The clarity faded.

But there — far, at the absolute edge of what her life-sense could resolve through the network’s attenuated channels — a resonance.

She recognized the frequency. It matched Elian’s. The particular harmonic that Pillar Souls produced, the dimensional anchoring signature that was as distinctive as a voice and as impossible to fake. A Pillar Soul. Alive. In the north. And—

Fading.

The resonance was thin. Not the robust, singing clarity of Elian’s signature — the wavering, guttering quality of a flame that had been burning too long on too little fuel. "He’s seven, and he’s Northern and his ice cultivation is stronger in cold environments, and the Clans will see him and recognize one of their own. His presence legitimizes us in a way that nothing else can."

Taron processed this. The commander evaluating a tactical asset that was also a child. "Bjorn and Freya go, Aren goes with his parents. Acceptable. But he stays behind the line in any engagement."

"Of course."

"Jace." This from Thorne, who’d been listening from his security station. "He fought in the Northern arena circuits when he was younger. Three seasons. Made contacts. The arena fighters have standing in the Clans — combat earns respect regardless of blood. And his connections are from the fighting community, not the political hierarchy. "Provisions?"

Coop answered. The logistics mind, already computing supply chains for a six-person team in winter conditions. "Six weeks of provisions, formation-compressed for weight reduction. She paused. Looked at Coop specifically.

"The Ashford Crossing situation. The three men your lattice flagged. Keep watching. Trust your instincts."

Coop’s cybernetic eyes flickered. The old soldier acknowledging an order that wasn’t an order — a confirmation that the thing he’d been carrying for weeks was real, and his commander shared his concern.

"The scanner," Thorne said. "The sensitivity modification is underway. Holt’s cutting the precision filters. Silas estimates three more weeks to completion. When it’s done, we’ll know whether Seven Peaks is clean or whether the signal masking is hiding something."

"Run it the moment it’s ready. If it finds a positive, Coop confirms with his lattice. If Coop confirms..." She left the sentence unfinished. The if-then didn’t have an established protocol because the scenario it described — a fabricated person inside Seven Peaks — didn’t have a precedent.

"We’ll handle it," Taron said. The words of a man who handled things. Who had handled a mecha and a sovereignty declaration and a continental intelligence picture and would handle this too, because handling was what he did and the doing was the point.

He was standing at the door of Raven’s office when she came out of the council meeting. Seven years old. Ice-blue eyes. Raven looked at him. The boy who was her son in everything but name — the second child, the ice to Elian’s roots, the frost on the pillow that meant safe. She wanted to say no. The mother wanted to say no. The mother who had carried him and fed him and tucked him in and read bedtime stories and watched his frost patterns on his pillow and known what each one meant — that mother wanted to wrap him in blankets and lock the door and keep him on the mountain where nothing could hurt him.

The leader said something different.

"You stay with your parents at all times. You don’t engage in combat. You don’t wander. You don’t try to prove anything to anyone. And if I say run, you run."

"You do if I tell you to. That’s the deal."

Aren considered this with the seriousness of a child negotiating terms with a person whose authority he recognized and whose judgment he trusted enough to obey even when obedience conflicted with his instincts.
