"Your metal hums," he said, the way someone might observe that water was wet. A fact delivered without request, leaving the response to whoever chose to answer.

Bjorn chose.

He led six Northern warriors and their War-King through the western slope to the forge compound, where the furnaces burned hot enough to make even Northerners blink. The forge had grown since the founding — three primary furnaces, six secondary stations, two quenching bays, and a finishing room where Bjorn’s standard production — non-Spirit-Touched blades and tools for the sect’s daily use — filled the racks.

Hrothgar walked the forge the way he walked everything — slowly, with the evaluating patience of a man who’d spent seventy years determining which things in the world were worth his attention. He stopped at the primary furnace. Watched the heat. Nodded once. The nod of a man who understood fire, even if fire wasn’t his trade.

The warriors dispersed with the purposeful curiosity of people who’d carried weapons their entire lives and recognized quality by touch. They handled the standard weapons — testing weight, balance, the grip, and swing that told a Northern warrior everything they needed to know about a piece of steel. One warrior hefted a war hammer and grunted. Approval. The Northern version of a compliment, delivered at minimum volume for maximum sincerity. Another ran her thumb along a glaive’s edge and nodded to Bjorn across the forge. The nod said: sharp. In Northern shorthand, that was a complete review.

"These are good weapons," Hrothgar said. Not a compliment — an assessment. From the War-King, the distinction mattered. "But these are not what hums."

"No," Bjorn said. "They’re not."

"Show us what hums."

Bjorn looked toward the western slope. Toward the peak above the forge where the sound lived — the constant, low harmony that had drawn him to this site in the first place. The Singing Swords. The spirit weapons. The arsenal that had a heartbeat.

"That’s not in the forge," he said. "That’s on the mountain."

They climbed to Sword Mountain in the late morning light.

The path from the forge wound up the western slope through switchbacks that Silas had threaded with formation conduit — the spiritual energy humming underfoot, guiding the way. The Singing Swords grew louder with every step. Not the ambient hum that reached the forge compound — the full harmonic. Over sixty voices raised in the chord that hadn’t been heard on Ascara since before the Cataclysm. Swords and spears and hammers and axes and glaives and halberds, each adding its own frequency to a sound that settled in the chest and stayed there.

The Northern warriors stopped talking. One by one, as they climbed, the conversation died. Not discomfort — attention. The kind of silence that happened when people who’d lived their entire lives with steel in their hands heard steel singing for the first time.

Tormund — eight feet tall, white-braided, the patrol leader who’d said "You left" at the border and "Northern answer" about Aren — was the first to stop moving entirely. She stood on the path with her head tilted, listening. Her hand went to the axe at her hip — her own weapon, mundane steel, the tool she’d carried for twenty years. Then her hand dropped. She’d heard something in the harmony that her own axe couldn’t answer.

Raven met them at the summit.

She’d felt them coming through the formation network — the mountain’s security readings flagging the large Northern signatures as they climbed. But she’d also felt something else. A shift in the harmony. A change in the chord. Two of the spirit weapons on the mountain had altered their resonance as the Northerners climbed — subtle, inaudible to anyone who wasn’t a cultivator at Core Crystallization, but unmistakable. Two weapons leaning toward the approaching group, the way flowers lean toward light.

"War-King," she said. "Welcome to Sword Mountain."

Hrothgar looked at the peak. At the platforms, alcoves, and racks that the mountain itself had carved to hold the arsenal. At the weapons — swords in neat rows, spears standing upright in stone cradles, hammers resting on granite shelves, axes gleaming in the morning light, glaives and halberds arranged in the precise order they’d chosen when they’d flown here during the Wave. Each one alive. Each one humming. Each one waiting.

"How many?" Hrothgar asked.

"Over sixty. The original twenty swords awakened during the golden rain. The rest were forged by Bjorn with Spirit-Touched methods and woke during the Wave. They flew here. The mountain made room."

Hrothgar’s ice-blue eyes moved across the arsenal. His hand didn’t reach for anything. He was a warrior who understood that touching a weapon uninvited was a different act than being invited to touch.

"They’re waiting," he said.

"For their wielders. The weapons choose — not the other way around. A bonded spirit weapon lives in the wielder’s dantian, grows with them, and fights with them. The bond is permanent." Raven looked at the Northerners. Six warriors and a king, standing among weapons that had been waiting for compatible souls since their creation. "I felt two of them respond when you climbed the path."

The silence that followed was the kind that carried weight.

"Two of them are interested in someone here," Raven said. "I can’t tell which weapons, and I can’t tell which people. That’s between you and them. If you’d like to try the approach, you’re welcome."

The trial was simple in the way that all profound things were simple.

The spirit weapons sat behind a barrier that the mountain maintained — not a wall, not a formation. A presence. The line between the summit’s open platform and the racks where the weapons waited was felt, not seen. It hummed against the skin like static, and it said: come closer if you mean it.

Raven explained the process. Walk to the barrier. Extend your awareness — spiritual, physical, intentional. If a weapon recognized you as compatible, the barrier would part. The weapon would open a path. You walked through, and the weapon was there.

If nothing recognized you, the barrier stayed closed. No shame in it. Compatibility was rare, specific, and couldn’t be forced. Most of Seven Peaks’ disciples had tried and walked away empty-handed. Three had succeeded — Taron, Thorne, and Jace. The weapons were patient. They’d wait centuries for the right wielder rather than accept the wrong one.

Tormund went first.

She walked to the barrier with the stride of a woman who’d been walking into uncertain situations for thirty years and had never slowed down for any of them. She stopped at the line. Closed her eyes. Extended her awareness — not the refined spiritual perception of a cultivator, but something rawer. Older. The awareness of a Northern warrior who’d spent decades listening to wind and ice and the particular silence of mountains that wanted to kill you.

The barrier hummed. Shifted. And opened.

Not the whole barrier — a path. A channel through the presence, wide enough for one person, leading directly to a rack on the western edge. Tormund’s eyes opened. She saw the path. Saw where it led.

She walked through.

The weapon was an axe. Single-headed, longer haft than the Southern style, the head was weighted for the overhead swing that every Northern child learned before they learned to read. It sat on a granite shelf that the mountain had shaped specifically for its proportions — the right width, the right angle, the right depth. Waiting.

Tormund stopped in front of it. Looked at it. The axe looked back — not with eyes but with resonance. The hum that had been part of the general harmony separated into something individual, something aimed, something that said you.

She picked it up.

The steel blazed. Amber light flooding through the grain of the metal, following lines that hadn’t been visible when the axe was cold. Letters burned along the haft — not from outside but from within, as if the name had always been there and was only now becoming readable.

FROSTBITE.

The light settled. The letters cooled to silver against dark wood. The harmony on the mountain shifted — a new note threading into the chord. Lower than the swords. Harder. The voice of a weapon is made for a different kind of work than cutting.

Tormund stood on the summit holding Frostbite and breathing. The axe hummed against her palms. Her hands — thirty years of patrols, of ice and combat and the weight of weapons that had never answered back — were shaking. Not from strain. From the shock of holding something alive that had been waiting for her since the day it was forged.

"Frostbite," she said.

The axe hummed louder. Yes. That’s my name. You said it right.

The second choosing happened forty minutes later.

Grenn — the broad-shouldered warrior with the braided beard, the one who’d grunted approval at the forge — walked the barrier and found a spear waiting for him. The barrier parted to the eastern racks, where twelve spirit spears stood upright in stone cradles. One of them leaned. Not physically — energetically. Tilting its resonance toward Grenn the way Frostbite had tilted toward Tormund.

Grenn was a spearman. Had been since he was old enough to hold a shaft. The Northern Clans used spears for hunting, for wall defense, for the formation fighting that worked when your enemy was shorter than you, and you could strike from above.

He lifted the spear from its cradle. Light ran along the shaft — white fire that etched letters into the dark wood.

GROUNDSHAKER.

One of the twelve that had awakened during the Wave. Named in the golden light of the first magic returning to the world. And now, a year and a half later, finding the warrior whose hands it had been made for.

Grenn looked at the letters. At the spear. At his hands, holding a weapon that was alive.

"Huh," he said.

Northern response. Complete. Sufficient.

The mountain sang. Two new voices in the chord — an axe and a spear, both carrying the frequency of Northern steel wielded by Northern hands. The harmony deepened. The other weapons watched — sixty-odd voices humming their approval, the patient chorus welcoming new siblings.

The remaining four warriors tried the barrier. It didn’t open. They walked back without comment, because Northerners understood that rejection wasn’t failure — it was honesty, and they respected honesty more than they respected success.

Hrothgar didn’t try.

He stood on the summit and watched two of his warriors bond with spirit weapons and four walk away, and he didn’t approach the barrier. Raven didn’t ask why. Some people knew what they were and didn’t need a weapon to confirm it.

But he looked at the arsenal for a long time. At the axes and hammers and spears that waited on their racks, alive and patient and willing. At the mountain that had carved itself to hold them. At the forge below, where an exiled smith had shaped every weapon with Northern hands and Southern fire and the stubbornness of someone who’d been told he didn’t belong and had decided that belonging wasn’t the point.

"We will send smiths," Hrothgar said. "To learn."

Five words. From the War-King, five words was an essay. Five words that meant: the alliance was not just about shelter and ley-line restoration and a hall with tall ceilings. The alliance was about what the North could become when it stopped being alone.

"The forge is open," Bjorn said. "Same as the door."

Hrothgar looked at him. Down at him — nine feet to seven. But the angle didn’t determine the conversation. It never had.

"Tormund stays," Hrothgar said.

Not a request. The War-King deciding that a bonded warrior remained where the chorus sang. Tormund didn’t argue. She held Frostbite against her shoulder — the Northern carry, upright, blade turned outward — and nodded once.

"Grenn stays too," Grenn said. Speaking for himself. Holding Groundshaker the way he’d held spears his entire life, except this one hummed against his palm and knew his name.

Hrothgar looked at his spearman. The spearman looked back.

"Aye," Hrothgar said.

Sigrid found Bjorn at the hearthstone that evening.

The hall was quiet — warriors in their rooms, Hrothgar in the gathering space with his dissolve-formation-crystals drink, Tormund and Grenn in their sleeping chambers with their weapons. Frostbite and Groundshaker hummed through the stone — faint, warm, the sound of spirit weapons settling into new homes.

Sigrid sat beside Bjorn on the hearthstone. The coal channels warmed the granite beneath them.

"Bjorn," she said. Simply. The way you’d address someone whose history you shared without needing to recite it.

Bjorn didn’t correct her. Some names were earned by history, not accuracy.

"Your daughter’s garden," he said. "You saw the shoot."

"I saw it. I saw the creature watching it. I saw my daughter talk to a plant as if it could hear her." Sigrid’s hands rested on her knees — rough, weathered, the mirror of her daughter’s soil-covered fingers scaled up by thirty years of use. "I didn’t understand any of it. I don’t need to. She’s alive. She’s well. She’s doing something that matters to her."

"That’s enough?"

"That’s everything." She looked at the hearthstone. At the warmth coming up through the stone. "You left the Clans with a wife and a boy and nothing else. Now you’ve built a hall for the people who let you go. Forged the weapons that just chose two of my warriors. Why?"

"Because the hall needed building. And the steel needed shaping."

"It mattered who it was for," Sigrid said. "Don’t pretend it didn’t."

Bjorn looked at his hands — scarred from decades of forge work, the knuckles enlarged, the fingertips thick with callus. Hands that had shaped steel for people who’d sent his son to the sacrifice stone and let him leave without a word of farewell. Hands that had built them a hall and forged them weapons anyway.

"Aye," he said. "It mattered."

Sigrid made the Northern sound — the breath that carried more than air. She put one hand on the hearthstone. Felt the warmth.

"It’s right," she said.

From the sleeping chambers, Frostbite and Groundshaker hummed together. A low harmony — axe and spear, the weapons of the North, singing quietly in a hall built by a man whose people had let him go and who had forgiven them in the only language he spoke. Steel and stone and fire.

They sat together on the hearthstone, listening to the mountain hold its breath around them. Two Northerners doing what Northerners did when the fire was warm, and the silence was the kind that didn’t need filling.

Outside, spring held the mountain. Inside, the weapons sang.
