small smile, sharp and vicious as a blade, before smoothing her expression back to appropriate distress and moving toward their private quarters.
