The recovery ward she’d built during the preparation weeks held twenty beds. She’d thought that was generous. She’d thought she was planning for worst-case scenarios.

"Clear the lecture hall," she told Sera, who had teleported from the Cloudrest branch at midnight without being asked. "Every cot, every blanket, every sleeping mat in storage. I need forty more beds by dawn."

"Forty?"

"Sixty-eight total. Some will share. The ones who can’t be alone will share."

Sera didn’t ask another question. She moved.

Mira worked. She had trained thirty first-responders in the two weeks before deployment — not healers, not yet, but people who could stabilize, assess, and sort. They sorted now. She had drilled the categories into them until they could recite them in their sleep: critical, serious, moderate, walking wounded. She had made them practice on dummies and on each other and on volunteers who pretended to be unconscious. Critical: twelve. Spiritual foundations near-collapse — the extraction process had torn pathways open and held them open for months, sometimes years, draining energy through wounds that never closed. These children couldn’t sit up. Couldn’t focus their eyes. Serious: twenty-eight. Significant damage, but stable. Depleted reserves, torn meridians that were beginning to scar, and immune systems suppressed by prolonged energy extraction. They could sit. Some could talk. Most didn’t.

Moderate: twenty. Depleted but recovering. The hardiest or the most recently taken — children whose time in the tubes had been measured in weeks rather than months. These ones looked at the mountains through the Medicine Hall windows and didn’t know what to do with the view.

Walking wounded: eight. Physically functional. Psychologically devastated. The twelve-year-old girl from Raven’s convoy was in this category. She sat on the edge of her assigned bed with her spine straight and her hands flat on her knees and watched every adult who entered the room with the particular vigilance of someone who had learned that the distance between safety and a tube was one wrong turn.

Lin Yue’s formulations arrived on a cart that two apprentices pushed through the ward at a pace that said urgent without saying panic. Fourteen pathway stabilization compounds — eight standard, six experimental. The experimental ones had been designed from theory, tested on models, and never administered to a living patient.

"These three for the criticals," Lin Yue said, indicating the jade-green vials. "Half-dose initially. Watch for rejection — fever, shaking, skin discoloration. If the pathways accept the compound, full dose at the next bell."

"And if they reject?"

Lin Yue’s face answered that question before her mouth did. "Then we try the fourth formula, which I finished at three this morning, and which I am less confident about."

Mira administered the first half-dose to the three-year-old boy. His pathways accepted it. The compound settled into the torn channels and began — slowly, tentatively — to reduce the bleeding of spiritual energy from wounds that had been open for longer than the child could remember. His breathing smoothed. Not healed. Stabilized.

Good enough. Next.

Elian walked into the recovery ward at mid-morning.

Nobody stopped him. Not Mira, who saw him in her peripheral vision and kept working. Not the first-responder by the door, who looked at the six-year-old boy with the golden eyes and the determined expression and made a decision that had nothing to do with protocol and everything to do with the fact that turning him away would have required a kind of authority that felt wrong to exercise.

He sat down beside a boy of about eight. The boy was in the serious category — stable, conscious, silent. He hadn’t spoken since extraction. His team leader’s notes said he’d been in the facility for approximately fourteen months. His eyes were open but fixed on the ceiling, tracking nothing, the gaze of someone who had learned that looking at things invited things to look back.

Elian didn’t speak. He pulled a chair to the bedside and sat with his hands in his lap and his feet dangling above the floor, and simply existed there. Present. Warm. Small and unthreatening in a way that adults, no matter how gentle, could never manage — because adults were the ones who had put the boy in the tube, and no amount of kindness could erase that architecture in a day.

Minutes passed. The ward hummed with quiet activity — footsteps, murmured assessments, the clink of vials.

The boy turned his head.

Elian’s eyes met his. Golden and steady. The boy looked at them for a long time. Not at Elian’s face — at his eyes specifically, as if something in them was visible that the rest of the room couldn’t provide. Whatever it was, it worked the way water works on drought-cracked earth — not by force but by presence, by simply being there until the ground remembered how to absorb.

The boy reached out. His hand moved slowly — the caution of a child who had learned that reaching for things ended in pain. His fingers touched Elian’s cheek. The skin. The warmth of it.

Elian took the boy’s hand. Held it in both of his.

The boy cried.

Not sobbing. Not wailing. A silent overflow — tears sliding from the corners of eyes that hadn’t produced them in fourteen months, running down temples and into the pillow, the body releasing something it had been holding so tightly that the muscles of his face had forgotten what relaxation felt like.

Mira watched from two beds away. Her hands paused over a bandage. Every instinct she had said intervene, assess, manage — but she didn’t. She had been a healer long enough to know that some wounds responded to medicine and some responded to presence, and that the second kind was harder to come by and impossible to prescribe.

Elian sat with the boy until the tears stopped. Then he sat with him longer. Then he moved to the next bed, and the next, carrying nothing but himself and the quality of attention that he gave each child — complete, unhurried, as if every one of them was the only person in the room.

By afternoon, three more children had cried. One had spoken — a girl of nine who asked Elian his name and then said nothing else, but whose hand unclenched for the first time since extraction.

Raven found Elian in the residential garden at dusk. He was sitting on the stone bench near the fountain with Aren beside him — Aren hadn’t left Elian’s side since the convoys arrived, a quiet sentinel with ice-blue eyes and frost forming on his sleeve cuffs when the emotions in the ward leaked through the walls.

"Mama."

Elian’s voice was tired. Not physically — the tiredness of a child who had spent a day absorbing other people’s pain and didn’t have the vocabulary to describe the weight of it.

Raven sat beside him. Aren shifted to make room but didn’t leave.

"They’re so empty," Elian said. He was looking at his hands. "Something took the light out of them. It’s like — when you take a candle and blow it out, the wick is still there, but the fire’s gone. They’re all wick and no fire."

Raven pulled him against her side. His head settled into the hollow of her shoulder — the place it had found in those first weeks after the rescue, when he’d been too small and too frightened to sleep without contact, and which he returned to whenever the world became too heavy for a six-year-old to carry alone.

"We’re going to put it back," she said.

"Can you?"

"Not by myself. It takes time. And people who care enough to sit with them the way you did today."

Elian considered this. Aren’s frost thickened on his cuffs — the boy’s ice affinity responding to the echo of what he’d sensed through Elian all day.

"I’ll go back tomorrow," Elian said. "If that’s okay."

"It’s okay."

"Aren too?"

Aren didn’t wait for the question to be directed at him. "Obviously."

The separate medical suite had been a storage room two days ago. Now it held a reinforced cot, formation-powered diagnostic displays, and the antiseptic smell of a space converted for purpose rather than designed for it.

Craine was sitting upright when Raven entered. Not lying down — sitting, legs over the side of the cot, cybernetic arms braced against the frame. The targeting optic in his left eye socket was still dark. His right arm performed its twitching cycle — open, close, open — but slower now, the recalibration approaching something resembling normal. His right knee joint hummed faintly, the mechanical components audible in the quiet room.

He looked at her. She felt the Kirin Bead respond.

Not the blaze from the relay report, and not the background hum of the convoy. Something between — a warm, steady pulse behind her sternum that strengthened the closer she stood. Recognition without comprehension. Her body telling her something her mind couldn’t translate.

She kept her face neutral. Whatever the bead was doing, Craine didn’t need to see it. He needed a conversation, not a mystery.

"You’re the one who ordered the strikes," he said. Not a question. He’d had time in the transport wagon to learn the broad shape of things from the disciples around him.

"Yes."

"All seven facilities?"

"All seven. Simultaneously."

Craine processed this. His jaw worked — the same motion Taron had noted on the stairwell, the physical habit of a man organizing his reactions before allowing them to surface. His organic eye searched her face. Taking inventory. Assessing the way a career soldier assessed a commanding officer on first contact — competence, intent, the gap between what they said and what they meant.

"I spent three months in that cell imagining rescue," he said. "I imagined an army. Thousands of soldiers. Imperial decree. Political pressure. Months of negotiation, maybe. If I was lucky."

"We’re a sect. A few hundred combat-capable disciples and a really good intelligence network."

Something crossed his face. It wasn’t a laugh — his body had forgotten how to produce one — but it occupied the space where a laugh would have been. The ghost of a reflex.

"Who are you people?"

"We’re Seven Peaks. And you’re safe here." Raven stepped back. The Kirin Bead pulsed once more — warmth, recognition, insistence — and she breathed through it. "Rest. Mira — our head healer — will assess your cybernetics properly once the children are stable. We’ll talk when you’re ready."

Craine’s eye held hers for another moment. He was looking for the catch — the price, the angle, the thing that every institution in his life had hidden behind the word safe. She let him look. He wouldn’t find it, and the absence of it would take longer to trust than any promise she could make.

"Rest," she said again. And left.

In the corridor, she pressed her back against the wall and exhaled. The Kirin Bead settled — not quiet, not gone, but reduced to a presence she could carry without it showing on her face.

She didn’t know what it wanted. She didn’t know what he was to her, or to the world, or to the bead that had stirred for the first time during a dream of a town she’d never visited. She knew only that when she stood in the same room as Craine, something in her recognized something in him — the way a compass recognized north. Not understanding. Not explanation. Direction.

She would figure it out. Later. When sixty-eight children weren’t occupying every available bed and every available thought.

Sixty-seven.

The number corrected itself in her mind before she could stop it. Sixty-seven. Raven stood before it. Thorne was at the communications desk, monitoring the last relay signals as teams completed withdrawal. Marcus was running diagnostics on the formation network, which had absorbed sixty-seven new spiritual signatures in twenty-four hours and was recalibrating its distribution patterns to account for sixty-seven damaged, depleted, fragile additions to the system it sustained.

She picked up the chalk. Drew a line under the operational summary. Wrote:

67 alive. 5 gone. 4,288 before them.

She put the chalk down. Looked at the numbers.

Five. Not four. Because one bed in the recovery ward was empty now, and the girl who should have been in it was wrapped in white cloth in the small room behind the Medicine Hall that Mira had never wanted to build and had built anyway, because a healer who didn’t prepare for death was a healer who hadn’t been paying attention.

The five-year-old from the primary facility was asleep in Raven’s quarters. She had been carried there by Naida after refusing to be placed in the recovery ward — not from defiance but from a grip that could not be loosened from Raven’s robes without waking her, and Raven had made the decision that a sleeping child should not be woken to satisfy institutional organization. Naida had raised an eyebrow. Raven had raised one back. The eyebrow contest ended in a draw, and the child slept in Raven’s bed.

"The evidence packages," Thorne said, without looking up from the relay desk. "Coop’s almost finished integrating the footage. Entity encounter, drone fight, facility recordings, scientist testimony, and shipping manifests. He wants to know about release timing."

"Forty-eight hours. Let the children stabilize. Let Mira do her work. Then we release everything at once."

"And the families? The manifests have names. Origins. They’ll be looking for their children."

Raven closed her eyes. Four thousand two hundred and eighty-eight families who would learn that their child had been taken, used, and destroyed. Sixty-seven families who would learn that their child had been taken, used, and survived. The distance between those two numbers was a gulf that no evidence package could bridge.

"After the release. We contact every family on the manifests. Every one. The living children first — reunification where possible, sanctuary here where it isn’t. Then the others. Every name. Every family."

"That’s thousands of notifications."

"Yes."

Thorne looked at her. He didn’t argue. He’d served under enough commanders to know when a decision had been made not from strategy but from the part of a person that strategy couldn’t reach.

"I’ll draft the notification framework tonight," he said.

"Thank you."

The recovery ward was quiet at two in the morning.

Healers moved on rotation — soft-soled shoes on stone floors, the rustle of blankets adjusted, the low murmur of a first-responder checking vitals by formation lantern light. Sixty-seven children slept. Some peacefully. Some not. The boy Elian had sat with was curled on his side with his hand extended off the mattress, reaching for a chair that was no longer there.

Raven walked between the beds. She didn’t heal — she had nothing left to heal with, her reserves a hollow ache behind her ribs. She just walked. Looking at faces. Memorizing them. The bed was empty. Made. Blanket smoothed flat. Pillow centered. The first-responder who had prepared it hadn’t known what else to do, so they’d made the bed as if someone might still come to fill it.

Raven stood there for a long time. She didn’t touch anything. She didn’t cry. She stood in front of an empty bed that should have held a girl of eleven and let the weight of it settle into the place where it would live — not in her reserves, not in her cultivation, but in the quiet architecture of memory where the things she couldn’t save were kept alongside the things she could.

Then she smoothed the blanket — already smooth, already flat, but her hands needed something to do — and walked away.

Behind her, the ward breathed. Sixty-seven small lives, suspended between what had been done to them and what would be done for them. Asleep. Safe. For now.

For now was enough. Tomorrow, they would begin the work of making it permanent.
